Book Acts in its Ancient Literary Context

Download or read book Acts in its Ancient Literary Context written by Loveday Alexander and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-03-29 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, gathered for the first time, is a collection of Loveday Alexander's critically acclaimed essays on the Acts of the Apostles. In this collection of essays, Alexander addresses the central question 'What kind of book is Acts?' She approaches the text of Acts with a finely-tuned sense of the complexities of the conventional codes that governed reading and writing in the classical world, and argues that the differences between New Testament texts and contemporary writings in the Graeco-Roman world can be as revealing as the similarities. The collection begins with Alexander's classic analysis of the literary codes governing the preface to Luke's two-volume work, in which she challenges the dominant consensus that the language and structure of the preface evoke the generic conventions of Greek historiography. That insight opens up the possibility of reading Acts alongside other ancient literary genres: the lives of the Greek philosophers, the Greek novels of Chariton and Xenophon of Ephesus, Roman itineraries, Greek and Jewish apologetic, and Latin epic. The process, like the narrative of Acts itself, becomes a rich and evocative voyage of exploration, shedding light both on the varied social worlds of the author and his first readers, and on the complex communication problems underlying the creation of early Christian discourse. This is volume 289 in the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement series and is also part of the Early Christianity in Context series.

Book The Empire of Civilization

Download or read book The Empire of Civilization written by Brett Bowden and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “civilization” comes with considerable baggage, dichotomizing people, cultures, and histories as “civilized”—or not. While the idea of civilization has been deployed throughout history to justify all manner of interventions and sociopolitical engineering, few scholars have stopped to consider what the concept actually means. Here, Brett Bowden examines how the idea of civilization has informed our thinking about international relations over the course of ten centuries. From the Crusades to the colonial era to the global war on terror, this sweeping volume exposes “civilization” as a stage-managed account of history that legitimizes imperialism, uniformity, and conformity to Western standards, culminating in a liberal-democratic global order. Along the way, Bowden explores the variety of confrontations and conquests—as well as those peoples and places excluded or swept aside—undertaken in the name of civilization. Concluding that the “West and the rest” have more commonalities than differences, this provocative and engaging bookultimately points the way toward an authentic intercivilizational dialogue that emphasizes cooperation over clashes.

  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book The Origins of History written by Herbert Butterfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distillation of the thought and research to which Herbert Butterfield devoted the last twenty years of his life to, this book, originally published in 1981, traces how differently people understood the relevance of their past and its connection with their religion. It examines ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia; the political perceptiveness of the Hittites; the Jewish sense of God in history, of promise and fulfilment; the classical achievement of scientific history; and the unique Chinese tradition of historical writing. The author explains the problems of the early Christians in relating their traditions of Jesus to their life and faith and the emergence, when Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire, of a new historical understanding. The book then charts the gradual growth of a sceptical approach to recorded authority in Islam and Western Europe, the reconstruction of the past by deductive analysis of the surviving evidence and the secularisation of the eighteenth century.

Book The Shape of the Past

  • Author : John Warwick Montgomery
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2008-02-05
  • ISBN : 1606084496
  • Pages : 399 pages

Download or read book The Shape of the Past written by John Warwick Montgomery and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-02-05 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Montgomery contends that no one can sit in a house by the side of the road and watch the world go by. Everyone is caught up in the flux of human life, and there is no naturalistic resting resting place within human history from which one can gain a universal, absolute perspective on man's life. Christianity is the only answer to this basic human predicament, for it claims, and by the resurrection backs up its claim, that there is a God and that He entered human history and revealed its essential nature.
