Book Greek Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by A. Furtwängler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Roman Sculpture This convenient small edition of the M onurnents of Greek and Roman Sculpture just published in folio form appears in accordance with the wishes of a large number of professors and teachers of higher education in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It should enable both teacher and student to form an idea of the contents of the large work. The explanations and descriptions have been revised and improved by the authors, and translations of all the quota tions in foreign languages have been added. The text is divided into ten groups arranged from an historical point of view and in regard to subject. Each of these groups is preceded by a new collective sketch which aims at a com prehensive View of the various examples from a broad and generalised standpoint. But at the same time the work still preserves its character as a collection of monuments and does not pretend to take the place of a complete history of the subject. These short article's are merely intended to give to each example its proper position in relation to the development Of antique art. As all the principal periods are here presented the text Of the groups constitutes a survey of the whole development of Greek and Roman sculpture. Quotations from modern authors have been almost entirely avoided; only ancient writers are introduced in relevant passages. The Special demands of schools and wider circles of cultured people have been kept in mind. The pictorial part of the work has also been increased in this edition by one or two examples. The two authors have worked on a mutually arranged plan in equal parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edmund Von Mach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Part Ten - Portraits - is the least complete part of the collection, especially as regards Roman portraits. This had to be so, because the number of extant Roman por traits is so large that even a fair selection from them would have been out of proportion to the other parts of the book. No attempt, therefore, has been made to give portraits of all men of note. The aim rather has been to select statues and busts which illustrate the develop ment of portrait-sculpture, irrespective of the persons portrayed. In Part Eleven - Heads the specialist may miss some favorite specimens, but here again the material from which to draw is so large that a rigid sifting process became necessary. The principle followed was similar to that adopted for Part Ten. Heads were included in the list when they illustrated the development of sculpture, and often excluded, although with considerable regret, when their chief claim to attention was based on their pleasing appearance. Thought of the Author's mode of treating his subject, few will deny the importance of the subject itself. The interest it awakens is altogether independent of the View which we may take of the future of modern sculpture. If, as many think, and notably the more eminent sculptors them selves, Sculpture is a lost art, it has, at any rate, the interest and value of a dead language - 4a language in which the noblest thoughts and tenderest feelings of the most highly gifted people of the world have been written in characters of surpassing clearness and beauty. Book Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edward Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Since the publication of the former catalogue, the col lection of casts has increased to such an extent that the Trustees of the Museum have found the continued issue of supplements impracticable, and have therefore ordered the preparation of a new catalogue. Advantage has been taken of this Opportunity to offer what it is hoped may be both a guide for general visitors, and a useful handbook for students, for whom especially the notes following the title of each object are intended. The statements regard ing restorations are based upon those of archaeologists who have made especial studies of the respective objects, com pared with photographs and with the author's notes. No attempt has been made to give the complete literature of each object, as this would have increased the size of the catalogue unnecessarily. The references are generally either to the best illustrations of the work described, or to one or two of the most important essays upon it, and are given partly as an assistance in identifying the casts with their originals, and partly for the benefit of those who may wish an exhaustive description of some particular work. In general histories and manuals of ancient sculpture stu dents can easily find the allusions to the objects of which casts are here exhibited. A list of the more important of these histories is given below. With few exceptions, the Greek names of deities and heroes are given, in preference to their Roman synonymes. For the convenience of those familiar only with the latter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Afterlife of Greek and Roman Sculpture

Download or read book The Afterlife of Greek and Roman Sculpture written by Lea Stirling and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, statuary décor was a main characteristic of any city, sanctuary, or villa in the Roman world. However, from the third century CE onward, the prevalence of statues across the Roman Empire declined dramatically. By the end of the sixth century, statues were no longer a defining characteristic of the imperial landscape. Further, changing religious practices cast pagan sculpture in a threatening light. Statuary production ceased, and extant statuary was either harvested for use in construction or abandoned in place. The Afterlife of Greek and Roman Sculpture is the first volume to approach systematically the antique destruction and reuse of statuary, investigating key responses to statuary across most regions of the Roman world. The volume opens with a discussion of the complexity of the archaeological record and a preliminary chronology of the fate of statues across both the eastern and western imperial landscape. Contributors to the volume address questions of definition, identification, and interpretation for particular treatments of statuary, including metal statuary and the systematic reuse of villa materials. They consider factors such as earthquake damage, late antique views on civic versus “private” uses of art, urban construction, and deeper causes underlying the end of the statuary habit, including a new explanation for the decline of imperial portraiture. The themes explored resonate with contemporary concerns related to urban decline, as evident in post-industrial cities, and the destruction of cultural heritage, such as in the Middle East.

Book How to Read Greek Sculpture

Download or read book How to Read Greek Sculpture written by Seán Hemingway and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sculptural tradition developed by the ancient Greeks is justifiably considered one of the most remarkable achievements of Western art. This richly illustrated volume introduces eight centuries of Greek sculpture, from the early rectilinear designs of the Geometric period (ca. 900–700 B.C.) through the groundbreaking creativity of the Archaic and Classical periods to the dramatic monumental achievements of the Hellenistic Age (323–31 B.C.). A generous selection of objects and materials—ranging from the sacred to the everyday, from bronze and marble to gold, ivory, and terracotta—allows for an especially appealing picture not only of Greek art but also of life in ancient Greece. Sculptures of deities such as Zeus, Athena, and Eros and architectural elements from temples are included, as are depictions of athletes and animals (both domesticated and wild), statuettes of dancers and actors, funerary reliefs, perfume vases, and jewelry. The informative text provides a comprehensive introduction and insightful discussions of forty objects selected from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Full-page photographs of the featured works are supplemented by many illuminating details and comparative illustrations. The latest in The Met’s widely acclaimed How to Read series, this publication reveals how, more than two millennia ago, Greek artists brilliantly captured the fundamental aspects of the human condition.

Book Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture

Download or read book Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture written by Adolf Furtwangler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture: A Series of Essays on the History of Art The increasingly rich discoveries of original works on Greek soil have lately somewhat thrown into the shade the study of the copies, for which we are mainly indebted to Italy, not to the advantage of our science. The original sculptures from Greece are, with those rare exceptions to which I have already alluded, works of the second or even inferior rank. The Roman copies, on the other hand, have preserved that pick from the masterpieces of the classical epoch which pleased ancient taste and connoisseurship in the times of highest culture. It is the pick of the best and the most famous that antiquity possessed. Among these copies it is that we must look for the masterpieces mentioned by the authors, for the statues that made epochs or initiated movements. \vere we to possess only copies of the noble creations of a Raphael, a Michelangelo, or a Rembrandt, these would certainly be better worth one's study than the hosts of other originals of the time. Book Gender Identity and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture

Download or read book Gender Identity and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture written by Rosemary Barrow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture offers incisive analysis of selected works of ancient art through a critical use of cutting-edge theory from gender studies, body studies, art history and other related fields. The book raises important questions about ancient sculpture and the contrasting responses that the individual works can be shown to evoke. Rosemary Barrow gives close attention to both original context and modern experience, while directly addressing the question of continuity in gender and body issues from antiquity to the early modern period through a discussion of the sculpture of Bernini. Accessible and fully illustrated, her book features new translations of ancient sources and a glossary of Greek and Latin terms. It will be an invaluable resource and focus for debate for a wide range of readers interested in ancient art, gender and sexuality in antiquity, and art history and gender and body studies more broadly.

Book Hellenistic and Roman Ideal Sculpture

Download or read book Hellenistic and Roman Ideal Sculpture written by Rachel Meredith Kousser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Rachel Kousser draws on contemporary reception theory to present a new approach to Hellenistic and Roman ideal sculpture. She analyzes the Romans' preference for retrospective, classicizing statuary based on Greek models as opposed to the innovative creations prized by modern scholars. Using a case study of a particular sculptural type, a forceful yet erotic image of Venus, Kousser argues that the Romans self-consciously employed such sculptures to represent their ties to the past in a rapidly evolving world. Kousser presents Hellenistic and Roman ideal sculpture as an example of a highly effective artistic tradition that was, by modern standards, extraordinarily conservative. At the same time, the Romans' flexible and opportunistic use of past forms also had important implications for the future: it constituted the origins of classicism in Western art.
