Book The Role of the Big Flare Syndrome in Correlations of Solar Energetic Proton Fluxes and Associated Microwave Burst Parameters

Download or read book The Role of the Big Flare Syndrome in Correlations of Solar Energetic Proton Fluxes and Associated Microwave Burst Parameters written by S. W. Kahler and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In previous studies correlating E> 10 MeV proton fluxes and spectra with various associated microwave burst parameters, the resulting high correlations were assumed to reflect a common acceleration process for the protons and the microwave-emitting electrons. We suggest and test an alternative explanation for these correlations, which we term the Big Flare Syndrome (BFS), that states that, statistically, energetic flare phenomena are more intense in larger flares, regardless of the detailed physics. Peak 1-8 A X-ray fluxes, characteristic of the thermal flare, are correlated with peak proton fluxes to derive correlation coefficients characteristics of the BFS. Of all microwave parameters tested for the 1973-1979 period, only the time-integrated flux densities at 8800 and 15400 MHz may be significantly larger than expected form the BFS. We fail to confirm previous results associating peak proton spectra with peak microwave spectral characteristics, thus finding no evidence that peak microwave fluxes are indicative of proton acceleration. We extend this conclusion to peak hard X-ray correlations. The strongly nonlinear relationship deduced between flare energy and proton production also appears invalid.

Book The Ratio of Microwaves to X Rays in Solar Flares

Download or read book The Ratio of Microwaves to X Rays in Solar Flares written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expected ratio of synchrotron microwave radiation to bremsstrahlung X-rays for thick target, thin target, and multithermal solar flare models is calculated. The calculations take into account the variation of the microwave to X-ray ratio with X-ray spectral index. The theoretical results are compared with observed ratios of a sample of 51 solar flares with well known spectral index. From this it is concluded that the nonthermal thick target model with a loop length of and order of 10 to the 9th power cm and a magnetic field of 500 + or - 200 G provides the best fit to the data. The thin target and multithermal models require unreasonably large density or pressure and/or low magnetic field to match the data. Book Contribution of X ray and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation of Solar Flares to Sudden Frequency Deviations

Download or read book Contribution of X ray and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation of Solar Flares to Sudden Frequency Deviations written by Richard Frank Donnelly and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High time and intensity resolution satellite measurements of X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation during solar flares are studied to determine the wavelength dependence of the flare radiation responsible for sudden frequency deviations (SFD). SFD's measure the flare-induced effects in the E and F1 regions of the ionosphere and are in effect like a broadband (1-1030 Å) detector for impulsive flare enhancements. He II 303.8 Å, O V 629.7 Å, H Ly [upsilon] 972.5 Å, C III 977.0 Å, and H Ly [alpha] 1215.7 Å were found to have essentially the same time dependence as the total ionizing radiation producing SFD's, except that they decay faster than the net 1-1030 Å radiation. Flare enhancements of Fe XV 284.1 Å, Fe XVI 335.3 Å, Si XII 499.3 Å. Mg X 625.3 Å, and Ne VIII 770.4 Å, which are normally coronal lines, appear to have a much slower time dependence than the radiation responsible for SFD's. X-rays in the 0.5-3 Å range are slightly slower than the radiation responsible for SFD's during the decay stage; 1-8 Å X-ray flares are slower, especially during the decay stages; and 8-20 Å flare radiation enhancements are slower throughout the entire SFD.

Book Short duration Solar Microwave Bursts and Associated Soft X ray Emission

Download or read book Short duration Solar Microwave Bursts and Associated Soft X ray Emission written by Steven Randall Spangler and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a combination of ground-based and satellite instrumentation, solar flares are being studied over a wide range of wavelengths from radio through optical to X-ray. The prupose of this report is to further delineate parameters about the association of 2-12 A soft X-ray bursts with short duration 15 GHz microwave bursts. In the time period between November 1968 and March 1970, 147 cases of coincident microwave and X-ray flares have been examined to determine the relationships of start times, time of maxima, flux, and energy.
