Book Great Texts of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Texts of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by J. G. Greenhough and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Texts of the New Testament There are secrets hidden in every tiny ower and grain of sand, in every throbbing nerve and aching heart, which our keenest wisdom cannot discover. Every tear is a profound mystery, every Sigh is a world of unimaginable things. No one can tell us why we laugh or why we cry. NO one can read his brother's mind or understand his own. He who has studied human nature most closely has but touched the Surface of it. Those who can tell us most about man can only prove that he is fearfully and wonder fully made. Men who have been investigating for a lifetime the sins, sorrows, and diseases of the World, find that these are still the everlasting riddle; and he whose faith has given him the clearest vision of God, knows that these are but a portion of His ways, and the thunders of His power none can understand. The highest philosophy still prattles and stammers and guesses like a child, and we all have to kneel down humbly declaring that our wisdom is but dim eyed folly, and repeating these words of Paul: Now we see through a glass, darkly: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as 1 am known. Book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament Today Arouse suspicions of its message than those attempts to conceal or explain away the facts of its origin. The time has surely come when we should try to exchange the old attitude to scripture for one that will be more consistent with the results of modern enquiry. These results, it may be granted, are often one-sided, and in every matter of detail are Open to revision. Those who are best acquainted with them will be the first to admit that they are by no means final. But the main conclu sions at which modern scholars have arrived can no longer be questioned, and have to be taken into account in our estimate of the book. If it is to exercise its proper influence on the new age it must be presented as it really is, not as an ignorant piety has imagined it. The aim of the following chapters is to help, in some small way, towards the new presentation. The book of the primitive church was composed so long ago, out of so many strange elements, that it might seem to have nothing but a historical interest for the mind of our time. Yet it has proved itself, - and never more so than in these changeful days, - to be the most living of all books. Its conceptions of man's needs and duties, of his relation to God and to his fellow-men, have stood every test, and are likely to be enduring. How is it that the ancient book has this permanent value? It was formerly assumed that the riddle could only be answered by a theory of direct inspiration; but such a theory is no longer possible, nor is it necessary. Nothing essen tial is lost to the New Testament when we allow for the historical process whereby it came into being. Its permanent message becomes in many ways more intel ligible, and can be applied more closely to actual needs and circumstances. In any case, the book must be understood in the light of modern knowledge before it can fully appeal to the modern world. In these days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Text of the New Testament One of the most necessary parts of the investigations of historians is to criticise the documents on which their researches are based, in order to be certain that the text which they are using really represents the original writing of the author. This criticism is usually known as Textual criticism, for the obvious reason that it deals with the test as opposed to the subject-matter. It is less commonly termed the Lower as Opposed to the Higher criticism, which deals not with the text as written by the author or editor of the document in question, but with the sources and methods used by him in making the text. Thus Higher criticism approaches the subject at a point higher 11 the stream of its existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Texts of the Bible: St. Luke And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a. Manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. - Luke ii. 7. There are not many texts in the Bible with which Christians, from the highest to the lowest, from the very aged to the young child who can but just speak, are more familiar than they are with this. We learn more or less about our Lord's cradle almost as soon as we are out of our own cradles. That one part of the gospel history we know, even when the rest has quite slipped out of our minds. Christ's mother and Joseph had been living at their home at Nazareth when, according to St. Luke's Gospel, orders were given for one of those censuses, or enrolments of the people, which were sometimes used in ancient days as a basis for the imposition of a poll-tax. In such cases, people were enrolled according to their ancestry and the region from which they originally came and thus it was that Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into J udeea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enrol himself with Mary who was betrothed to him, being great with child. The little town - it was no more than what we should calla village - was crowded with people, many of whom had come for the same purpose and claimed the same exalted lineage; the inn or guest-chamber - there was rarely more than one in such small places - was already crowded; this carpenter and his young bride were people of no particular importance and needed no special consideration, still less did the unborn Child; and so, as there was no room for them among the human guests, they had to find shelter in the stable hard by, among the beasts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the New Testament The perfection of modern printing and the beauty and compactness of our present-day books undoubtedly cause certain loss to the reader of the New Testament. It is charming and convenient to have that greatest of all literature in such compass that one can carry it in a tiny little book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament for Learners The Romans themselves were forbidden by law to go over to a foreign religion but the regulation was seldom enforced. Indeed, the religious condition of the ancient world made it impossible to carry it out; for faith in the national deities was tottering to its fall among Romans and Greeks alike. In fact, it had out-lived itself; and philosophy had powerfully contributed to its overthrow. A deep dissatisfaction made the want of something better keenly felt, and an ever stronger yearning after a purer conception of the nature and the will of the Deity threw many a one into the arms of Judaism, just as it afterwards prepared the way for Christianity. I am sure No merely human mind could bear the strain Of some tremendous sorrows we endure. Art's most ingenious breastworks fail at length, Beat by the mighty billows of the sea; Only the God-formed shores possess the strength To stand before their onslaughts, and not flee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of New Testament Greek The publication of the Revised Version of our English New Testament, in 1881, marked the begin ning of a new interest in Bible study. Since that time not only the English, but the Greek and Hebrew have been studied with a zeal quite new. The sources are being more carefully examined to-day than ever before. Students are becoming more and more awake to the great importance of being able to judge of a certain passage for themselves rather than accepting without doubt or question whatever the authorities say in regard to it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canon and d104 of the New Testament The consideration of the canon and the text of the New Testament forms a preface to the study of what is called intro duction. It is true that these two topics have sometimes of late years been remanded to the close of introduction, have been treated in a somewhat perfunctory way, and have been threatened with exclusion from the field. The earlier habit of joining them together and placing them at the front was much more correct. Now and then they were termed as a whole general introduc tion. The rest of introduction, the criticism of the contents of the books in and for themselves, was then called special introduction. The use of these names does not seem to me to be necessary. The introduction to the study of the New Testament is made up of three criticisms, of the critical treatment of three things. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texts Explained: Or Helps to Understand the New Testament I have called this book Texts flplained, because I could find no title which more simply described the object which I have had in view. The texts are chosen entirely from the New Testament, because the volume would otherwise have been larger than I contemplated. It is needless to say that I have not, in the following pages, attempted to write a continuous commentary, but only to call attention to a large number of verses or passages of which in matters of varying importance the force, the beauty, the correct reading, the exact ren dering, or the deep special significance has often been mistaken, overlooked, or altogether obliterated. That such a book may be most useful I feel no doubt whatever, and there are multitudes, who, by reading it carefully, might gain more from it, a better knowledge of the real meaning of many passages than seems to be common. There is no text here selected for some brief elucidation which does not gain in instructiveness, or interest, when its exact connotation is simply explained. And although, in many instances, our invaluable Revised Version furnishes the right key for the meaning of the text, yet the significance of the changes in the translation often needs to be explained or emphasised, not only to unlearned and ignorant readers, but even to many for whom such explanation might have seemed to be superfluous. That this is really the case became clear to me from the following circumstance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
