Book The Quest for the America s Cup Sailing to Victory

Download or read book The Quest for the America s Cup Sailing to Victory written by Richard V. Simpson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over one hundred and fifty years, the America's Cup has been the premier prize as yachtsmen have been pitted against sailors from around the world in an effort to win this prestigious race. The race takes its name from the champion schooner America, which was created due in large part to the efforts of New York Yacht Club founder John Cox Stevens. Author Richard V. Simpson sheds new light on long-forgotten stories of the early quests for the coveted Cup. Among the notable yachtsmen profiled are Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, who earned a special award for being the race's best loser, and Ted Hood, who owned a sail-making company that developed the Dacron cloth from which the twelve-meter sails were cut. This history comes to life with exciting descriptions of the yachts, the races and the colorful personalities of those who longed to capture the greatest prize in yacht racing.

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Atlantic written by Scott Cookman and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advance praise for ATLANTIC "Atlantic is a stirring story that illuminates a magical period in our maritime history. Scott Cookman weaves the compelling plot in a manner that will fascinate both the landlubber and the sailor alike. The schooner Atlantic's transatlantic racing record has remained unbeaten for nearly a century-and the story behind the race makes that achievement even more impressive. Cookman has done his homework well and unfolds that story page by page . . . the reader can just about feel the icy lash of a North Atlantic swell crashing aboard as the massive sailing craft are driven toward their destination by men and women whose dreams and goals (and even the pride of their countries) hang in the balance." -Peter Isler, America's Cup veteran, author of the bestselling Sailing for Dummies, and Editor at Large for Sailing World "Outstanding. Cookman is equally adept at depicting the gut-wrenching tension of ocean racing; the politics, intrigues, and skullduggery of billionaires, society snobs, and sailors who make Captain Ahab seem the model of restraint; and a gilded, vanished era under the gathering storm clouds of war." -Neil Hanson, author of The Custom of the Sea "In 1905, the key to unlocking America's economic potential was swift travel across the Atlantic. Scott Cookman recounts in meticulous detail the fanatical race for maritime supremacy. Scions and captains of industry took the challenge by racing across the ocean." -Gary Jobson, America's Cup--winning tactician on Ted Turner's Courageous (1977) and ESPN sailing analyst "Anyone who has ever been to sea, or dreamed of a sailing adventure, will be captivated by this extraordinary seafaring story. It is a perfect balance of history, intrigue, and period personalities that will make your palms sweat as you rush headlong through storm and fog to the finish." -Rockwell B. Harwood, Commodore, Stamford Yacht Club (1999--2001)

Book Gordon Bennett and the First Yacht Race Across the Atlantic

Download or read book Gordon Bennett and the First Yacht Race Across the Atlantic written by Sam Jefferson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1866 transatlantic yacht race was a match that saw three yachts battle their way across the Atlantic in the dead of winter in pursuit of a $90,000 prize. Six men died in the brutal and close-fought contest, and the event changed the perception of yachting from a slightly effete gentlemen's pursuit into something altogether more rugged and adventurous. The race also symbolized the beginning of America's 'gilded age', with its associated obscene wealth and largesse (the $90,000 prize put up by the three contestants is about $15 million in today's money), as well as the thawing of relations between the US and UK. The narrative focuses on the victorious yacht Henrietta and her owner James Gordon Bennett. Bennett was the son of the multimillionaire proprietor of the New York Herald, and a notorious playboy. His infamous stunts included driving his carriage through the streets of New York naked, tipping a railway porter $30,000, and turning up at his own engagement party blind drunk and mistaking the fire for a urinal, which led to the coining of the phrase 'Gordon Bennett!'. However, Bennett was also a serious yachtsman and had served with distinction during the civil war aboard Henrietta, and he was the only owner to be aboard his own boat during the race. Other characters include Bennett's captain Samuel Samuels (legendary clipper skipper, ex-convict and occasional vaudeville actor), financier Leonard Jerome, aboard Henrietta as race invigilator (he also happened to be grandfather to Winston Churchill) and Stephen Fisk, a journalist so desperate to cover the race that he evaded a summons to appear as a witness in court and instead smuggled himself aboard Henrietta in a crate of champagne. Using the framework of the race to discuss the various historical themes, there's ample drama, and the diverse and eccentric range of characters ensure that this is a book laced with plenty of human interest, scandal and adventure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavish, full-color chronicle of the most grueling single-handed yacht races in the world Ever since Joshua Slocum circumnavigated the globe in 1895-98, sailors have dreamed of taking to the high seas alone. Many have devoted their lives to the dream; some have given their lives. With gorgeous, full-color photography and dramatic prose, Sailing Solo pays homage to the world's greatest sailors as it explores every major single-handed race, from the pioneering Ostar to the grueling Figaro, to the ultimate of all solo competitions, the Vendee Globe, in which sailors surf down40-foot waves at speeds in excess of 20knots, thousands of miles from any help. Single-handed racing has never been more popular. As many as 200,000 people braved winter weather to witness Ellen Macarthur's completion of the Vendee Globe in 2001. The author, a veteran single hander, traces the history of each race, introducing the skippers and the incredible boats they fly solo--offering readers a unique and awe inspiring glimpse into what makes sailors tackle that ultimate of all challenges: sailing alone.

Book Team Spirit

Download or read book Team Spirit written by Brendan Hall and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Team Spirit is a gripping account of a race on the edge, and a young skipper's determined journey to victory. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is the ultimate long distance challenge - a 35,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe, contested by amateur crews in identical racing yachts - and the winners are those who keep their focus the longest. The 2010 winner was 28-year-old Brendan Hall and his crew in Spirit of Australia. Although Brendan was the youngest and least experienced skipper in the race, the win was no accident - it was the culmination of years of training, skilled navigation and a leadership style way beyond his years.
