Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Catholic Laymen It will be said at once that hitherto Catholics, at least in these countries, through the lack of University training, and therefore through the absence of that fine sense of appreciation for whatever is valuable or attractive in the persona lities of their great co-religionists', have been con spicuously indifferent about the lives or thoughts, or works of those, who clinging fast to the tenets of their faith, have wrought great deeds either through the emancipation of oppressed creeds or nationalities, or through important additions to literature, or through discoveries in science made in the seclusion of their studies or labo ratories. And from this indifference there sprang a natural, yet quite erroneous inference, that outside the domain of theology and philosophy the Catholic Church had little to show in the industry or intelligence of her children. Book The Priests We Need To Save the Church

Download or read book The Priests We Need To Save the Church written by Kevin Wells and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While dissolute bishops and priests around the world grab headlines for their untoward words and deeds, too many other unfruitful priests minister as little more than glad-handing bachelors doing social service work. Top and bottom, is this the Church that Christ intended? Are these the priests we need? “No!” cries author Kevin Wells in these compelling pages that showcase how heroic priests can faithfully tread the narrow path of holy self-sacrifice first blazed by the apostles themselves. From scores of insightful interviews with modern priests, exorcists, seminary formators, and even disillusioned laity, Wells here draws forth a blueprint for priestly holiness that can once again fill our Church with priests abounding with sincere, supernatural faith, on fire with God's love, and moved by the irresistible impulse to save souls, no matter the cost to themselves. Reading this book will deepen your own faith and help you understand what all

Book To Hunt To Shoot To Entertain

Download or read book To Hunt To Shoot To Entertain written by Russell Shaw and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why hasn't the Catholic Church been more successful up to now in realizing the Second Vatican Council's call for the evangelization of secular culture? Why hasn't the Gospel been preached more forthrightly to the modern world? The most important reason, as well as the least recognized, may be clericalism: the attitude, widely shared by Catholic laypeople as well as many priests, that clerics make up the active, elite corps in the Church, and laypeople are the passive mass; that clerics alone have intrinsic responsibility for the Church's mission while the apostalate of laypeople comes to them (if they come at all) only by delegation on the part of the clergy. To Hunt, To Shoot, To Entertain probes the theological and historical roots of this clericalist mentality as it has affected the Catholic laity, along with contemporary expressions of clericalism--the over-involvement of some clerics in secular politics, the sometimes exaggerated emphasis given to "lay ministers," and certain aspects for the feminist movement in today's Catholicism. This is not another revisionist attack on the priesthood, not one more alienated voice from the pews. Instead the book offers a prescription for authentic ecclesial renewal based on new, healthier lay-clergy relations in light of the teaching of Vatican II, Pope John Paul II, and other voices of the Magisterium. It presents a positive vision of a Church in which laypeople and clergy regard one another with mutual respect as partners in her mission to the world, with indispensable, contemporary tasks arising from their own special vocations.

Book excerpt: Searching for answers in the midst of the sexual abuse crisis in the church, many blamed the clerical culture. But what exactly is this clerical culture? We may know it when we see it, but how can we 'whether clergy or laypeople 'go about dismantling it and putting in place a new, healthy culture? George Wilson has spent decades working with organizations to help them discover, and often recover, their foundational calling. He is also a Jesuit priest engaged in the lives of congregations. In Clericalism: The Death of Priesthood he brings together both capacities and gives his sense of the challenges facing the church. As members of the church, Wilson maintains, we are all responsible for creating a clerical culture. And we are also responsible for that culture's transformation. Clericalism aids this transformation by helping us examine some underlying attitudes that create and preserve destructive relationships between ordained and laity. After looking at the crisis and establishing where we are now, this book challenges us with concrete suggestions for changing behaviors. We are lay and ordained, but all baptized into the royal priesthood of 1 Peter 2:9, all called to spread the Gospel and do the work of God's love in the world. Ultimately, this is a hopeful book, looking for the restoration of a genuine priesthood, free of clericalism, in which we become truly united in Christ..

Book excerpt: The popular blogger and publisher of Envoy magazine offers 10 key reasons why he loves being Catholic (and you should too). Drawing heavily on poignant anecdotes from his own experience as a life-long Catholic born in 1960s, Madrid offers readers a way of looking at the Church--its members, teachings, customs, and history--from perspectives many may have never considered. Growing up Catholic during a time of great social and theological upheaval and transition, a time in which countless Catholics abandoned their religion in search of something else, Patrick Madrid learned a great deal about why people leave Catholicism and why others stay. This experience helped him gain many insights into what it is about the Catholic Church that some people reject, as well as those things that others treasure. Drawing upon Madrid's personal experiences, Why Be Catholic? offers a deeply personal, fact-based, rationale for why everyone should be Catholic or at least consider the Catholic Church in a new light.

Book The Roman Catholic Church Challenged in the Discussion of Thirty Two Questions with the Catholic Laymen s Association of Georgia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Roman Catholic Church Challenged in the Discussion of Thirty Two Questions with the Catholic Laymen s Association of Georgia Classic Reprint written by Dr. C. A. Yarbrough and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church Challenged in the Discussion of Thirty-Two Questions With the Catholic Laymen's Association of Georgia To master any subject - whether art, science, music, language, or profession - requires several years' study and close application, and the expenditure of considerable money; for these reasons, few people undertake the task of becoming proficient in more than one. Any one, though, with the time and means, may master several branches, and some do; but it is usually only those who purpose teaching, writing, etc. The average person can, however, by a little application and at a nominal expense secure a sufficient knowledge of the arts and sciences as to understand their main principles, and have the satisfaction of knowing their value to society in general. This is true in regard to the subject of Roman Catholicism; a knowlege of it cannot be acquired in a day, week, month. It has so many phases which affect the spiritual, physical and intellectual world that it is necessary to devote considerable time and money to it to secure even an insight into the system. That this is true is evidenced by the fact that to become a priest twelve years or more must be spent studying the various subjects necessary to qualify one for the priesthood. Many good people have never given this question an hour's consideration, and if their attention is called to any abstract proposition relative thereto, they are apt to say they do not believe it. To inform them that aqua pura in Latin means "pure water" in English, and then hear them say, "I don't believe it!" represents the attitude of those to the papal system who have never given it any attention. It would be a waste of energy and foolish to try to go far enough in the discussion of the Latin tongue to prove to their satisfaction that aqua pura means "pure water" - they would have to devote months to the study of that language before they would believe. I have spent many months in the assiduous study of Romanism; have closely read thousands of pages of literature, from non-Catholic and approved Catholic sources, yet I must confess there is more to learn. But what I have gleaned, I have endeavored to so present it in these pages as will give a clear and concise understanding of its main features, treating of certain fundamental principles of the system that should be considered seriously by every one who enjoys the blessings of Liberty provided by the Constitution of the United States, and is a compendium of reliable information that every person should possess, which cannot be secured otherwise than by following the course pursued by me. I believe the reader will be convinced that the Roman Catholic Church is a deadly foe to the Constitution of this country, and every human right and liberty guaranteed by it. Book excerpt: The story of Catholicism in Britain from the Reformation to the present day, from a master of popular history – 'A first-class storyteller' The Times Throughout the three hundred years that followed the Act of Supremacy – which, by making Henry VIII head of the Church, confirmed in law the breach with Rome – English Catholics were prosecuted, persecuted and penalised for the public expression of their faith. Even after the passing of the emancipation acts Catholics were still the victims of institutionalised discrimination. The first book to tell the story of the Catholics in Britain in a single volume, The Catholics includes much previously unpublished information. It focuses on the lives, and sometimes deaths, of individual Catholics – martyrs and apostates, priests and laymen, converts and recusants. It tells the story of the men and women who faced the dangers and difficulties of being what their enemies still call ‘Papists’. It describes the laws which circumscribed their lives, the political tensions which influenced their position within an essentially Anglican nation and the changes in dogma and liturgy by which Rome increasingly alienated their Protestant neighbours – and sometime even tested the loyalty of faithful Catholics. The survival of Catholicism in Britain is the triumph of more than simple faith. It is the victory of moral and spiritual unbending certainty. Catholicism survives because it does not compromise. It is a characteristic that excites admiration in even a hardened atheist.
