Book Raising Expectations and Raising Hell

Download or read book Raising Expectations and Raising Hell written by Jane McAlevey and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “breath-taking trip through the union-organizing scene of America in the 21st century” reveals the victories and unconventional strategies of a renowned—and notorious—militant union organizer (Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed) In 1995, in the first contested election in the history of the AFL-CIO, John Sweeney won the presidency of the nation’s largest labor federation, promising renewal and resurgence. Today, less than 7 percent of American private-sector workers belong to a union, the lowest percentage since the beginning of the twentieth century, and public employee collective bargaining has been dealt devastating blows in Wisconsin and elsewhere. What happened? Jane McAlevey is famous—and notorious—in the American labor movement as the hard-charging organizer who racked up a string of victories at a time when union leaders said winning wasn’t possible. Then she was bounced from the movement, a victim of the high-level internecine warfare that has torn apart organized labor. In this engrossing and funny narrative—that reflects the personality of its charismatic, wisecracking author—McAlevey tells the story of a number of dramatic organizing and contract victories, and the unconventional strategies that helped achieve them. Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) argues that labor can be revived, but only if the movement acknowledges its mistakes and fully commits to deep organizing, participatory education, militancy, and an approach to workers and their communities that more resembles the campaigns of the 1930s—in short, social movement unionism that involves raising workers’ expectations (while raising hell).

Book Great Expectations

Download or read book Great Expectations written by Jonathan Skinner and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The negotiation of expectations in tourism is a complex and dynamic process – one that is central to the imagination of cultural difference. Expectations not only affect the lives and experiences of tourists, but also their hosts, and play an important part in the success or failure of the overall tourism experience. It is for this reason, the authors argue, that special attention should be given to how expectations constitute and sustain tourism. The case studies presented here explore what fuels the desires to visit particular places, to what degree expectations inform the experience of the place, and the frequent disjunctions between tourist expectations and experiences. Careful attention is paid to how the imagination of the visitor inspires the imagination of the host, and vice-versa; how tourists and host communities actively imagine, re-imagine, and shape each other’s lives. This realization, has profound consequences, not solely for academic analysis, but for all those who participate in and work within the tourism industry.

Book Attention predictions and expectations and their violation attentional control in the human brain

Download or read book Attention predictions and expectations and their violation attentional control in the human brain written by Simone Vossel and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the burdened scenes of everyday life, our brains must select from among many competing inputs for perceptual synthesis - so that only the most relevant receive full attention and irrelevant (distracting) information is suppressed. At the same time, we must remain responsive to salient events outside our current focus of attention - and balancing these two processing modes is a fundamental task our brain constantly needs to solve. Both the physical saliency of a stimulus, as well as top-down predictions about imminent sensations crucially influence attentional selection and consequently the response to unexpected events. Research over recent decades has identified two separate brain networks involved in predictive top-down control and reorientation to unattended events (or oddball stimuli): the dorsal and ventral fronto-parietal attention systems of the human brain. Moreover, specific electrophysiological brain responses are known to characterize attentional orienting as well as the processing of deviant stimuli. However, many key questions are outstanding. What are the exact functional differences between these cortical attention systems? How are they lateralised in the two hemispheres? How do top-down and bottom-up signals interact to enable flexible attentional control? How does structural damage to one system affect the functionality of the other in brain damaged patients? Are there sensory-specific and supra-modal attentional systems in the brain? In addition to these questions, it is now accepted that brain responses are not only affected by the saliency of external stimuli, but also by our expectations about sensory inputs. How these two influences are balanced, and how predictions are formed in cortical networks, or generated on the basis of experience-dependent learning, are intriguing issues. In this Research Topic, we aim to collect innovative contributions that shed further light on the (cortical) mechanisms of attentional control in the human brain. In particular, we would like to encourage submissions that investigate the behavioural correlates, functional anatomy or electrophysiological markers of attentional selection and reorientation. Special emphasis will be given to studies investigating the context-sensitivity of these attentional processes in relation to prior expectations, trial history, contextual cues or physical saliency. We would like to encourage submissions employing different research methods (psychophysical recordings, neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI, MEG, EEG or ECoG, as well as neurostimulation methods such as TMS or tDCS) in healthy volunteers or neurological patients. Computational models and animal studies are also welcome. Finally, we also welcome submission of meta-analyses and reviews articles that provide new insights into, or conclusions about recent work in the field.

This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utopian Designing is a complete guide to planning and implementing a development or redevelopment project, and includes templates, forms, and resources to help planners and others effectively and efficiently move through the process for the best "utopian" result. Sustainability consists of three different key concepts to be addressed: social equity, economics, and ecological/environmental health. It encompasses a wide variety of disciplines and ideas to reshape our actions and our way of thinking. It's important to understand these concepts, so decisions can be made outside the vacuum of city planners. Utopian Designing focuses on the strategic process, from design through implementation for development and redevelopment of an area. It also looks at sustainable principles to help a community thrive into the future; spur the public input process and information gathering options; obtain data evaluation to select the best project options; secure partnerships, resources, and funding options; and determine implementation strategies to bring a project to fruition. Strategies beyond implementation will ensure your development stays sustainable and meets your needs well into the future. Appendices provide resources and helpful templates to help move through your project's planning and implementation phases.

Book Psychological Responses to Violations of Expectations Perspectives and Answers from Diverse Fields of Psychology

Download or read book Psychological Responses to Violations of Expectations Perspectives and Answers from Diverse Fields of Psychology written by Mario Gollwitzer and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Pavlov's dog expecting food when hearing a bell to stereotypes as expectations about other people’s behaviour, from Bandura’s self-efficacy as expectation for success and failure of one’s own behaviour to the "predictive brain" concept in current perception theories: expectations have been a central construct in different areas of psychological research. In each of these areas, specific concepts, theoretical approaches, and empirical methods have been developed to explain when and why expectations persist and when they do not. Many theories assume that expectations are likely to change in the face of disconfirming evidence. However, sometimes expectations persist even though they are empirically violated, suggesting that they can be “sticky” under certain circumstances. But what are these circumstances? And what are the psychological mechanisms that can explain why and when expectations persist or change after being confronted with expectation-violating evidence? Each contribution of the current book offers insights into individuals’ reactions to violations of expectations. They show that many pieces of the puzzle have been collected in the many sub-displiclines of psychology and that putting them together in an integrative fashion stays a fascinating enterprise.
