Book Cultural Transfer of Music between Byzantium and the West

Download or read book Cultural Transfer of Music between Byzantium and the West written by Nina-Maria Wanek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of Greek language ordinary chants (Gloria/Doxa, Credo/Pisteuo, Sanctus/Hagios and Agnus Dei/Amnos tu theu) in Western manuscripts from the 9th to 14th centuries. These chants – known as “Missa Graeca” – have been the subject of academic research for over a hundred years. So far, however, research has been almost exclusively from a Western point of view, without knowledge of the Byzantine sources. For the first time, this book presents an in-depth analysis of these chants and their historical, linguistic and theological-liturgical environment from a Byzantine perspective. The new approach enables the author to refute numerous (and largely contradictory) theories on the origin and development of the Missa Graeca and provides new answers to old questions.

Book excerpt: Gregory of Nyssa's De hominis opificio, a treatise on Genesis 1,26, is a key text for the understanding of Eastern Christian anthropology. In the 14th century a Serb translated the 31 chapters of this opus from Greek. The earliest dissemination of the text seems to have been restricted to Athos and the region of Montenegro, Macedonia and Western Bulgaria. The present volume contains a critical edition of the Slavonic text together with the Greek original, an extensive commentary in which text-critical, linguistic and translation-related issues are examined and a glossary with a considerable number of athesaurista.

Book Diplomacy in the Early Islamic World

Download or read book Diplomacy in the Early Islamic World written by Maria Vaiou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arab messengers played a vital role in the medieval Islamic world and its diplomatic relations with foreign powers. An innovative treatise from the 10th Century ("Rusul al-Muluk", "Messengers of Kings") is perhaps the most important account of the diplomacy of the period, and it is here translated into English for the first time. "Rusul al-Muluk" draws on examples from the Qur'an and other sources which extend from the period of al-jahiliyya to the time of the 'Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tasim (218-227/833-842). In the only medieval Arabic work which exists on the conduct of messengers and their qualifications, the author Ibn al-Farr rejects jihadist policies in favor of quiet diplomacy and a pragmatic outlook of constructive realpolitik. "Rusul al-Muluk" is an extraordinarily important and original contribution to our understanding of the early Islamic world and the field of International Relations and Diplomatic History.
