Book excerpt: The stench of greed is engulfing all our once-admired institutions. Business bosses pocket millions for even the most dismal performance. Bureaucrats pay themselves eye-watering amounts, while wasting billions of our money. Multimillionaire bankers lie, steal our money, rig interest rates and wreck our banks. Politicians and peers fiddle even more from their expenses than before the expenses scandal broke.Everything that once made Britain admired in the world - our sense of fair play, our decency, our tolerance, our democracy - has been cynically trampled in the mud by our self-serving, grasping ruling elites. And while our masters loot ever more of our money for themselves, they preach to us about the need for austerity, cutbacks and sacrifices.Greed Unlimited exposes how our voracious, selfish elites have made fools of us all and looks at how we can fight back against the rapacity of those who have so much power over us.

Book Everyday Greed Analysis and Appraisal

Download or read book Everyday Greed Analysis and Appraisal written by Michael S. Pritchard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines how greed should be understood and appraised. Roundly condemned by virtually all religions, greed receives mixed appraisals in the domains of business and economics. The volume examines these mixed appraisals and how they fare in light of their implications for greed in our everyday world. Greed in children is uniformly criticized by parents, other adults, and even children’s peers. However, in adulthood, greed is commended by some as essential to profit-seeking in business and for offering the greatest promise in promoting economic prosperity for everyone. Those who advocate a more permissive position on greed in the adult world typically concede that some constraints on greed are needed. However, the supporting literature offers little analysis of what greed is (as distinct from, for example, the effort to meet modest needs, or the pursuit of ordinary self-interested ends). It offers little clarification of what sorts of constraints on greed are needed. Nor is careful attention given to difficulties children might have in making a transition without moral loss from regarding greed as inappropriate to its later qualified acceptance. Through a secular approach, this book attempts to make significant inroads in remedying these shortcomings.

Download or read book God s Gold written by Skip Worden and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Worden traces the historical shift through the centuries of how Christian thinkers have assumed profit-seeking and wealth are related to the sin of greed. For centuries, the dominant view was that making and accumulating money instantiates the presence of greed. The uncoupling of greed from its assumed external manifestations began to take hold with Aquinas and was complete a century before the Protestant Reformation and its famed work ethic. Rather than viewing the Reformation as pro-wealth, Worden characterizes the reformers broadly as applying the brakes to various degrees in hopes that Christianity would not lapse into accepting greed. In the final chapter, Worden proffers an explanation to account for the shift from the anti- to pro-wealth position. He examines the core of Christian theology and finds a very subtle pro-wealth bias, and provides two remedies.

Book Greed and Injustice in Classical Athens

Download or read book Greed and Injustice in Classical Athens written by Ryan K. Balot and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and rewarding combination of intellectual and political history, Ryan Balot offers a thorough historical and sociological interpretation of classical Athens centered on the notion of greed. Integrating ancient philosophy, poetry, and history, and drawing on modern political thought, the author demonstrates that the Athenian discourse on greed was an essential component of Greek social development and political history. Over time, the Athenians developed sophisticated psychological and political accounts of acquisitiveness and a correspondingly rich vocabulary to describe and condemn it. Greed figures repeatedly as an object of criticism in authors as diverse as Solon, Thucydides, and Plato--all of whom addressed the social disruptions caused by it, as well as the inadequacy of lives focused on it. Because of its ethical significance, greed surfaced frequently in theoretical debates about democracy and oligarchy. Ultimately, critiques of greed--particularly the charge that it is unjust--were built into the robust accounts of justice formulated by many philosophers, including Plato and Aristotle. Such critiques of greed both reflected and were inextricably knitted into economic history and political events, including the coups of 411 and 404 B.C. Balot contrasts ancient Greek thought on distributive justice with later Western traditions, with implications for political and economic history well beyond the classical period. Because the belief that greed is good holds a dominant position in modern justifications of capitalism, this study provides a deep historical context within which such justifications can be reexamined and, perhaps, found wanting.

Book excerpt: A rich exploration of the extraordinary life and work of celebrated architect Yasmeen Lari, winner of the 2023 RIBA Royal Gold Medal. After more than three decades as a renowned global architect, Yasmeen Lari, the first woman to open her own architecture firm in Pakistan in 1964, developed Zero Carbon Architecture, which unites ecological and social justice. This volume, edited by Angelika Fitz, Elke Krasny, and Marvi Mazhar, presents Lari’s trajectory from exemplary modernist to zero carbon revolutionary, with a focus on her remarkable contributions to the global architectural movement to decarbonize and decolonize. The book includes extensive photographs, drawings, and plans from Lari’s archive, most of which have not previously been shown or published. Lari’s architectural thinking and activism have always gone beyond the quest for a singular built solution. Rather, she strategically plans systemic approaches and solutions, be it for housing, a heritage foundation, or zero-carbon shelters with communities at risk. Original essays from diverse international contributors contextualize Lari’s work; investigate architecture and the postimperial, postcolonial, and postpartition condition; and examine the intersections of architecture and human rights, climate change, decolonization, gender, care, activism, and vernacular innovation. More than a tribute to Yasmeen Lari’s extraordinary career, this volume brings her legacy forward and shows how to create change today. Book Plato and the Socratic Dialogue

Download or read book Plato and the Socratic Dialogue written by Charles H. Kahn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-09 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new interpretation of Plato's early and middle dialogues as the expression of a unified philosophical vision. Whereas the traditional view sees the dialogues as marking successive stages in Plato's philosophical development, we may more legitimately read them as reflecting an artistic plan for the gradual, indirect and partial exposition of Platonic philosophy. The magnificent literary achievement of the dialogues can be fully appreciated only from the viewpoint of a unitarian reading of the philosophical content.

Book Alternative Political Economy Models of Transition

Download or read book Alternative Political Economy Models of Transition written by John Marangos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of centrally administered socialism in Russia and Eastern Europe resulted in what is commonly referred to as the transition problem: the transformation from a centrally administered socialist economic system to one that is market-based. Economic science has been faced with the challenge of developing an appropriate body of analysis, advice, and direction to help other nations that may be undergoing this process. In this volume, John Marangos adopts a political economy approach that yields alternative models of transition. The volume develops transition models from what Marangos defines as the primary elements of six variables: (1) economic analysis; (2) definitions of the Good Society; (3) speed of transition; (4) political structure; (5) ideological structure; and (6) initial conditions. The models developed include: the shock therapy model, the neoclassical gradualist model of transition, the post Keynesian model, the pluralistic market, the socialist model, and the non-pluralistic market socialist model. After identifying the primary elements of each transition model, Marangos considers the elements of each model with respect to the desirable reforms. An essential element of the transition process is not only to identify the necessary reforms but also a sequence in which the reforms should be introduced. For each transition model developed in this book, a set of primary and secondary elements were provided in conjunction with a sequence of reforms. Analyzing the transition problem from a political economy perspective, Marangos shows that it is possible to have inconsistencies within each transition model and between transition models yet be able to identify the potential for implementation and maintenance of necessary reforms each model recommends. This volume contributes to the understanding of the process of transition, with the objective of identifying an optimal model of transition.
