Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world's leading authorities on ancient bronze sculpture, Carol C. Mattusch urges us to discard the terms "Greek original" and "Roman copy" and to adopt instead terms that distinguish unique works from those produced in series and those produced as variations on a theme. She discusses the dating of bronzes based on criteria of technique and style, and considers technical innovations in the art of portraiture. Most controversially, she offers evidence that Greek artists cast bronzes in series based on a single model. Mattusch points out that examples of series castings can be found among the statuettes and vessel attachments from the Geometric and Orientalizing periods. From the Classical period onward, statues also appear to have been cast in series. Certain styles and types of images that achieved widespread popularity during the Hellenistic and Roman periods were produced in large quantities and in several different places. This book will raise important new questions in the field of Classical bronze sculpture. How long might a single model remain in use and how far might casts from it be transported for production? What is the significance of an artist's signature on a work in a series and what influence was wielded by the potential buyer? And, given these issues, what should the criteria be for distinguishing Greek works from Roman ones? Classical Bronzes is generously illustrated, including an eight-page color insert.

For the most part, therefore, only such sculptures are included in the work as are found in collections of this kind, or in the British Museum. In dealing with the later portion of the history of sculpture, I have endeavoured to follow the same principles as in the earlier portion, and consequently I am again precluded from the discussion of many interesting problems as to which I do not feel justified in expressing a dogmatic opinion, while I have not space to give, even in summary, the arguments on each side. I regret that I am unable to fulfil my conditional promise Of an appendix on the discoveries of the French excavators at Delphi, no Official publication having as yet been issued. Download or read book Greek Bronze Statuary written by Carol C. Mattusch and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freestanding bronze statuary was the primary mode of artistic expression in classical Greece, yet it was not until the nineteenth century that any original large statues of that period were unearthed. Although ancient literature has preserved information about the most famous Greek sculptors who worked in bronze, our perception of the art has been limited by the small number of extant originals from the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. there remain fewer than ten large cast bronze statues, a like number of bronze heads, an assortment of fragments, and some clay molds for casting. Carol Mattusch enriches our knowledge of this beloved but elusive art form in a comprehensive study of the style and techniques of bronze statuary during the Archaic (6th century B.C.) and Classical (5th century B.C.) periods.

Book A History of Greek Sculpture Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Greek Sculpture Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexander Stuart Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 of 2 IT may be that an acquaintance with the personality of an artist, does not promote in the end a true judgment of his work. But we cannot deny that it has often furnished the pages of the historian with charm and vivacity. The History of Greek Sculpture presents no such opportunity. It has no Lives to beguile the student along an arduous path. Only here and there an incident, handed down on mostly a dubious authority, breaks the narrative of work done and the examination of what remains of it to our day. The sculptors of ancient Greece seem to have lost themselves in their art, and this might have been a less misfortune for us, if it also had not since their time disappeared in a great measure. Book Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture

Download or read book Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture written by Adolf Furtwangler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Greek Sculpture: A Series of Essays on the History of Art The increasingly rich discoveries of original works on Greek soil have lately somewhat thrown into the shade the study of the copies, for which we are mainly indebted to Italy, not to the advantage of our science. The original sculptures from Greece are, with those rare exceptions to which I have already alluded, works of the second or even inferior rank. The Roman copies, on the other hand, have preserved that pick from the masterpieces of the classical epoch which pleased ancient taste and connoisseurship in the times of highest culture. It is the pick of the best and the most famous that antiquity possessed. Among these copies it is that we must look for the masterpieces mentioned by the authors, for the statues that made epochs or initiated movements. \vere we to possess only copies of the noble creations of a Raphael, a Michelangelo, or a Rembrandt, these would certainly be better worth one's study than the hosts of other originals of the time. Download or read book Images in Mind written by Deborah Steiner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists.

Book Exhibition of Ancient Greek Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exhibition of Ancient Greek Art Classic Reprint written by Burlington Fine Arts Club and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Ancient Greek Art Greek as if it had been found on the Athenian Akropolis, and that the Etruscan vases found on Etruscan and Italian soil are mainly Attic is now a matter of ancient history. May not the same be the case to a certain extent with the numerous bronzes which are labelled Etruscan because of their provenance? If it be urged that the finds on the soil of Greece proper have not - as was in variably the case with the vases - always yielded bronzes similar in subject and character to those from Etruria, it may again be asked whether certain classes of objects were not made in Athens for export only, to meet the taste and demand of foreign clients? In the majority of cases it, is futile to pronounce definitely on artistic as opposed to local provenance, so long as many classical sites, in Asia Minor in particular, remain unexcavated and unex plored. The artistic predominance of Attica and Athens becomes clearer daily. We have seen within the last ten or fifteen years the Northern Greek School of Brunn and the famous Aeginetan School disappear with the recognition that Athens had produced the same artistic phenomena and was the parent of them all. In the same way it will doubtless come to pass that many objects, though found in Etruria and put to Etruscan usage, prove to be Greek, and perhaps Attic in their origin. Meanwhile, it has seemed wise and even scientific to admit side by Side with works of art (in this case mainly bronzes and a few terra-cottas, since vases are happily no longer in question) found in Greece or in the avowedly Greek colonies of Asia Minor, Egypt, and Magna Graecia, a number of the so - called Etruscan bronzes, provided always that these bore unmistakable traces of direct or indirect Greek influence.
