Those who are not the top fans of the Giants will also want this book, so they can try to get a leg up on the facts missing from the bookshelves of those Giants' fans who do not have this book. The book first tells the story about the founding of the Giants as a new team in 1925. The late Tim Mara, who now is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame acquired the Giants for a song. Mara needed a few more bucks to get through that first season before the Giants had become a head-smashing success. Mara had to fork over (invest) another $25,000 (50X the initial investment just to keep the franchise alive this first year. Because Mara kept the Giants alive, a team in NY City was assured and the team's success in its first three years in the NFL gave the NFL a must-have stronghold in the nation's largest city. The Giants are still a valuable property in the Mara family, with grandson John holding the reins today. .It seems like yesterday but for those pros trying to create a league out of nothing, there would have been nothing without their work. And of course, this great book about the Giants, eventually takes a deep look at the great and soon-to-be-immortal-Giants' coaches including #1 Bill Parcells, #2 Tom Coughlin, #3 Steve Owen, and #4 Allie Sherman, all the way to the current immortal with lots of years left, Pat Shurmur. This book captures the great Coaches in Giants Football. Book excerpt: One the greatest NFL broadcasters distills the wisdom of two of the greatest coaches As both a tight end and a place kicker for the 1958 Giants (back when special teams were part of the defense), Pat Summerall was the only person to be coached by both Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, the team's offensive and defensive coaches, respectively. The wide range of lessons covers personal behavior (react like a football player; training doesn't end in training camp; don't dwell on your success), work relationships (the boss keeps time, they can get somebody who wants to play) and winning (believe in your heart that you'll win, try to win every game, but focus on one game at a time) The book also lays out the Lombardi Code (Speak Confidently, and Prepare) and the Landry Code (Faith, Family and Football) Summerall tells vivid and inspirational stories about the game on and off the field that bring the lessons to life

Book Who s Better Who s Best in Coaching

Download or read book Who s Better Who s Best in Coaching written by Steve Silverman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranking the best coaches in NFL history is no easy task. How do we decide which coach had a bigger on-field impact? Or the best tactical skills, both defensively and offensively? Not to mention measuring the strength of what a coach does behind the scenes, how he motivates his players, or how he keeps them from cracking under the pressure. Is the “Hoodie” the greatest coach ever, or just lucky to have Tom Brady? What about Bill Parcells, Vince Lombardi, and John Madden? Where do they rank? Such are the questions that pro football writer Steve Silverman addresses in Who’s Better, Who’s Best in Coaching?. As statistician Elliott Kalb did with baseball, basketball, and golf, and Silverman himself did with football players in Who’s Better, Who’s Best in Coaching?, Silverman takes the next logical step in this new book. Taking the analytical methods he developed over his years as a senior editor at Pro Football Weekly, he applies them to an evaluation of coaches going back to the earliest days of the NFL. The result is a fascinating ranking of the best of the sideline, from legendary old-timers like Vince Lombardi to present-day blue-collar coaches like Tom Coughlin. Throughout, Silverman discusses the many considerations that must be made when comparing modern coaches with coaches of past eras, or when comparing abrasive and domineering coaches with the more relaxed and Zen-like coaches. Including biographical essays on those top fifty coaches and detailed statistics for their career records in both the playoffs and regular season, Who’s Better, Who’s Best in Coaching? is a must-have for anyone who considers football more than just a game and who is fascinated by how it’s coached. Book excerpt: The Thursday Speeches contains the compelling pregame speeches, packed with inspiring stories and invaluable life lessons, that Coach Don James used to transform the University of Washington football program from obscurity to the national championship during his legendary 18-year UW career. Two days before Christmas 1974, Don James seized the reins of a Washington football program in disarray. Immediately, James challenged players to do the hard work necessary to get to the Rose Bowl. Some players laughed, reminding James that Washington hadn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1963. James insisted on his vision. In his third season, the Huskies advanced to the Rose Bowl and - led by future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon - beat the heavily favored Michigan Wolverines. As but one measure of his coaching skill, Sports Illustrated once named the three best college football coaches in the country: No. 1, Don James; No. 2, Don James; No. 3, Don James.A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, the Husky Hall of Fame, and twice named National Coach of the Year, James remains the most successful football coach in Washington and the Pacific-12 Conference history. President of the American Football Coaches Association in 1989, James compiled a record of 153-57-2 at Washington and led the Huskies to 15 bowl games (10-5) including nine straight from 1979-1987. He guided the Huskies to six Rose Bowls and is one of only four coaches to win four Rose Bowl games. His 1991 team finished the season 12-0, beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and was named National Champion by USA Today/CNN, UPI, the Football Writers, Sports Illustrated, and several computer rankings.Written by Peter Tormey, Ph.D., a three-year UW letterman linebacker for James (1976-1979), The Thursday Speeches puts readers in the room with the legendary coach, revealing the exact words James used to inspire the Huskies to slay the football giants of his day. The book, which also contains new insights into James' leadership, is organized into four sections:Part I: Getting to the Rose Bowl.Part II: Themes of the Thursday SpeechesAttitudeLife LessonsCompetitive GreatnessVisualizing VictoryPART III: Glimmers - Short essays derived from interviews with Coach James.PART IV: A Lasting Legacy - Tributes to Coach James' influence from Coach Gary Pinkel, University of Missouri; Coach Nick Saban, University of Alabama; Sam Wick, friend; Jeffrey James, grandson; James' pastor, Rev. Jerry Mitchell; and Jill Woodruff, one of James' three children. The book stems from Tormey's doctoral research in Leadership Studies (Gonzaga University). James wrote the speeches before practice each Wednesday, by longhand, on 11-by-14-inch yellow legal pads.Exhibiting a voracious appetite for reading and an expansive intellect, James uses a wide range of powerful stories to engage the Huskies including topics such as Freud and Frankl, the Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the benefits of suffering, the importance of attitude, the key to problem-solving, the true meaning of fun. He fashions speeches around figures such as George Washington Carver, Benjamin Franklin, Julius Caesar, Vince Lombardi, and Helen Keller, and many others.James' transformation of the UW program proves what scholars have theorized: Leaders skilled with language have the power to literally speak things into being.Raised in Massillon, Ohio, James became a record-setting quarterback for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He was an assistant coach at Florida State, Michigan, and Colorado before becoming head coach at Kent State and Washington.James succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Oct. 20, 2013 at age 80. A portion of the proceeds from the book will be contributed...

Book excerpt: The Big Toxic School! This is Wilkes-Barre Area's tale of corruption, deception, taxation & tyranny. It is a struggle for safe, enduring neighborhood schools. We can't wait until there are no Wilkes-Barre high schools and the tax burden is unsustainable. In this book, you will learn about the actions taken by a democratically elected board of directors whose job is to manage the affairs of the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. Unfortunately, in this book and through other sources, you will also learn that though this board was duly elected by the people, they lied about their intentions. In fact, they misrepresented themselves by agreeing, if elected, to represent the people and provide for the needs of the people above all else. We will cite quotations from citizens subject to the board's dictates. You will see that this board has chosen to follow a corrupt course of action rather than follow the known wishes of the people of the area which they serve. The essence of the issue in dispute is whether perfectly maintainable and well-built and historically relevant neighborhood school structures in the City of Wilkes-Barre should be abandoned, discarded, and torn down so that the board can build its idea of a Taj Mahal School on top of a toxic mine dump, in a community outside the city expected to give up its high schools for this folly. The three WB City High Schools currently meet the needs of the students and the taxpayers of the City of Wilkes-Barre. Coughlin, GAR, and Meyers.

Book The Electoral College 4 Dummmies

Download or read book The Electoral College 4 Dummmies written by Brian W Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, you will learn about the purpose of the Electoral College and be able to come to your own conclusions about whether the Founders were all wet in the late 1700's and we now need to revert back to the popular vote. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the Popular vote yet Donald Trump won the presidency. Therefore, many of the political left are crying foul. In 2000, when George Bush was elected president without winning the popular vote the same cry was heard. Neither of these were as bad as in 1824, when John Quincy Adams was elected president despite not winning either the popular vote or the electoral vote. How could this be? Andrew Jackson was the clear winner in both categories. Jackson's popular vote total was 38,000 more than Adams. Moreover, Jackson beat Adams in the electoral vote 99 to 84. Despite being victorious, Jackson did no win the presidency. Why? Andrew Jackson did not reach the majority 131 votes needed in the Electoral College to be declared president. Neither candidate did. So, what happened? The decision was made by the House of Representatives. It was the House-the People's Representatives, which voted Adams into the White House. There were only two other stories like these. In 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes won the election by a margin of just one electoral vote; but he lost the popular vote by more than 250,000 ballots to Samuel J. Tilden. In 1888, Benjamin Harrison received 233 electoral votes to Grover Cleveland's 168, winning the presidency. Harrison lost the popular vote by more than 90,000 votes. Why is this? When U.S. citizens go to the polls to "elect" a president, they are in fact voting for a particular slate of electors, though they vote for a properly named presidential candidate. In almost every state, the candidate who wins the most votes (that is, a plurality) in the state receives all the state's electoral votes. These are electoral votes based on the popular votes. Why is this? You bought this book to find out. Is it a good or is it a bad idea? Is there any rhyme or reason to it? Were the Founders out on a bender the night before they made this decision or was the Electoral College a stroke of genius? This is your best book to discover the answer and for understanding the current system and other possible systems to determine the presidency fairly. Just because powerful people choose to ignore our rights and freedoms does not mean we must endure tyranny. The first step of course is to understand the most basic written precepts in the Constitution. Understanding the role of the Electoral College in our Constitution is of prime importance. Reading this book is a must.
