Book excerpt: Milk is the one food that sustains life and promotes growth in all newborn mammals, including the human infant. By its very nature, milk is nutritious. Despite this, it has received surprisingly little attention from those interested in the cultural impact of food. In this fascinating volume, Stuart Patton convincingly argues that milk has become of such importance and has so many health and cultural implications that everyone should have a basic understanding of it. This book provides this much-needed introduction. Patton's approach to his subject is comprehensive. He begins with how milk is made in the lactating cell, and proceeds to the basics of cheese making and ice cream manufacture. He also gives extensive consideration to human milk, including breasts, lactation, and infant feeding. Pro and con arguments about the healthfulness of cows' milk are discussed at length and with documentation. Patton explores the growing gap between the public's impressions of milk, and known facts about milk and dairy foods. He argues that the layperson's understanding of milk has deteriorated as a result of propaganda from activists anxious to destroy milk's favorable image, misinformation in the media, and scare implications from medical research hypotheses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Winifred Elizabeth (Manning) Allbeck--"Snicklefritz" as her papa nicknamed her--began her life in the dead of winter when the world was being torn apart by The Great War and devastated by the Spanish Flu, the worst pandemic in recorded history. Nearly 100 years later, she and her daughter, Ellen (Allbeck) Maurer, sat down to tell her intimate story--interwoven with grand changes taking place in American rural life. From kerosene lamps and one-room schools to the Great Depression, times changed-- and so did her life. School years were followed by long-distance loves--captured through letters presented within the book--and her world expanded to include a happy forty-four-year marriage to Frank, whose tale blends into hers. The secluded life of the farm girl of the early 1900s eventually blossomed into adventures in more than two dozen countries on three continents." page 4 of cover

Book excerpt: Cow is the story of a Spanish agricultural labourer, Ambrosio, who goes to Switzerland as a Gastarbeiter. He is bound for Innenwald, a village in the Swiss highlands, and the novel begins as he is about to spend a summer working for Farmer Knuchel. It ends in the abattoir of the neighbouring city, at the end of the seven hard years of labour that have destroyed him. There he sees Blosch, the once magnificent lead cow on Knuchel's farm, now a sad, condemned creature in the abattoir. Cow was acclaimed as a contemporary classic on first publication. Now more than ever it must be read as a book of archaic power about man, his work and his food and, most importantly, as a damning indictment of the relationship between man and the animal world.

One group, the Donner Party, braver or more foolhardy than the rest, chose an untried route that would shorten the distance. It did. It also subjected them to obstacles so formidable that it cost many of them their lives. Yet it preserved their names and the story of their travail down through history-crowded years.
