Book Understanding Career Degree Expectations of Undergraduate Music Majors

Download or read book Understanding Career Degree Expectations of Undergraduate Music Majors written by Karen Patricia Munnelly and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year thousands of students graduate with music degrees. Many of these students will go on to engage in project-based work and maintain a portfolio career as opposed to having one full-time job within the field of music. Maintaining a portfolio career requires many skills outside of playing an instrument such as financial management, marketing, networking and fundraising. The goal of the study was to gain a better understanding into the career goals and degree expectations of undergraduate music majors, so that the data can be used to inform career development and career preparation programming within music schools. For this mixed-method study, online surveys were distributed to undergraduate music majors at seven higher education institutions. The findings revealed that there is a distinction between the jobs undergraduate music majors associate with success, the jobs they would ideally like to hold and the jobs they actually expect to hold. Many of the students surveyed are aware that they will likely hold multiple jobs and be self-employed as opposed to having one full-time job. The study also revealed that music majors desire that their undergraduate degree provide them with the skills necessary to be an employable musician in the 21st century in addition to providing artistic and technical skills on their instrument.

Book excerpt: In Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul, Deanna Witkowski brings a fresh perspective to the life and music of the legendary jazz pianist-composer Mary Lou Williams (1910-81). As a fellow jazz pianist-composer, adult convert to Catholicism, and liturgical composer, Witkowski offers unique insight gleaned from a twenty-year journey with Williams as her chosen musical and spiritual mentor. Viewing Williams’s musical and corporal acts of mercy as part of a singular effort to create community no matter the context, Witkowski examines how Williams created networks of support and friendship through her decades long letter correspondence with various women religious, her charitable work, and her tireless efforts to perform jazz in churches, community centers, concert halls, and schools. Throughout this fascinating story told with equal amounts of deep love and scholarly research, Witkowski illumines Williams’s passionate mantra that “jazz is healing to the soul.”

Book Expanding Career Options for Music Performance Majors Through University Partnerships and Modern Curriculums

Download or read book Expanding Career Options for Music Performance Majors Through University Partnerships and Modern Curriculums written by Marcus J. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pipeline to performance careers and entrepreneurship in the musical arts industry from higher-education institutions is often highly competitive and presents a limited number of opportunities for music performance majors making it difficult to have a realized path to success. A crucial imperative to helping potential professionals in the music industry in modern times threatens traditional higher education music pedagogical practices and encourages new methods of addressing societal needs. Although recent programs of music business and technology have been developed at many schools of music, providing additional skills for performance majors to grasp, there is still a significant number of music performance majors who find it difficult to land significant positions in the music industry. They often succumb to a myriad of alternate occupations that are outside the field of musical arts. This has led to the need to rethink the subject of professionalism in music and how it affects music education (Westerlund, 2022, p. 2). By developing community, corporate, governmental, and nonprofit partnerships, schools of music can increase success and provide more resources to musical art majors, particularly those in performance and music business, by providing internships, professional experiences, and encouraging mandatory industry research for career preparation and success.
