Book Green Functions for Ordered and Disordered Systems

Download or read book Green Functions for Ordered and Disordered Systems written by Antonios Gonis and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1992 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an exposition of Green functions and multiple scattering theory (MST) as presently used in the study of the electronic structure of matter. Ordered, as well as substitutionally disordered systems are discussed. This volume deals with both a tight binding approach to and a first-principles formulation of Green functions and multiple scattering theory. It includes extended discussions on such topics as the coherent potential approximation (CPA), and the use of full cell potentials in applications of MST to the calculation of electronic structure of solids. Special emphasis is given to the derivation of formulae within the angular momentum representation, as well as to problems. The book contains a collection of problems of particular interest to students.

Book Green s Functions in Quantum Physics

Download or read book Green s Functions in Quantum Physics written by Eleftherios N. Economou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edition the second and main part of the book has been considerably expanded as to cover important applications of the formalism. In Chap.5 a section was added outlining the extensive role of the tight binding (or equivalently the linear combination of atomic-like orbitals) approach to many branches of solid-state physics. Some additional informa tion (including a table of numerical values) regarding square and cubic lattice Green's functions were incorporated. In Chap.6 the difficult subjects of superconductivity and the Kondo effect are examined by employing an appealingly simple connection to the question of the existence of a bound state in a very shallow potential well. The existence of such a bound state depends entirely on the form of the un perturbed density of states near the end of the spectrum: if the density of states blows up there is always at least one bound state. If the density of states approaches zero continuously, a critical depth (and/or width) of the well must be reached in order to have a bound state. The borderline case of a finite discontinuity (which is very important to superconductivity and the Kondo effect) always produces a bound state with an exponentially small binding energy.

Book Green s Functions For Solid State Physicists

Download or read book Green s Functions For Solid State Physicists written by S Doniach and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-06-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the analytic properties in the complex energy plane of the Green's functions of many particle systems account for the physical effects (level shifts, damping, instabilities) characteristic of interacting systems. It concentrates on general physical principles and, while it does not discuss experiments in detail, includes introductions to topics of current research interest, such as singularities (X-ray, Kondo) associated with transient perturbations in an electron gas, the Mott metal-insulator transition in correlated electron systems, and the phenomenon of high Tc superconductivity. This invaluable book grew out of a course of graduate lectures given by S Doniach at the University of London. It will appeal to beginning graduate students in theoretical solid state physics as an introduction to more comprehensive or more specialized texts and also to experimentalists who would like a quick view of the subject. A basic knowledge of solid state physics and quantum mechanics at graduate level is assumed.

Download or read book The Physics of Solids written by Eleftherios N. Economou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-04 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid State Physics emphasizes a few fundamental principles and extracts from them a wealth of information. This approach also unifies an enormous and diverse subject which seems to consist of too many disjoint pieces. The book starts with the absolutely minimum of formal tools, emphasizes the basic principles, and employs physical reasoning (" a little thinking and imagination" to quote R. Feynman) to obtain results. Continuous comparison with experimental data leads naturally to a gradual refinement of the concepts and to more sophisticated methods. After the initial overview with an emphasis on the physical concepts and the derivation of results by dimensional analysis, The Physics of Solids deals with the Jellium Model (JM) and the Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO) approaches to solids and introduces the basic concepts and information regarding metals and semiconductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter we provide an overview of the topological field theory approach to topological insulators. We start by reviewing the topological field theory description of integer quantum Hall states, which also illustrates the general features of topological field theory approach. Then we reviewed the topological field theory approach of three-dimensional topological insulators and its physical consequences. In the last part of this section we discuss the generalizations of topological field theory approach to generic dimensions and other topological states of matter.

Book Electronic Structure of Disordered Alloys Surfaces and Interfaces

Download or read book Electronic Structure of Disordered Alloys Surfaces and Interfaces written by Ilja Turek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, there is an increasing interest in the prediction of properties of classical and new materials such as substitutional alloys, their surfaces, and metallic or semiconductor multilayers. A detailed understanding based on a thus of the utmost importance for fu microscopic, parameter-free approach is ture developments in solid state physics and materials science. The interrela tion between electronic and structural properties at surfaces plays a key role for a microscopic understanding of phenomena as diverse as catalysis, corrosion, chemisorption and crystal growth. Remarkable progress has been made in the past 10-15 years in the understand ing of behavior of ideal crystals and their surfaces by relating their properties to the underlying electronic structure as determined from the first principles. Similar studies of complex systems like imperfect surfaces, interfaces, and mul tilayered structures seem to be accessible by now. Conventional band-structure methods, however, are of limited use because they require an excessive number of atoms per elementary cell, and are not able to account fully for e.g. substitu tional disorder and the true semiinfinite geometry of surfaces. Such problems can be solved more appropriately by Green function techniques and multiple scattering formalism.

Book Topological Insulators

Download or read book Topological Insulators written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-11-23 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topological Insulators, volume six in the Contemporary Concepts of Condensed Matter Series, describes the recent revolution in condensed matter physics that occurred in our understanding of crystalline solids. The book chronicles the work done worldwide that led to these discoveries and provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the field. Starting in 2004, theorists began to explore the effect of topology on the physics of band insulators, a field previously considered well understood. However, the inclusion of topology brings key new elements into this old field. Whereas it was thought that all band insulators are essentially equivalent, the new theory predicts two distinct classes of band insulators in two spatial dimensions and 16 classes in three dimensions. These "topological" insulators exhibit a host of unusual physical properties, including topologically protected gapless surface states and exotic electromagnetic response, previously thought impossible in such systems. Within a short time, this new state of quantum matter, topological insulators, has been discovered experimentally both in 2D thin film structures and in 3D crystals and alloys. It appears that topological insulators are quite common in nature, and there are dozens of confirmed substances that exhibit this behavior. Theoretical and experimental studies of these materials are ongoing with the goal of attaining the fundamental understanding and exploiting them in future practical applications. - Usable as a textbook for graduate students and as a reference resource for professionals - Includes the most recent discoveries and visions for future technological applications - All authors are prominent in the field

Book Quantum Theory of Polymers as Solids

Download or read book Quantum Theory of Polymers as Solids written by Janos J. Ladik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this monograph is to summarize the different quantum mechanical methods developed in the last 20 years to treat the electronic structure of polymers. Owing to the nature of the problem, these methods consist of a mixture of quantum-chemical and solid-state physical tech niques. The theory described in Part I treats, besides the Hartree-Fock problem, the· electron correlation, and it has also been developed for disordered polymeric systems. Though for obvious reasons the book could not include all the existing calculations, each new method des cribed is illustrated by a few applications, with a discussion of the numerical results obtained. Far more details see the Introduction to Part I. The second part contains the theoretical calculation of different properties of polymers based on the methods systematically introduced in the first part. The properties calculated include the electronic and vibrational spectra of polymers, and the computation of their transport, magnetic, and mechanical properties. In cases where reliable ex perimental data are available, the theoretical results are compared with them.
