Book Youth Unemployment and State Intervention

Download or read book Youth Unemployment and State Intervention written by Paul Atkinson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-19 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, against the background of chronic unemployment in Britain, the particular plight of young people had come to be identified as a subject for special concern. Anxieties were expressed, as they were in the 1930s, as a twin concern for a waste of the nation’s resources and for the demoralization of youth, leading potentially to anti-social behaviour. Originally published in 1982, this volume of essays identifies a number of key issues in the pattern of state response to youth unemployment which had evolved in the inter-war and post-war periods. The contributors discuss a number of related themes, such as how the problem has been defined and created as a kind of ‘moral panic’, and how contemporary measures recapitulate the rhetoric and policies of pre-war interventions. They examine the relationship between youth unemployment measures and the education sector, the responses of the trade unions, and also consider how young people themselves respond to special programmes. A critical assessment is made of the further education elements in the special measures: in particular, the question is asked: do these young people need ‘social and life skills’ training? The book charts the changing nature of the state response to youth unemployment since 1974, and stresses throughout the inappropriate nature of ‘temporary’ amelioration of a long-term, even permanent, problem.

Download or read book Youth Unemployment and the Youth Contract written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Work and Pensions Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report comments positively on some aspects of the design of the Youth Contract. It builds on the types of interventions which have been shown to have a positive impact: increased Jobcentre Plus (JCP) adviser support; work experience placements; and apprenticeships. It also welcomes the inclusion of a new scheme for 16-17 year-olds, the large majority of whom do not receive support from JCP as they are ineligible for Jobseekers Allowance (JSA). The Committee acknowledges that the Government has sensibly focused wage incentives - the key new element of the Youth Contract - on longer term young unemployed claimants and there is an attempt to achieve sustainable job outcomes by linking wage incentives to the Work Programme payment structure, in which providers are financially incentivised to keep participants in work and off benefits in the longer term. However the Youth Contract on its own it will not be enough to address the current unacceptably high level of youth unemployment. A significant impact can only be made if all the targets are met. In particular, past experience shows that 160,000 wage incentives is a very ambitious target in the current economic climate. And 250,000 additional work experience placements for young people may also be unrealistic

Book The Politics of Unemployment Policy in Britain

Download or read book The Politics of Unemployment Policy in Britain written by Jay Wiggan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an account of the evolution of social security and employment policy and governance in Britain between 1973 and 2023. It explains how this remaking of policy and governance shaped, and was shaped by, the transformation of the labour market and power of claimants and workers. Advancing a class-centred explanation, the text situates contemporary working age active labour market policy as the contingent outcome of a long struggle over curtailment of labour autonomy and the challenges arising from policy ‘success’ for securing social cohesion, state legitimacy and better economic conditions for growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the multiple connections between education, broadly defined, and work, through an analysis of the literature on the transition from school to work, on vocational training and on the labour market. This book is essential reading for students of European training systems and for those conducting comparative European research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. The financial decision-making system is an extremely complicated one; it handles large sums of money but very often teachers feel that little of it filters through to their end of the system. This book explains, analyses and criticises the complexities of the financial decision-making systems in education. It discusses the role of the different bodies and people involved and explores the thinking and conventions which shape their findings. It considers how the effects of financial decisions made in the system are reflected in the curriculum and in the classroom, and puts forward possible alternative methods of finance such as vouchers, loans and privatisation.
