Book excerpt: The exhibition presented a film by Alÿs in collaboration with Julien Devaux alongside a map of the artist's journey, photocollages, paintings, drawings, and a group of sculptures. The film shows Alÿs carrying a dripping can of green paint along the armistice boundary that Moshe Dayan marked on a map with green pencil after Israel's War of Independence ended in 1948. It questions the physicality and cultural relevance of the Green Line, its function as a social and spiritual division in the city of Jerusalem, and its role in the Arab-Israeli conflict. This trilingual exhibition catalogue features interviews conducted by Alÿs with eleven activists, academics, and journalists (Ruben Aberjil, Albert Agazarian, Yael Dayan, Jean Fisher, Rima Hamami, Amira Hass, Nazmi Jobeh, Yael Lerer, Eyal Sivan, Michael Warschawski, Eyal Weizman). Also included are a fold-out map and DVD of the film with options to listen to the recorded interviews.

Book Architectures of Resistance

Download or read book Architectures of Resistance written by Angeliki Sioli and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders between countries, neighbourhoods, people, beliefs, and policies are proliferating and expanding despite what self-proclaimed progressive societies wish or choose to believe. For a wide variety of reasons, the early 21st century is caught struggling between breaking down barriers and raising them. Architecture is complicit in both. It is central to the perpetuation of borders, and key to their dismantling. Architectures of Resistance: Negotiating Borders Through Spatial Practices approaches borders as sites of meaningful encounter between others (other cultures, other nations, other perspectives), guided not by fear or hatred but by respect and tolerance. The contributors to this volume – including architects, urban planners, artists, human geographers, and political scientists – address spatial boundaries as places where social and political conditions are intensified and where new spatial practices of architectural resistance arise. Moving across contemporary, historical, and speculative conditions of borders, Architectures of Resistance discusses new and innovative forms of architectural, artistic, and political practice that facilitate constructive human interaction.

Book The Fine Green Line

Download or read book The Fine Green Line written by John Newport and published by Crown. This book was released on 2001-05-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when a man leaves home for a year to pursue his dream? One day, playing a particularly spectacular round of golf, husband and father John Paul Newport suddenly tastes what it's like to be a pro. Deciding to take a year off and hit the road playing golf's mini-tour circuit, Newport embarks on a wild trip through America's fairways. Over the course of his journey inside the somewhat shady, often hilarious underbelly of professional golf, he uncovers a world of people so totally addicted to golf, to the delusion of achievable perfection, that they sacrifice everything else to the quest. He also discovers the nature of his own obsession with the game, and how this constant pursuit of perfection on the golf course reflects the same challenges and frustrations one encounters in life. What does it take to master such an intricate, unpredictable game? In golf, as in life, why is one so consistently incapable of acting up to one's clearly established potential? As Newport struggles to cross that Fine Green Line--the infinitely subtle yet critical difference between the top golf professionals and those who never quite make it--he realizes that life, like golf, doesn't let you get away with anything. This is a story about letting go of fear, facing challenges, and embracing risks--a compelling personal journey that captures many of the frustrations and elations of midlife both on and off the course.

Book Novel Luminescent Crystalline Materials of Gold I Complexes with Stimuli Responsive Properties

Download or read book Novel Luminescent Crystalline Materials of Gold I Complexes with Stimuli Responsive Properties written by Mingoo Jin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights and investigates novel solid-state luminescent properties of crystals with stimuli-responsive behavior. Several novel molecular designs for controlling crystal structures with photo-physical properties are described, with a special focus on external stimuli-responsive properties. The major goal of the material design concept was to capitalize on the chirality of crystals with stimuli-responsive properties. To allow crystals’ chirality to be controlled and modified by means of external stimulation, the axial chirality of biaryl moiety was employed and, interestingly, produced several novel mechano- and vapo-responsive luminescent properties based on crystal-to-crystal or single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transitions. In addition, the book details how the molecular rotation of luminophores in the solid phase can be used to achieve corresponding thermal-responsive phosphorescence. The reports presented here illustrate how the author has succeeded in controlling structural factors in a bulk environment by using molecular design with linking to photo-physical properties. The content will be of great interest to researchers in the field, and to members of chemical and material science societies.

Book excerpt: This book contains some of the papers presented at the 15th Annual Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods which was held in Granada, Spain, from Septe~ber 6 through September 11, 1987 and hosted by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Andaluda of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientfficas (Spanish Higher Res~arch Council). Fifty scientists from 14 different countries attended the Meeting. A number of review papers were invited but the participants were also allowed to submit the papers of their own choice. The final program was organized in 7 sessions devoted to different scientific subjects of Atmospheric Research. Many thanks are due to Drs. D.J. Baker, D.R. Bates, R.G.H. Greer, E.J. Llewellyn, T.G. Slanger, F.W. Taylor and G. Witt who served as chairmen of the sessions during the Meeting and contributed greatly to its success by carefully directing the discussion period in a stimulating manner after each lecture. We wish to thank the referees who have been so helpful with careful and fruitful comments to improve the quality of the papers published in this book. The scientific program was divided into three parts: Aeronomy, Atmospheric Emissions, and Aurora and Instrumentation. Detailed programs for these sections, and their subsequent editing, were the responsability of the undersigned. Some of the authors presenting papers at the Meeting declined the invitation to publish their manuscripts in the present book for different reasons. Our thanks to all of them for their attendance and presentation.
