Book excerpt: Ingrained in Natalie Crane since childhood was the habit of planning. Her father had often reminded her to plan how she wanted her life to be and then follow through. She had paid attention and done well for herself. She had graduated from a prestigious ivy league law school, landed a lucrative job with a well known law firm, written a best selling nonfiction book, and was in a committed relationship with Alan Kimball, a highly successful computer software consultant. Unfortunately, Natalie's world is crushed when Alan confesses that he has impregnated his ex wife Marlene. Her pride and self-confidence, particularly as a woman, and what she considered as a strong ability in judging character is shot. She breaks up with Alan and throws herself into her work, vowing to take a rest from the dating scene for awhile. A special nursing home abuse case in Macon, Georgia is assigned to Natalie and she finds that she will be working closely with Jack Coogan, her firm's chief private investigator. Jack is tall and handsome with a killer body. Her friend Vera urges her to forget Alan, move on with her life, and find somebody else. She learns that Natalie will be working with Jack, a man that several of her friends lusts after. She suggests that Jack would be a good candidate to make her feel like a woman again as long as she's careful not to have any expectations about the relationship. Fearful that Jack is just a womanizer, Natalie dismisses Vera's advice. But while in Macon working on the case, she gets to know Jack and after a productive work day and an intimate dinner, she succumbs to Vera's advice and winds up in Jack's hotel room. Although she and Jack agree that neither has any expectations of the other, Natalie discovers that she has feelings for Jack. Later, as they spend another passionate night together, she shares those feelings with Jack and finds that he has feelings for her, as well. Although, unbeknownst to her he has been in love with her since they first met over a year ago. In the midst of culminating the evidence to present at a meeting on Friday, Natalie gets a telephone call from Vera who informs her that Alan's ex wife has been killed accidentally in a struggle over a gun with her boyfriend Edgar. On her deathbed she confesses to Alan that the baby is not his but Edgar's. Knowing Natalie to be a woman of high principles, Jack fears that her empathy for Alan could mean that she might forgive Alan and take him back. Could his short relationship with Natalie compete with the history that Alan has had with her?

Book A Guide For The Greedy By A Greedy Woman

Download or read book A Guide For The Greedy By A Greedy Woman written by Elizabeth Robins Pennell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is surely the most extraordinary book on food and eating ever published in the English language. Miss Pennell, who was a correspondent for the Pall Mall Gazette at the height of its amusement and fashionability, was obviously the inspiration of the ‘Two Fat Ladies’. Writing about good food with good writing has never been done so successfully. Beginning with an essay on the virtue of gluttony it traverses past breakfast, sandwiches, dinner, supper, portage, soups, sole, oysters, partridge, salads and savouries, coming sadly to an all too soon a stop at cheese and coffee. Oh, but not forgetting a skirmish with the vegetables. This edition first published in 2005. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

Book Roman Love Elegy and the Eros of Empire

Download or read book Roman Love Elegy and the Eros of Empire written by Phebe Lowell Bowditch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Roman love elegy from postcolonial perspectives, arguing that the tropes, conventions, and discourses of the Augustan genre serve to reinforce the imperial identity of its elite, metropolitan audience. Love elegy presents the phenomena and discourses of Roman imperialism—in terms of visual spectacle (the military triumph), literary genre (epic in relation to elegy), material culture (art and luxury goods), and geographic space—as intersecting with ancient norms of gender and sexuality in a way that reinforces Rome’s dominance in the Mediterranean. The introductory chapter lays out the postcolonial frame, drawing from the work of Edward Said among other theorists, and situates love elegy in relation to Roman Hellenism and the varied Roman responses to Greece and its cultural influences. Four of the six subsequent chapters focus on the rhetorical ambivalence that characterizes love elegy’s treatment of Greek influence: the representation of the domina or mistress as simultaneously a figure for ‘captive Greece’ and a trope for Roman imperialism; the motif of the elegiac triumph, with varying figures playing the triumphator, as suggestive of Greco-Roman cultural rivalry; Rome’s competing visions of an Attic and an Asiatic Hellenism. The second and the final chapter focus on the figures of Osiris and Isis, respectively, as emblematic of Rome’s colonialist and ambivalent representation of Egypt, with the conclusion offering a deconstructive reading of elegy’s rhetoric of orientalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and The Frozen River comes a “genuinely surprising whodunit” (USA Today) that tantalizingly reimagines a scandalous murder mystery that rocked the nation. One summer night in 1930, Judge Joseph Crater steps into a New York City cab and is never heard from again. Behind this great man are three women, each with her own tale to tell: Stella, his fashionable wife, the picture of propriety; Maria, their steadfast maid, indebted to the judge; and Ritzi, his showgirl mistress, willing to seize any chance to break out of the chorus line. As the twisted truth emerges, Ariel Lawhon’s wickedly entertaining debut mystery transports us into the smoky jazz clubs, the seedy backstage dressing rooms, and the shadowy streets beneath the Art Deco skyline. Don't miss Ariel Lawhon's new book, The Frozen River!

Book excerpt: From the author of A Rose for the Crown and Daughter of York comes another engrossing historical novel of the York family in the Wars of the Roses, telling the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the final and favorite mistress of Edward IV. Jane Lambert, the quick-witted and alluring daughter of a silk merchant, is twenty-two and still unmarried. When Jane’s father finally finds her a match, she’s married off to the dull, older silk merchant William Shore. Marriage doesn’t stop Jane from flirtation, however, and when the king’s chamberlain, Will Hastings, comes to her husband’s shop, Will knows King Edward will find her irresistible. Edward IV has everything: power, majestic bearing, superior military leadership, a sensual nature, and charisma. And with Jane as his mistress, he also finds true happiness. But when his hedonistic tendencies get in the way of being the strong leader England needs, his life, as well as those of Jane and Will Hastings, hangs in the balance. Jane must rely on her talents to survive as the new monarch, Richard III, bent on reforming his brother’s licentious court, ascends the throne. This dramatic tale has been an inspiration to poets and playwrights for five hundred years, and, as told through the unique perspective of a woman plucked from obscurity and thrust into a life of notoriety, Royal Mistress is sure to enthrall today’s historical fiction lovers as well.
