Book Greek Tragedy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Tragedy Classic Reprint written by J. T. Sheppard and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Tragedy His book does not pretend to be a summary of known facts relating to Greek Tragedy. Nor is it, except incidentally, an essay in critical apprecia tion. Its aim is to help modern readers to enjoy Greek plays. For that reason stress has been laid on ideas and conventions which are not likely to be at first sight obvious to an English reader. That is why more space is given to Aeschylus than to either of his successors. That is also the explanation of the brief allusion which is made to some of the greatest of Greek tragedies. The Oedipus Tyrannus, for instance, depends for its effect upon qualities which are apparent, even in translation, to all readers who care for poetry and drama. It may be added that this book will be of little use unless the reader will turn to the plays them selves, either in the original or at least in a translation. Finally, remarks which are made in regard to one play often apply with equal force to many others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Greek Tragedy: For English Readers The present volume does not profess to be a repertory of facts and theories respecting the Greek Drama. For such results of learned and archaeological research I would confidently refer the reader to Haigh's Attic T/zeatre, or, if a German scholar, to A. Muller's and to the books there cited. My hope has been that by recording impressions made on myself by somewhat close and long-continued study of the originals, I might assist the reader of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, whether in Greek or English, to enter more completely into the spirit and intention of their works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Greek Tragedy Every true tragedy turns on a conflict, whether it be a merely personal rivalry between one man and another, or a conflict on a grander scale, a struggle between opposing principles. Greek tragedy must always be' peculiarly arresting, because the Greek tra gedians combined in a curiously subtle way a conflict of persons with a conflict of principles. They present Situations in which there is a tremendous conflict of personality and at the same time a much vaster conflict of principle. In each case I have devoted myself to analysing this conflict of principle, and I have mostly left to the reader's own insight the estimation of the rival characters. Book Specimens of Greek Tragedy

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of Greek Tragedy: AEschylus and Sophocles Greek drama, forerunner of ours, had its origin in the festival of Dionysus, god of wine, which was celebrated with dance, song, and recitative. The recitative, being in character, was improved into the Drama, the chief author of the improvement, tradition says, being Thespis. But the dance and song were retained, and became the Chorus, that peculiar feature of the Greek play. This seems to be the general account of the matter, and especially of the combina tion of the lyric with the dramatic element, so far as we can see through the mist of an unrecorded age. Book The Dream in Homer and Greek Tragedy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dream in Homer and Greek Tragedy Classic Reprint written by William Stuart Messer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dream in Homer and Greek Tragedy I believe that few of the discussions of the dream, generally accessible, have escaped my examination. Furthermore, I have made a collection of the passages in Greek and Latin literature in which dreams are related in full or in which reference is made to dreams, scarcely short of entire completeness, down through the first quarter Of the second century, so that on any point the guiding principle of a knowledge of how the dream has been treated elsewhere has always been available. On the basis of this reading I have, in the footnotes, defended positions taken in the text and discussed allied aspects of the dream, contenting myself, however, with the citation of authorities and parallel passages which may be looked upon as illustrative rather than as exhaustive. The study Of the art and the structure Of poetry concerns itself with a great number Of smaller problems of technique, of which that involved in the use of the dream is one. The solu tion of the problems Of the technique of the dream, then, will to some extent throw light upon that larger field. Book The Plays of Sophocles Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Plays of Sophocles Classic Reprint written by Sophocles Sophocles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sophocles, born in 497 BCE and who lived until the age of 90, is regarded as one of the great ancient Greek tragedy writers, along with Aeschylus and Euripides. Of the more than 100 plays written by Sophocles, only seven have survived intact. This collection, The Plays of Sophocles presents the complete works of Sophocles' seven surviving plays: Ajax, Antigone, The Women of Trachis, Oedipus the King, Electra, Philocetets, and Oedipus at Colonus. Translated here by Thomas Francklin, this collection provides the rare opportunity to read the works that form the legacy of Sophocles. The Theban plays are perhaps Sophocles most well known works: Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus. These tell the story of tragic hero Oedipus, a man who kills his own father and marries his own mother, without being aware of the familial ties. All three are classics of Greek tragedy and must-reads for any fan of the classics. The other works in this collection are similarly tragic and represent clearly the style of Sophocles. Challenging and moving, his work still resonates to this day. Francklin's translation makes a valiant effort at capturing the lyricism and poetic nature of Sophocles' originals. Whether you deem this to be an excellent translation or not may simply be a matter of personal preferences, however it is certainly technically sound. The Plays of Sophocles is a collection of some of the most important and well known Greek tragedies that exist. Sophocles' work will doubtlessly impact the modern reader, whether you are familiar with his writings or a first time reader. This collection is thus highly recommended for anybody remotely interested in classic tragedy or the work of Sophocles specifically. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aeschylus IN order rightly to understand the drama of the Greeks, and especially their tragedy, we must rid our selves, as far as possible, of those associations which now cling in England round the names of play and theatre. For our modern plays are so unlike a Greek tragedy, and the position which they occupy is so entirely different from that of the Athenian theatre, that the few points which both have in common are more likely to impede than assist us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Job as a Greek Tragedy The present work is the record and result of reflec tions to which I was compelled by an enduring curiosity about the origin, character, and significance of the false, but very powerful and very ironic tradition con cerning the life and labor of the children of Israel. This curiosity has driven me into many fields where I am the merest amateur and worse, and into others where the most expert is equally with the uninitiate a Childe Roland at the Dark Tower. Such guidance as was possible for me I owe to the kindness and tolerant sym pathy of Professor George Foot Moore, whose great minded scholarship treats even tyros as if they mattered. Download or read book The Greek Plays written by Sophocles and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark anthology of the masterpieces of Greek drama, featuring all-new, highly accessible translations of some of the world’s most beloved plays, including Agamemnon, Prometheus Bound, Bacchae, Electra, Medea, Antigone, and Oedipus the King Featuring translations by Emily Wilson, Frank Nisetich, Sarah Ruden, Rachel Kitzinger, Mary Lefkowitz, and James Romm The great plays of Ancient Greece are among the most enduring and important legacies of the Western world. Not only is the influence of Greek drama palpable in everything from Shakespeare to modern television, the insights contained in Greek tragedy have shaped our perceptions of the nature of human life. Poets, philosophers, and politicians have long borrowed and adapted the ideas and language of Greek drama to help them make sense of their own times. This exciting curated anthology features a cross section of the most popular—and most widely taught—plays in the Greek canon. Fresh translations into contemporary English breathe new life into the texts while capturing, as faithfully as possible, their original meaning. This outstanding collection also offers short biographies of the playwrights, enlightening and clarifying introductions to the plays, and helpful annotations at the bottom of each page. Appendices by prominent classicists on such topics as “Greek Drama and Politics,” “The Theater of Dionysus,” and “Plato and Aristotle on Tragedy” give the reader a rich contextual background. A detailed time line of the dramas, as well as a list of adaptations of Greek drama to literature, stage, and film from the time of Seneca to the present, helps chart the history of Greek tragedy and illustrate its influence on our culture from the Roman Empire to the present day. With a veritable who’s who of today’s most renowned and distinguished classical translators, The Greek Plays is certain to be the definitive text for years to come. Praise for The Greek Plays “Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm deftly have gathered strong new translations from Frank Nisetich, Sarah Ruden, Rachel Kitzinger, Emily Wilson, as well as from Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm themselves. There is a freshness and pungency in these new translations that should last a long time. I admire also the introductions to the plays and the biographies and annotations provided. Closing essays by five distinguished classicists—the brilliant Daniel Mendelsohn and the equally skilled David Rosenbloom, Joshua Billings, Mary-Kay Gamel, and Gregory Hays—all enlightened me. This seems to me a helpful light into our gathering darkness.”—Harold Bloom
