Book I Will Survive

Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Book The Politics Of Suffering

Download or read book The Politics Of Suffering written by Peter Sutton and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Incandescent, emotional, tragic and challenging' - Marcia Langton In this groundbreaking book, Peter Sutton asks why, after three decades of liberal thinking, has the suffering and grief in so many Aboriginal communities become worse? The picture Sutton presents is tragic. He marshals shocking evidence against the failures of the past, and argues provocatively that three decades of liberal consensus on Aboriginal issues has collapsed. Sutton is a leading Australian anthropologist who has lived and worked closely with Aboriginal communities. He combines clear-eyed, original observation with deep emotional engagement. The Politics of Suffering cuts through the cant and offers fresh insight and hope for a new era in Indigenous politics.

Book Native Title in Australia

Download or read book Native Title in Australia written by Peter Sutton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native title has often been one of the most controversial political, legal and indeed moral issues in Australia. Ever since the High Court's Mabo decision of 1992, the attempt to understand and adapt native title to different contexts and claims has been an ongoing concern for that broad range of people involved with claims. In this book, originally published in 2003, Peter Sutton sets out fundamental anthropological issues to do with customary rights, kinship, identity, spirituality and so on that are relevant for lawyers and others working on title claims. Sutton offers a critical discussion of anthropological findings in the field of Aboriginal traditional interests in land and waters, focusing on the kinds of customary rights that are 'held' in Aboriginal 'countries', the types of groups whose members have been found to enjoy those rights, and how such groups have fared over the last 200 years of Australian history.

Book Lost Waters

  • Author : Erica Nathan
  • Publisher : Melbourne University
  • Release : 2007-01-01

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Lost Waters written by Erica Nathan and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Waters charts the history since white settlement of one waterscape, where the Lal Lal Creek enters the West Moorabool branch of the Moorabool River near Ballarat in the central highlands of western Victoria. It is a water supply catchment area, where water has been gathered and channeled, waterways reconfigured and connections weakened. In bringing a historical rather than scientific perspective to the issue, Erica Nathan considers what is often lost in the contemporary politics of water re-allocation: what water means to people. She uncovers the knowledge, memory and experience of petitions, picnics, photos and paintings, special trees and boulders, gold diggings, water hole disputes, allocation debates, saw milling, frontage tensions, swimming and fishing that connect people to place. Lost Waters is a history of one waterscape, but with implications that extend far beyond the one locality. It shows how an understanding of the issues of water and water management must be based on the experience of people as well as debates over resource allocation.
