Book Green Was the Earth on the Seventh Day Pod B

Download or read book Green Was the Earth on the Seventh Day Pod B written by Thor Heyerdahl and published by Little, Brown Young Readers. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1930s, Thor Heyerdahl left his home in Norway and set off with his new wife for paradise. Fulfilling a long-held ambition to return to nature, the couple sought, and to a degree found, a natural and unspoiled world on the remote island of Fatu-Hiva in the South Pacific. Based on his original journals, Heyerdahl's documentary account charts how the dreams of a lifetime were transformed into a magical year of hope, excitement and unexpected danger. A timeless story of love and adventure, GREEN WAS THE EARTH... is also an impassioned plea for the preservation of the cities and the seas against the tide of pollution and the pursuit of profit, ideas and beliefs, a cry which would shape one man's life and the environmental concerns of successive generations. Powerful and poignant, GREEN WAS THE EARTH ON THE SEVENTH DAY is a very special kind of autobiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A very young Thor Heyerdahl sets out with his new wife for paradise - a natural and unspoiled world that they sought and, to a degree, found in the South Pacific. It was the first of many journeys that would lead to expeditions and explorations, to a vocation, to the testing of theories against the currents of oceans and history, to books that would include Kon-Tiki, Aku-Aku, and Easter Island, and would bring him worldwide fame and renown." "This warm, spirited, amusing memoir of Heyerdahl's youth is the key to his future life. We see the early emergence of certain of his basic ideas and beliefs: that ancient man, previously believed to he primitive and confined by the oceans, knew more and traveled farther than had been suspected; that the natural world was even then endangered and was well worth preserving; that individuals and peoples could live peacefully together, find common problems and uncommon joys." "This is a love story, an adventure story, a documentary based on journals the young Thor kept at the time, and a prophet's brief but unrestrained, unabashed sermon-polemic on why the seas, like the cities, should no longer be unthinkingly polluted in the pursuit of profits, and why the contempt for nature is as much a crime against the planet as a capital offense against humanity."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Integrated Management of Insect Pests on Canola and Other Brassica Oilseed Crops

Download or read book Integrated Management of Insect Pests on Canola and Other Brassica Oilseed Crops written by Gadi V P Reddy and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively reviews current pest management practices and explores novel integrated pest management strategies in Brassica oilseed crops. It is essential reading for pest management practitioners and researchers working on pest management in canola and other Brassica crops worldwide. Canola, mustard, camelina and crambe are the most important oilseed crops in the world. Canola is the second largest oilseed crop in the world providing 13% of the world's supply. Seeds of these species commonly contain 40% or more oil and produce meals with 35 to 40% protein. However, its production has declined significantly in recent years due to insect pest problems. The canola pest complexes are responsible for high insecticide applications on canola. Many growers rely on calendar-based spraying schedules for insecticide applications. The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella and flea beetles Phyllotreta spp. (P. cruciferae and P. striolata)cause serious damage to canola. In the Northern Great Plains, USA, for instance, P. xylostella is now recorded everywhere that canola is grown. Severe damage to canola plants can be caused by overwintering populations of flea beetles feeding on newly emerged seedlings. Cabbage seed pod weevil (Ceutorhynchus obstrictus), swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii), and tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) are also severe pests on canola. Minor pests include aphids (cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae and turnip aphid, Hyadaphis erysimi) and grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes.
