Book Ennion Master of Roman Glass

Download or read book Ennion Master of Roman Glass written by Christopher S. Lightfoot and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among glass craftsman active in the 1st century A.D., the most famous and gifted was Ennion, who hailed from the coastal city of Sidon in modern Lebanon. Ennion’s glass stood out for its quality and popularity. His products are distinguished by the fine detail and precision of their relief decoration, which imitates designs found on contemporaneous silverware. This compact, but thorough volume examines the most innovative and elegant known examples of Roman mold-blown glass, providing a uniquely comprehensive, up-to-date study of these exceptional works. Included are some twenty-six remarkably preserved examples of drinking cups, bowls, and jugs signed by Ennion himself, as well as fifteen additional vessels that were clearly influenced by him. The informative texts and illustrations effectively convey the lasting aesthetic appeal of Ennion’s vessels, and offer an accessible introduction to an ancient art form that reached its apogee in the early decades of the Roman Empire.

Book Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Collection of Mediterranean Antiquities Vol 4 The Coptic Textiles

Download or read book Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Collection of Mediterranean Antiquities Vol 4 The Coptic Textiles written by Wendy Landry and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue of the Coptic Textiles in the Collection of Mediterranean Antiquities at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts provides a detailed analysis of 64 textiles from both historical and weaving practice points of view. This approach provides a fuller understanding of the cultural situation in which such textiles were produced and circulated. Dr. Landry’s experience of over 40 years of weaving and scholarship highlights the elements of knowledge and skill held and applied by weavers in Antiquity. This perspective complements and expands on the focus on imagery usually provided by art historians regarding textiles of this period. This catalogue shows how much more cultural information can be accessed when the technical, economic, and practical character of both production and use are adequately integrated into the study of material artefacts.

Book Studies on Old Kingdom Reliefs and Sculpture in the Hermitage

Download or read book Studies on Old Kingdom Reliefs and Sculpture in the Hermitage written by Andrey O. Bolshakov and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the first complete publication of a relatively small but interesting collection of Old Kingdom monuments in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Twenty-two pieces are reproduced as black-and-white photographs and line drawings. Among them are two statues, fourteen reliefs and relief fragments, five offering stones and a fragment of an ointment tablet; several objects in museums of Cairo, Copenhagen, and Cambridge belonging to the same people are published as well. Most of these monuments were never published or are known only through books and periodicals in Russian that usually are not available in Egyptological libraries. Although the Hermitage pieces were acquired at antiquities dealers without any documentation, their modern history is traced and in a half of cases either their provenance is reconstructed or related monuments are found. A limited number of monuments allowed the author to discuss them to a much greater extent than it is common in museum publications and, thus, the book in spite of its structure of a catalogue virtually is a detailed study of various problems of Old Kingdom history and ideology.

Download or read book The Keros Hoard written by Panagiōta I. Sōtērakopoulou and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keros is a small, mountainous, and now-deserted island situated between Naxos, Amorgos, and Ios in the southeast Cyclades. Keros became widely known after a series of extensive and clandestine excavations in the 1950s and early 1960s, which concentrated on a particularly rich deposit of material at the site of Kavos, situated at its barren western extremity. These major lootings resulted in the illegal export from Greece of a large number of Early Cycladic objects - mostly fragmentary marble figurines - that flooded the international antiquities market under the general name the Keros Hoard. The cache was said to have included at least 350 Cycladic objects and is now widely dispersed. This study features a review of the archaeological investigations on Keros; a discussion of the so-called Keros Hoard; an extensive account of the various aspects of Cycladic figurines; and a catalogue of the objects identified as coming from the Hoard. Also included are an analysis of the data derived form the Hoard, the results of the study comparing the fragments in the Museum of Cycladic Art with those discovered at Kavos during official archaeological investigations; an interpretation of the Ho

Book The Tomb of Three Foreign Wives of Tuthmosis III

Download or read book The Tomb of Three Foreign Wives of Tuthmosis III written by Christine Lilyquist and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2003 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book results from a collaborative effort to reconstruct the 15th-century BC tomb of three foreign wives of Tuthmosis III, discovered and robbed by villagers near Luxor in 1916. A general account was published by Herbert Winlock in 1948 (The Treasure of Three Egyptian Princesses, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). The present volume differs substantially in the type and extent of documentation provided and in interpretation. Verification is provided of tomb provenance for a number of objects, for example, while other objects previously thought to have come from the tomb are now considered forgeries. The text explores and documents the location of the tomb in the southwest valleys at Thebes; field work conducted by The Metropolitan Museum of Art at the site in 1988; art market finds alleged to have come from the tomb; and the names of the foreign wives and the life they might have led.

  • Author : Olaf E. Kaper
  • Publisher : Peeters Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9789042912175
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book The Egyptian God Tutu written by Olaf E. Kaper and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tutu (Tithoes) was a popular god in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods of Egyptian history, with his origins in the earlier Egyptian religious tradition. The god provided protection against demons, and his appearance as a striding sphinx was often combined with symbols of his power and visual references to demons and other divinities. The god Tutu demonstrates the continuing vitality of the pharaonic religion under the pressure of foreign cultures and ideas. This monograph provides the first comprehensive study of the god Tutu. It is based upon a collection of attestations, largely unpublished, which derive from monuments in various parts of Egypt and from museum collections all over the world. Moreover, the results of recent archaeological field work in Shenhur and in the temple of Tutu in the Dakhla Oasis have been included in full. The catalogue of monuments is accompanied by an analysis of the god Tutu, his iconography and his place in the Egyptian religion.
