Book Great Modern Preachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Modern Preachers Classic Reprint written by Alexander Maclaren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Modern Preachers The Baptist Church has been able to boast of many eminent preachers. It is partly to be accounted for, perhaps, through the intensity of conviction which is generally to be associated with the religious life and opinions of the Baptist people. They have less than other religious sects, taken up with their profession from any Slight preferences which may have been conceived for some interesting phase of truth. What they hold, they hold with the firm grasp of the Whole mind. From the time of their earliest history as a separate and recognised religious community, they have been known for their tenacious reverence for the Opinions which they have professed. Let the fact cover a large Space; it is fair to say that such tenacity of conviction will materially contribute to the production of unusual pulpit power. Far fewer in numbers, they have yet greatly sur passed the Wesleyan Methodist Church in this respect. They have had in their pulpits some of the ablest preachers of this century. Robert Hall has, perhaps, had no equal in it in respect of What may be called, with a Special signification, pulpit eloquence. The whole religious world has heard of him; and to any person who has ever had the slightest conception of the relation of this eloquent man to the preaching of his time, it is a pleasure to meet with any one who used to listen to his sermons in the towns which are associated with his memory. He was a remarkable pulpit phenomenon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Modern Preachers The chapters of this volume were originally lectures to divinity students. I have ventured to present them in revised and expanded form to the general public, because I think that the preachers of whose personalities and products I have here attempted a critical estimate have, by their skill and force in presenting the truth, won the right to a special hearing. I have been a careful student of them for many years, and confess a special personal interest in most of them. Some of them are well known. A good deal has been said about them and they have been widely read. It may seem, therefore, to be bringing "coals to Newcastle" to discuss them anew. But some of them are not well known. A volume of Schleiermacher's selected and translated sermons was presented a few years ago to the American public. But I venture the surmise that but few, even among preachers, know this great representative of the German pulpit, either as preacher or as theologian. Newman and Mozley have still a limited circle of readers and admirers, but it might well be enlarged. The "up-to-date" man is not interested in Guthrie or Spurgeon. They have contributed little or nothing to the thought of the church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Representative Modern Preachers

Download or read book Representative Modern Preachers written by Lewis O. Brastow and published by Dickens Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preacher and the Modern Mind May I hold the reader by the button-hole for a moment while I explain to him what to look for and what not to look for in the pages that follow? I am especially desirous that a somewhat pretentious title should not awaken expectations that cannot be fulfilled. First of all, then, these chapters are concerned with the preacher, and with the preacher as preacher, not as scholar or philosopher. It was the purpose of the Founder of this Lecture, as indicated in the Trust Deed executed by him, that it should be delivered with special reference and adaptation to the necessities of the times, and With a view to the benefit of the Candidates who are about to be ordained by the Conference to the Ministry.' This two-fold instruction I have endeavoured to keep steadfastly in View throughout these pages; they are addressed to the preacher, and especially to the young preacher, who feels, and is himself seeking to minister to, the necessities of the times.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Throne of Eloquence: Great Preachers, Ancient and Modern Dear Mr. Spurgeon, - In inscribing this volume to you, permit me to say that I am simply fulfilling the affectionately expressed wish of my dear husband. You will perhaps remember that nearly twenty years since he had the pleasure and honour to deliver to your students a series of lectures on the Vocation of the Preacher, which subsequently took shape in a somewhat bulky volume, entitled "Lamps, Pitchers, and Trumpets," the dedication of which you were kind enough to accept. But earlier than this, and some thirty years ago, he published anonymously "The Lamps of the Temple," which you may have seen, and in which an exceedingly appreciative and warmly eulogistic paper on one Charles Haddon Spurgeon, then just emerging into fame, had the honour to present, I believe, the first prescient forecast of his subsequently great and successful career. But, before the "Lamps of the Temple," there was a little volume, the parent of all his succeeding ones on this subject, and which he published under the modest and somewhat pathetic "nom-de-plume" of "L'Agneau Noir." Most people, Whether really religious or not, are conservative enough to go regularly to their church on Sunday, and would feel that they had been defrauded of part of their due exercise if the sermon were omitted. Superlatively happy years have they been to me; for I have often said that no monarch's throne and no presi dential chair is so exalted as a pulpit in which a living preacher presents a living Christ to dying souls. Every minister who reads these columns, and is worthy of his high calling, will doubtless echo the same sentiment. But a vast number of young Christians among 'our readers are raising the question, Ought I to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pastors in the Classics

Download or read book Pastors in the Classics written by Leland Ryken and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of English literature, church ministers have figured prominently in novels, plays, morality tales, and even poetry. Pastors in the Classics is a unique, unprecedented collection of relevant literary masterpieces in which the pastor's experience is a major part of the story. Part 1 is a reader's guide to twelve important classics written over four centuries and covering seven different nationalities. Each chapter not only describes and interprets the work in question, it also highlights a specific feature of pastoral ministry explored in the work. Part 2 is a handbook that defines the canon of literary masterpieces that deal with the pastor's experience, offering reading suggestions for both ministers and lovers of literature. From the familiar (The Canterbury Tales; Cry, the Beloved Country; and The Scarlet Letter) to the lesser-known (Silence, Witch Wood) to the surprising (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), this collection uncovers the good, the bad, and the ugly ways in which pastors have been presented to the reading public for the past half millennium.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Pastor Such is the opportunity on which the writer of these introductory pages seizes, for addressing his appeal to his honoured brethren of every name, and more especially to the clergy of his own church, with the view of carrying on Baxter's great design, and reviving the power of true religion amongst them. May he open his heart in all simplicity? May he at least, after thirty or forty years' observation, sug gest to his younger brethren something which may tend, under the blessing of God, to promote a re turn to primitive zeal and love amongst the clergy? May he be permitted to admonish and rouse his own conscience, Whilst he attempts to excite others? And 0, blessed Spirit of Christ descend Thou upon the writer and the readers of these pages! Vouch safe success! Fulfil thy gracious office, as the comforter of the Church, by touching our hearts, and reviving thy work effectually amongst us! Let thy ministers be open to thy reproofs, and hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches! In the first place, then, your attention, honoured and beloved brethren in Christ, shall be directed to some topics of humiliation; in the next, to some grounds of hope; and, lastly, to several points of duty, as subservient to a revival of pure Christianity amongst us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Pulpit: A Study of Homiletic Sources and Characteristics The title of this volume will readily suggest its object. It is an attempt to interpret the preaching of our day. It undertakes to get back of it, into its sources, to characterize its distinctive peculiarities and to estimate its value. In Representative Modern Preachers, published two years ago, the author invited attention to a few prominent preachers of different schools, as concrete exemplifications of the preaching of the last century. The present volume is more fundamental and comprehensive and may be regarded as supplemental. It would look at the preaching of our day in the light of those chief agencies of the modern world that have powerfully affected it. Influences that were active in the last century and in the century preceding, and that have revolutionized it, are analyzed and classified; qualities that are prominent in it, distinctive of it, and common to it, are summarized; and the field of concrete illustration is greatly enlarged. It is the Protestant pulpit that furnishes the material of our investigation. For it is Protestantism only that in the fullest sense may be said to have, either in theory or in fact, a modern pulpit. The preaching of the Roman Catholic Church is not underestimated, nor its value minimized. It has notable merits of its own and is worthy of careful study. It often reaches a great height of artistic excellence, as well as of moral and spiritual power. But it has no time-spirit It assumes to be superior to modern life. It would dominate the modern world, not be dominated by it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
