Download or read book Staging the Great Circus Parade written by Jim and Donna Peterson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milwaukee was home to the Great Circus Parade for almost 30 years. Beginning in 1963 and continuing until 1972, the parade became an annual tradition, except in 1967 when the event was cancelled because of civil unrest. Revived on a smaller scale in 1980, the parade traveled between Baraboo and Chicago until it returned to Milwaukee in 1985. Each year, it grew in size and scope, gaining national prominence. The old-fashioned circus parade became an event of mammoth proportions, requiring an army of volunteers working behind the scenes.

Book Circus Dreams

Book excerpt: Every July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Great Circus Parade brings circus history back to life. The wagons that rolled down the streets of Europe as well as America 100 years ago to announce that the circus had come to town, roll again. It is a week-long celebration that starts off in Baraboo, Wisconsin, home of the Circus Wold Museum, where the wagons have been restored and are on public display. Draft-horse teams come from all parts of the country to load the wagons on to vintage flatcars in turn-of-the-century style. The circus train travels across Wisconsin and Illinois for two days and arrives in Milwaukee to a showground set with animal petting zoos, horse tents, bandwagons, and the Big Top. For three days people come to see the wagons and share the circus atmosphere. On Sunday, the seventh day, the Great Circus Parade marches down the main street: 700 horses, 150 wagons, including the spectacular 40-horse hitch, 250 clowns, a kingdom of wild animals escorted by red-coated outriders, scores of brassy wagon-top and marching bands, hundreds of glittering costumed participants - making this one of America's greatest events.

Book Encyclopedia of American Folklife

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Folklife written by Simon J Bronner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-04 with total page 1469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American folklife is steeped in world cultures, or invented as new culture, always evolving, yet often practiced as it was created many years or even centuries ago. This fascinating encyclopedia explores the rich and varied cultural traditions of folklife in America - from barn raisings to the Internet, tattoos, and Zydeco - through expressions that include ritual, custom, crafts, architecture, food, clothing, and art. Featuring more than 350 A-Z entries, "Encyclopedia of American Folklife" is wide-ranging and inclusive. Entries cover major cities and urban centers; new and established immigrant groups as well as native Americans; American territories, such as Guam and Samoa; major issues, such as education and intellectual property; and expressions of material culture, such as homes, dress, food, and crafts. This encyclopedia covers notable folklife areas as well as general regional categories. It addresses religious groups (reflecting diversity within groups such as the Amish and the Jews), age groups (both old age and youth gangs), and contemporary folk groups (skateboarders and psychobillies) - placing all of them in the vivid tapestry of folklife in America. In addition, this resource offers useful insights on folklife concepts through entries such as "community and group" and "tradition and culture." The set also features complete indexes in each volume, as well as a bibliography for further research.

Book Forgotten Tales of Wisconsin

Download or read book Forgotten Tales of Wisconsin written by Martin Hintz and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drift back to an era when the speed limit in Milwaukee was an edgy four miles per hour and Madison lawmakers could poke at hogs to punctuate the tedium of legislative sessions. Martin Hintz makes even the slow times of the Badger State fly by in this collection of Wisconsin's forgotten memories. Taste the world's first batch of pink lemonade (made with the dye of a circus performer's pants) and witness the tragic death of the world's last wild passenger pigeon. Track down ancient Algonkin legends like the great serpent that swam up the Mississippi looking for copper, and drop in on modern legends like Les Paul, whose guitar spun records into gold.
