There have been a number of evaluations of these school movements at a national or more local level, and numerous articles and chapters have been published on aspects of these schools’ activities, but to date these have not been brought together in a single volume that focuses attention on the impact of the movement on education for sustainable development in each country. This is the purpose of this volume. The green schools movement focuses on a whole school approach which aims to include everyone (students, teachers and the local community), to improve school environments, including resource usage and the environmental footprint of the school, to motivate students to take on environmental problems and seek resolutions particularly at a local level but also thinking globally, and to improve students' attitudes and behaviours as part of developing a sustainable mind set.

One consequence is that a movement has emerged to promote the design of schools that have fewer adverse environmental effects. To examine the potential of such design for improving education, several private organizations asked the NRC to review and assess the health and productivity benefits of green schools. This report provides an analysis of the complexity of making such a determination; and an assessment of the potential human health and performance benefits of improvements in the building envelope, indoor air quality, lighting, and acoustical quality. The report also presents an assessment of the overall building condition and student achievement, and offers an analysis of and recommendations for planning and maintaining green schools including research considerations.

It is a dialectical study of cultivating cultivation: how paddy cultivation is learnt and taught, and why it is the way it is. The paddy cultivation that the family is doing at first appears to be ‘traditional’. But by observation and working along with the family, the authors have found that they are engaging in a dynamic process in which they are questioning, investigating, and learning by doing. The authors compare this to the process of doing science, and to the sort of learning that occurs in formal education. The book presents evidence that paddy cultivation has always been varying and evolving through chance and necessity, experimentation, and economic contingencies. Through the example of one farm, the book provides a critique of current attempts to sustain agriculture, and an understanding of the ongoing agricultural crisis.

Book excerpt: Some educational professionals have suggested that so-called green schools would result in superior performance and increased health for students and teachers. While there is no commonly accepted definition of a green school, there are a number of attributes that such schools appear to have: low cost operations, security, healthy and comfortable, and an environment that enhances learning are among them. To determine the health and productivity benefits of green schools, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, the Barr and Kendall Foundations, the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, and the U.S. Green Building Council asked the NRC to examine available studies about the effects of green schools on student learning and teacher productivity. This interim report presents an evaluation of evidence for relationships between various health, learning, and productivity outcomes and five characteristics of green schools: the building envelope, ventilation, lighting, acoustics, and condition. The final report will present evaluations for additional characteristics, a synthesis of the results of all assessments, and promising areas of research.

Book excerpt: In order to achieve the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, sustainable education in tropical developing regions will play a significant role with regard to the rapid growth in population, economy, and climate problems in these regions. The green school movement has been developing in the West for a few decades. The movement has vital influence in leading the global sustainable education system with their visions, themes, teaching curriculum, and green campus design. However, the promotion of green schools in tropical regions faces barriers due to a lack of awareness, and a regional poor education development. This research is aiming to generate design strategies for green schools in tropical developing regions based on theoretical and practical perspectives. In order to achieve this aim, a theoretical design framework will be built based on a summary of checklists from world-leading green school networks, presenting the up-to-date requirements of green schools, to a global standard. This theoretical framework is to examine and analyse green school practices from tropical developing regions. Previous award-winning green schools will be analysed under this summary of checklists. This process is to illustrate how much “green” they have achieved and to investigate their unique design solutions which can be a complement in building the design strategies for these regions. Two schools have achieved most of the requirements from the checklists. However, the result shows that some of the themes are poorly achieved and some of them have a very high rate of feasibility. Advanced solutions for dealing with energy resources, water treatment, sustainable land, school integration, and waste treatments have been applied in these schools at low cost and with simple maintenance. The benefits from green school practices in tropical developing regions play a significant role in these regions with their contribution of advanced design solutions. An updated design strategy based on theoretical and practical perspectives will be built at the end of the research as a primary design guide. This strategy is aiming to lead new schools from tropical developing regions towards becoming green learning facilities.

The approach is illustrated with several case studies which present curricula developed to support school-based innovation in the Middle East and in Guatemala, and adult education in Haiti and Pakistan, and educators preparation at the university level. The approach followed to develop innovative curriculum follows five steps: 1) What are the specific impacts of climate change in this jurisdiction? How do they impact various human populations? 2) What knowledge, dispositions and behaviors could mitigate the impact of climate change and are there ways in which changes in the behaviors of populations in this jurisdiction could slow down climate change? 3) What are the means of delivery to reach each of the specific populations in this jurisdiction who needs to be educated on climate change? 4) What curriculum can help educate each population? 5) What role can the institution we are collaborating with play in advancing climate change education in that jurisdiction? The various chapters of the book present the conceptual foundation of these programs and illustrate how these programs respond to specific characteristics of local contexts. These programs focus in schools, non-formal settings and educator preparation institutions. The chapters offer examples of general value beyond the specific contexts for which they were designed, as they illustrate how in order to be optimally useful climate change education needs to be firmly grounded in the specifics of a context and responsive to that context.
