The evolution of these brave firefighting groups is richly chronicled in Greater Hartford Firefighting.

Book Hard Climb Up the Ladder

Download or read book Hard Climb Up the Ladder written by Rubin Tendai and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John Stewart joined the Hartford Fire Department in 1952 he was only the seventh African-American firefighter in the department's 150-year history. He made the grand total of $48.50 a week. Stewart faced deep-seated institutional racism, unofficial but widespread segregation tactics, and resentment. For years he was passed over for promotions despite his sterling service. Stewart persevered and eventually the promotions came. He became the first black officer in the department, and, in 1980, became Hartford, Connecticut's first African-American fire chief. Hard Climb up the Ladder chronicles Chief Stewart's determination and eventual success, from his early years through decades of service to his city. In addition to his firefighting career, Stewart became an elected city council official to help the poor and racial minorities of Hartford access city services. An inspiration to those who know him, Chief John B. Stewart Jr. (ret.) proves hard work and perseverance can overcome bigotry and the status quo.

Book excerpt: Through firsthand accounts, interviews with survivors and a gripping collection of vintage photographs, author Michael Skidgell attempts to make sense of one of Hartford's worst tragedies. Almost 7,000 fans eagerly packed into the Ringling Brothers big top on July 6, 1944. With a single careless act, an afternoon at the "Greatest Show on Earth" quickly became one of terror and tragedy as the paraffin-coated circus tent caught fire. Panicked crowds rushed for the few exits, but in minutes, the tent collapsed on those still struggling to escape below. A total of 168 lives were lost, many of them children, with many more injured and forever scarred by the events. Hartford and the surrounding communities reeled in the aftermath as investigators searched for the source of the fire and the responsible parties.
