Book Surrealism in Greece

Download or read book Surrealism in Greece written by Nikos Stabakis and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades between the two World Wars, Greek writers and artists adopted surrealism both as an avant-garde means of overturning the stifling traditions of their classical heritage and also as a way of responding to the extremely unstable political situation in their country. Despite producing much first-rate work throughout the rest of the twentieth century, Greek surrealists have not been widely read outside of Greece. This volume seeks to remedy that omission by offering authoritative translations of the major works of the most important Greek surrealist writers. Nikos Stabakis groups the Greek surrealists into three generations: the founders (such as Andreas Embirikos, Nikos Engonopoulos, and Nicolas Calas), the second generation, and the Pali Group, which formed around the magazine Pali. For each generation, he provides a very helpful introduction to the themes and concerns that animate their work, as well as concise biographies of each writer. Stabakis anthologizes translations of all the key surrealist works of each generation—poetry, prose, letters, and other documents—as well as a selection of rarer texts. His introduction to the volume places Greek surrealism within the context of the international movement, showing how Greek writers and artists used surrealism to express their own cultural and political realities.

Book Building Tomorrow s Leaders Today

Download or read book Building Tomorrow s Leaders Today written by Michael A. Genovese and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on leadership -- what it is, how it works, and how complex, multi-layered and multi-dimensional it is -- and how it will change in the years ahead. If we are to build tomorrow’s leaders today, we need to anticipate what skills, temperaments, and specific competencies will be valuable as we face future needs. If the past is a predictor of the future, the world of tomorrow will be characterized by rapid change, new technology, greater diversity, increased globalization, and the need for lifelong learning. As a political scientist and presidential scholar, Michael Genovese incorporates a wide range of disciplinary perspectives and research on leadership in this book to give students, practitioners, and leadership scholars a welcome and engaging look to the future.

Download or read book Greece the Decade of War written by David Brewer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, acclaimed history David Brewer investigates explores 1940s Greece -- one of the most tumultuous decades in Greece's modern history. Beginning in 1941, the occupation of Greece by Germany was intensely brutal: children starved on the streets of Athens; the Jewish population was decimated in the Holocaust; heroic acts of resistance were met with vicious reprisals. When Greece was finally freed from Nazi rule in 1944, the fractured and embittered nation became engulfed in civil war, as conflict flared between the British and American-sponsored government and communist-led rebels. In Greece, The Decade of War, Brewer expertly analyses these events and in doing so provides a compelling military and political history.

Book Andros Odyssey the Return

Download or read book Andros Odyssey the Return written by Stavros Boinodirs PhD and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Andros Odyssey refugees in Eastern Macedonia managed to survive a series of catastrophes, a much bigger threat appears. Greece enters into World War II. Anthony leaves his wife and joins other poorly equipped Greeks at the front. Greece had to fight four enemies at once: Albania, Italy, Bulgaria and Germany. After the Greek capitulation, Eastern Macedonia was occupied by Bulgarians, who wanted to make sure that no Greek claim on that land persisted after the war. This brought about genocidal massacres of all Greek population in the area. The Bulgarian ambitions were also paralleled by Hitlers Final Solution, regarding the Jewish presence in Greece. As the couple and the people around them struggle to survive this murderous environment, they face starvation, greed, language problems, misinformation, illness, treason, and a variety of other factors. Worse yet, following the capitulation of Germany, Greece is plagued by a new catastrophe, a civil war between communist and nationalist factions that lead to the Cold War. As a result, the Greeks sacrifice proportionally the highest part (almost 10%) of their population during this period of War II. It was the earlier part of this noted sacrifice that gave crucial time to the Russians to muster their strength for a decisive WWII victory against the Germans. The end of the civil war finds Anthony and Elisabeth with two sons, barely able to feed themselves. The oldest son, after reaching adulthood leaves for Germany in search of work. The younger one, after finishing high school, and not being able to afford advanced schooling in Greece leaves for the United States, to help his great uncle, Pandel Mayo in exchange for college tuition. He happens to be the author of this book.
