Book excerpt: A cautionary but optimistic book about the world’s changing climate and the fate of humanity, from Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac—who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015. The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a regenerative world that has net-zero emissions. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can, and must, do to fend off disaster.

Book Future Energy

Download or read book Future Energy written by Trevor Letcher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-07-30 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future Energy will allow us to make reasonable, logical and correct decisions on our future energy as a result of two of the most serious problems that the civilized world has to face; the looming shortage of oil (which supplies most of our transport fuel) and the alarming rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide over the past 50 years (resulting from the burning of oil, gas and coal and the loss of forests) that threatens to change the world’s climate through global warming. Future Energy focuses on all the types of energy available to us, taking into account a future involving a reduction in oil and gas production and the rapidly increasing amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. It is unique in the genre of books of similar title in that each chapter has been written by a scientist or engineer who is an expert in his or her field. The book is divided into four sections: Traditional Fossil Fuel and Nuclear Energy Renewable Energy Potentially Important New Types of Energy New Aspects to Future Energy Usage Each chapter highlights the basic theory and implementation, scope, problems and costs associated with a particular type of energy. The traditional fuels are included because they will be with us for decades to come - but, we hope, in a cleaner form. The renewable energy types includes wind power, wave power, tidal energy, two forms of solar energy, bio-mass, hydroelectricity, geothermal and the hydrogen economy. Potentially important new types of energy include: pebble bed nuclear reactors, nuclear fusion, methane hydrates and recent developments in fuel cells and batteries. Written by experts in the key future energy disciplines from around the globe Details of all possible forms of energy that are and will be available globally in the next two decades Puts each type of available energy into perspective with realistic, future options

Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Green Planet written by Prasun Barua and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Green Planet! First of all, I would like to thank you for reading Green Planet. This is Prasun Barua, the Author of Green Planet. I am an Engineer (Electrical & Electronic) and Member of the European Energy Centre (EEC). Green Planet is all about green technologies and science. The motivation of Green Planet is to create a green and healthy planet utilizing green technologies and science as well as our awareness. Green Planet contains various types of topics categorized to Green Energy, Green Technology, Green Products, Green Finance, Green IT, Green Jobs, Green Nature and Health. It will be a great pleasure if Green Planet keeps contribution in your daily life. Our planet has many significant contributions in our daily life. We are benefiting from our planet in various ways. Green nature is one of the great creations of our planet. For example, trees provide us oxygen, so that we can live. They also provide us fruit which contains various types of vitamins, minerals and nutrition. Vegetables are also a good source of vitamins, minerals and nutrition. These fruits and vegetables are essential for our health. They protect us from various types of diseases. Green forests protect us from many natural disasters. Green technologies and science are also very significant for us. We can generate power with the help of renewable energy resources like the ray of sun, force of air, water, biomass, internal heat of the earth and the tidal wave of the ocean. These technologies are called green technologies. They do not pollute our environment during generating power. They contribute us to reduce the emission of carbon. They are very environmentally friendly technologies indeed. Every day, we are damaging the nature of our planet consciously or unconsciously. For example, we are cutting trees randomly for our daily livelihood. Cutting the huge amount of trees can create imbalance of our ecosystem which impacts on human being and animals. But, we are not creating a huge tree plantation as per our requirement. Moreover, we are creating environment pollution directly or indirectly in many ways. For example, air is polluted by emitting carbon from power stations, various types of industries and vehicles which typically use conventional fuel like oil and gas as energy resources. These activities are causing climate change and global warming, which is very horrendous for us and our planet. We are already suffering some terrible changes of the nature for these activities. If these things continue to happen then our planet will turn into a disaster situation in the future. Moreover, natural resources of our planet like oil, gas, coal etc. are very limited which will be finished in the near future. We can save these natural resources by minimizing our dependency on them and maximizing the use of renewable energy resources like sun, wind, water, biomass, geothermal and tidal wave of the ocean. So, we are realizing that the overall control of protecting our planet is in our hands. We can easily destroy our nature, again we can protect and reconstruct it. If we can increase awareness among ourselves, we can easily protect our planet and create a Green Planet for our next generations.

Book A Planet to Win

Download or read book A Planet to Win written by Kate Aronoff and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All politics are climate politics in the twenty-first century—and this bold book argues for a Green New Deal that confronts both climate change and inequality The age of climate gradualism is over, as unprecedented disasters are exacerbated by inequalities of race and class. We need profound, radical change. A Green New Deal can tackle the climate emergency and rampant inequality at the same time. Cutting carbon emissions while winning immediate gains for the many is the only way to build a movement strong enough to defeat big oil, big business, and the super-rich—starting right now. A Planet to Win explores the political potential and concrete first steps of a Green New Deal. It calls for dismantling the fossil fuel industry and building beautiful landscapes of renewable energy, guaranteeing climate-friendly work and no-carbon housing and free public transit. And it shows how a Green New Deal in the United States can strengthen climate justice movements worldwide. We don’t make politics under conditions of our own choosing, and no one would choose this crisis. But crises also present opportunities. We stand on the brink of disaster—but also at the cusp of wondrous, transformative change.

We all have strong internal and sub-consciousness desire to stay healthy, to be forever young and live in peaceful paradise like conditions. We really do not look forward to the conditions of aging, suffering, and death. Does it make any sense at all, that we work so hard all of our life - wanting to acquire the best education, trying to earn a fortune, attempting to build a happy family life - only to eventually lose it all because of aging, sickness and death? That doesn't seem reasonable, does it? Is there a real purpose to life that makes more sense? Is it universal fate of everything to be born and die? If so there must be a real purpose of achievements we trying to accomplish and a real purpose of the future. What our Earth will look like in 10, 50, 100 or 1,000 years from now? Unfortunately, renowned philosophers, politicians, futurologists and theologians have failed to provide satisfying answers and real solutions to all of the problems that are facing mankind today and will face tomorrow. Unit now. Read this controversial book to understand the true meaning of the future and the life itself.

Download or read book Electrify written by Saul Griffith and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An optimistic--but realistic and feasible--action plan for fighting climate change while creating new jobs and a healthier environment: electrify everything. Climate change is a planetary emergency. We have to do something now—but what? Saul Griffith has a plan. In Electrify, Griffith lays out a detailed blueprint—optimistic but feasible—for fighting climate change while creating millions of new jobs and a healthier environment. Griffith’s plan can be summed up simply: electrify everything. He explains exactly what it would take to transform our infrastructure, update our grid, and adapt our households to make this possible. Billionaires may contemplate escaping our worn-out planet on a private rocket ship to Mars, but the rest of us, Griffith says, will stay and fight for the future. Griffith, an engineer and inventor, calls for grid neutrality, ensuring that households, businesses, and utilities operate as equals; we will have to rewrite regulations that were created for a fossil-fueled world, mobilize industry as we did in World War II, and offer low-interest “climate loans.” Griffith’s plan doesn’t rely on big, not-yet-invented innovations, but on thousands of little inventions and cost reductions. We can still have our cars and our houses—but the cars will be electric and solar panels will cover our roofs. For a world trying to bounce back from a pandemic and economic crisis, there is no other project that would create as many jobs—up to twenty-five million, according to one economic analysis. Is this politically possible? We can change politics along with everything else.

Book excerpt: The story of a young man that would help change the world in which he lived. He stood on the ledge of the great Cauldarian range looking down at his hand in which he held a rock. The beauty of it was overpowering, its green opaque luminescence made him feel falsely at ease. But he knew this was an object of beauty that no Cauldarian should posses. The stone represented the dark side of their history. The ideological faith and power that emanated from it could also be used for good. But its efficacy was wielded as if it were a sword striking at every aspect of the populaces' freedom. So far, its thrusts proved deadly in every instance. It had to be thrown over the ledge and into the night if his people were to survive. Michael awoke from this same dream that he had many times before. It was as if it were only yesterday that his world had changed; it was so different, but in many ways, it was still the same...
