Book Royal Gardens of Europe

Download or read book Royal Gardens of Europe written by George Plumptre and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Versailles, Nymphenburg, Hampton Court, Schonbrunn, Het Loo - some of the most famous gardens in history were created by European royalty during the last three hundred years. This fascinating and wide-ranging network of historically influential, recently restored, and contemporary gardens from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland, Denmark, and Spain is collected for the first time in Royal Gardens of Europe. A lavishly illustrated volume, it includes not only well-known gardens such as Charlottenburg and Peterhof, much admired for their splendor, but also lesser-known landscapes created by royalty in recent decades - gardens that are just as impressive as their predecessors, but that set out to create intimacy rather than extravagant display."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Picturesque Garden in Europe

Download or read book The Picturesque Garden in Europe written by John Dixon Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "picturesque" or "natural" garden was the rage in eighteenth-century Europe. Inspired by painting, it also reflected changing attitudes to nature. Largely created and crafted in England, it was exported to other countries, which strove to adapt its forms to local conditions. This is the first book about that famous episode in garden history to look at the larger, European map of landscape design. The book traces the rise of the picturesque garden in England, exploring intricate dialogues between practical place-making and the theoretical formulations of the picturesque that began with Alexander Pope and Joseph Addison and ended with the writings of William Gilpin, Uvedale Price, and Richard Payne Knight in the 1790s. It surveys a wide range of sites -- Rousham, Stourhead, Kew, Hestercombe, The Leasowes, and Hafod, among others -- and the contributions to their creation by both amateurs and professionals. Europeans visited and wrote about many of these famous English landscapes. But the impact on European countries of the English example was complicated by the parallel rise of a picturesque garden in France, which had its own cultural direction even while it looked to England and China for inspiration. The French produced a crop of theoretical essays on the new "modern" garden as well as a set of astonishing designs -- Mereville, Desert de Retz, Monceau, Moulin-Joli, Ermenonville -- that were wholly and distinctly French, despite some superficial similarities with English creations. Finally, the book surveys the impact of English and French design upon other countries, in particular Sweden, the German-speaking lands, and Russia. The range of effect that could be created onEuropean sites is considerable and belies the notion that the picturesque was simply a process of making 3-D pictures in the landscape.

Book Coup D il at Bel il and a Great Number of European Gardens

Download or read book Coup D il at Bel il and a Great Number of European Gardens written by Charles Joseph prince de Ligne and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles-Joseph, seventh Prince de Ligne, Field marshal, Grandee of Spain, Knight of the Golden Fleece, sovereign of the minuscule county of Fagnolles in the Ardennes, and author of the Coup d'Oeil sur Beloeil, was born in 1735. Claiming descent from Charlemagne, intimate with royalty from Paris to Vienna to St. Petersburg, he traveled widely, associating with such luminaries as Madame de Stal, Voltaire, Frederick the Great, and Rousseau until the eighteenth-century douceur de vivre came to an abrupt halt with the French Revolution. Forced to flee his Belgian estates, he became an exile in Vienna, where he died in 1814, having attempted to support himself by writing. But Ligne's real passion was for his garden at Beloeil, which he described as he lay dying as "the handsomest garden in Europe . . . if it weren't for Versailles." This new critical edition presents the 1795 version of Ligne's masterwork, his garden treatise on Beloeil and the great gardens of Europe. Designed by Wolfgang Lederer and elegantly illustrated from sources Ligne himself might have known, this extensively annotated translation will introduce a new generation of readers to Ligne's intelligence and wit as well as his ideas on gardens. The charm and vivacity of the Prince's anecdotes and pithy observations lead one through his own beloved gardens to a Grand Tour of European culture in the eighteenth century. "These pages were composed in happy days, when the world was not sullied with crime and when our blood and tears had not been shed. I wrote names then that I no longer have the strength to utter. Now everything is altered. But that does not change the intent of my work, which was simply to give counsel and example to others. These are not the tales of a traveler but rather the precepts of a gardener."--Preface to the First Edition
