Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Art on Greek Soil The Greeks have ardent aspirations that no disappointments have been able to quench, and "their very vanity is towards intellectual progress." The spark of Greek intelligence yet glows. They expect to be a nation, and are preparing for it. Education has had a development that could not be the case in a dull people. Knowledge is the Greek's passion. Education was broached, among others, by the patriot Admantius Korais, who, at the beginning of the century, as did also the poet Rangabe, began to write and teach of the need of education to prepare the people, sunk as they were in semi-barbarism under four hundred years of Turkish misrule, for liberty. He thought that the remodeling of the nation was no hasty work but required the thoroughly invigorating power of education, and that national enlightenment must precede national regeneration. He was a reformer of the Greek language, and was born of Greek parents in Smyrna 1748, dying in 1833. He insisted on the union of literature with science in education, and especially the study of Homer, as an influence to raise the popular mind, and from him and those like him came that extraordinary impulse from which sprang the Hetairias (Literary Societies) and the great multitude of schools all over Greece. In addition to the University and Polytechnic School at Athens, there is, throughout all the provinces, what may be called a graded system, consisting of the elementary or demotic schools, the Hellenic or grammar schools, and the gymnasia, which resemble the French lycees. Book An Introduction to Greek Art

Download or read book An Introduction to Greek Art written by Susan Woodford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four centuries between the composition of the Homeric epics and the conquests of Alexander the Great witnessed an immensely creative period in Greek art, one full of experimentation and innovation. But time has taken its toll; damaged statues have lost their colour and wall paintings have been totally destroyed. And yet sympathetic study of surviving sculpture and of drawing on vases can give extraordinary insight into and appreciation of these once brilliant works This book, designed originally for students, introduces the reader to Greek sculpture and vase painting in the critical period from the eighth to the fourth centuries BC. The works discussed are generously illustrated and lucidly analysed to give a vivid picture of the splendor of Greek art. The up-dated second edition includes a new chapter examining art in Greek society, a timeline to help relate artistic development to historical events, an explanation of how dates BC are arrived at, a brief overview of Greek temple plans and a further reading list of recent books. This clear, approachable and rigorous introduction makes the beauty of Greek art more readily accessible and comprehensible, balancing description with interpretation and illustration, and is an invaluable tool to help develop insight, appreciation and comprehension.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Ancient Greek Art Greek as if it had been found on the Athenian Akropolis, and that the Etruscan vases found on Etruscan and Italian soil are mainly Attic is now a matter of ancient history. May not the same be the case to a certain extent with the numerous bronzes which are labelled Etruscan because of their provenance? If it be urged that the finds on the soil of Greece proper have not - as was in variably the case with the vases - always yielded bronzes similar in subject and character to those from Etruria, it may again be asked whether certain classes of objects were not made in Athens for export only, to meet the taste and demand of foreign clients? In the majority of cases it, is futile to pronounce definitely on artistic as opposed to local provenance, so long as many classical sites, in Asia Minor in particular, remain unexcavated and unex plored. The artistic predominance of Attica and Athens becomes clearer daily. We have seen within the last ten or fifteen years the Northern Greek School of Brunn and the famous Aeginetan School disappear with the recognition that Athens had produced the same artistic phenomena and was the parent of them all. In the same way it will doubtless come to pass that many objects, though found in Etruria and put to Etruscan usage, prove to be Greek, and perhaps Attic in their origin. Meanwhile, it has seemed wise and even scientific to admit side by Side with works of art (in this case mainly bronzes and a few terra-cottas, since vases are happily no longer in question) found in Greece or in the avowedly Greek colonies of Asia Minor, Egypt, and Magna Graecia, a number of the so - called Etruscan bronzes, provided always that these bore unmistakable traces of direct or indirect Greek influence. Book excerpt: Ancient Greece is characterized by a vision of reality in which a pre-eminent human type is defined in opposition to non-ideal 'others'. The social structure of democratic Athens privileged male citizens, while marginalizing women, resident aliens, and slaves. Across a broad spectrum of classical Greek imagery, this anthology provides an investigation of this 'otherness'. Their methodologies ranging from traditional to avant-garde, an international cast of authors develops a nuanced picture of 'otherness', the visual criteria that denote it, and its social and political functions in regard to gender, class, and ethnicity.

Book excerpt: Greek art, at the very moment that it was breaking up in depth, was scattering over the whole material surface of Hellenic antiquity. After the movement of concentration that had brought to Athens all the forces of Hellenism, a movement of dispersal began, which was to carry from Athens to southern Italy, to Sicily, to Cyrenaica, Egypt, the Islands, and Asia Minor the passion and, unfortunately, the mania, for beautiful things—in default of creative genius. Dilettantism and the diffusion of taste multiply and at the same time weaken talent. It is the Hellenistic period, perhaps the richest in artists and in works of art that history has to show, but possibly, also, one of the poorest in power of emotion. The ideal of the Greek is wisdom. He also has a strong feeling for what is just, but what is beautiful and what is true is to the same degree the object of his passion. He finds in each of these ideas the echoes of the other two, and completes, tempers, and broadens each one through the others. Phidias is in Pythagoras, and Socrates is in Phidias. The “Greek miracle” was necessary. The whole ancient world had prepared, had willed its coming. During the fruitful silence when the Dorians were “accumulating within themselves the strength of their soil, Egypt and Assyria kept their lead. But they were discouraged and stricken by the cold of age. They were to become the initiators of the Hellenic Renaissance, as they had been the guides for the childhood of the peoples of the Archipelago. Greek Art, the perfume of the Greek soul, is preserved until our time, through Pompeii.
