This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the Protogeometric through Hellenistic material (ca. 970-175 B.C.) from ASCSA excavations conducted in the 1950s at Lerna in the Argolid, one of the most important prehistoric sites in Greece. The material derives from two main sources: burials from a Geometric cemetery near the settlement and Late Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic wells from the mound proper. Although the material consists primarily of pottery and other ceramic finds, it also includes human remains, animal bones and shells, coins, inscriptions, and bronze and stone objects. Heather Graybehl provides a petrographic analysis, Mark L. Lawall discusses the transport amphoras and import patterns, David S. Reese presents the faunal material, and David Scahill presents and catalogues two Doric capitals. This study not only gives scholars greater insight into ceramic developments in the Argolid, it brings much-needed focus to the material culture of a historic settlement not known for strategic trading, politics, or military prowess. Lerna VIII will greatly facilitate comparative studies with other modestly sized communities in ancient Greece.

Book The Power of the Plan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard F. Galehouse
  • Publisher : Univ of South Carolina Press
  • Release : 2019-07-01
  • ISBN : 1611179718

Download or read book The Power of the Plan written by Richard F. Galehouse and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history and future of the unique partnership between the City of Columbia and the University of South Carolina State universities are more than just places of higher learning, more indeed than just campuses or buildings, and more than just students scurrying from class to class. They are a symbol of the future of the nation and a statement about the commitment the sponsoring state has made to its people. In turn each city or town that hosts, develops, and nurtures these institutions recognizes that it holds within the community one of the more precious jewels in a state's crown. So it is with the city of Columbia and the University of South Carolina. Richard F. Galehouse has been involved in the university's master planning work for more than twenty-five years, making him more than qualified to take a lapidary look not only at the present and unfolding plans for the university, but also at the historic path that has brought it to its current luster. Encompassing its earliest days as Columbia College in 1801 (almost two decades before Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia); the devastating effects of the Civil War; the "crisis years" between 1861 and 1915, when the institution was closed twice and reorganized five times; and some bungled urban planning in the 1950s and 60s, Galehouse's candid examination details the growth of the university and speaks hopefully about its present and its future. The city of Columbia and the University of South Carolina are unique in how they were designed to grow together, yet cosmopolitan in how they grapple collectively with the challenges and difficulties of combining the city's needs with the university's to create a symbiotic but nevertheless holistic community. The plan for this meeting of minds and needs is the meat of this narrative. The original and iconic "Horseshoe grid" of the city is echoed in the "Innovista" master plan outlined here, which will create in the city a shining setting for the university, one of its own most highly prized treasures. A foreword is provided by Patrick L. Phillips, global chief executive officer of the Urban Land Institute (2009–2018) and an instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design Executive Education Program and at the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University.

Book The Globalized City

Download or read book The Globalized City written by Frank Moulaert and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics that have accompanied the implementation of large-scale Urban Development Projects (UDPs) in nine European cities within the European Union (EU). It contributes to the analysis of the relationship between urban restructuring and social exclusion/integration in the context of the emergence of the European-wide 'new' regimes of urban governance. These regimes reflect the reawakening of neo-liberal policy and the rise of a New Urban Policy favouring private investments and deregulation of property and labour markets. The selected UDPs further reflect global pressures and changing systems of local, regional, and/or national regulation and governance. These projects, while being decidedly local, capture global trends and new national and local policies as they are expressed in particular institutional forms and strategic practices. The large scale urban interventions were deliberately chosen as reflections of a particular hegemonic and dominant expression of urban policy, as pursued during the 1990s. The book provides a panoramic view of urban change in some of Europe's greatest cities. The nine case-studies include: The Europeanization of Brussels, The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, the new financial district in Dublin, the science-university-technology complex 'Adlershof' in Berlin, the 1998 World Expo in Lisbon, Athens's bid to stage the Olympic Games, Vienna's Donau City, Copenhagen's Oresund project, and Naples' new business district. These case-studies testify to the unshakable belief the city elites hold in the healing effects that the production of new urban mega-projects and -events has on their city's vitality and development potential. The book also analyses the down side of this development in terms of social exclusion, the formation of new urban elites, and the consolidation of less democratic forms of urban governance. The principal aim is to show how the production of these new urban spaces is actually also part of the production of a new polity, a new economy, and new forms of living urban life that are not very promising for a socially harmonious and just future for metropolitan urban Europe.

She examines the regime's goals and strategies for controlling the rural people through development projects and demographic shaping to create a strong Turkish identity and a loyal citizenry. The book outlines the implementation of new rural settlements, particularly following the 1934 Settlement Law, with a geographic focus on two cities - Izmir and Elazig - with varied socio-economic and ethnic standing in the state program.
