Book Great Blue Herons Breeding in the Maritime Provinces

Download or read book Great Blue Herons Breeding in the Maritime Provinces written by Allan D. Smith and published by [Sackville, N.B.] : Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 2006 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) breeding in the Maritime Provinces was studied as part of the National Heron Census (NHC) in 1979-82, when regional reports were published for all other parts of the species' Canadian range. That information from the Maritimes, with many other data from earlier and later periods, is summarized herein, including many details that were not presented in the Maritimes breeding bird atlas (Erskine 1992). These herons breed (or bred) in at least 34 of 36 counties in the region, and data now available confirm the preliminary estimate. Breeding numbers may have increased up to 1980, but probably were stable since then. Poorly standardized assessment of productivity produced a range of estimates of which the upper limit was somewhat lower than found by two intensive regional studies in the 1970s.

Book excerpt: With its striking plumage, the great blue heron is one of the most widely recognized wading birds in North America. Riding on kelp beds in the Queen Charlotte Islands, wading in coastal streams along the mainland, poised motionless at the water's edge on a misty morning, or nesting in the limbs of old-growth forests, this stately bird is a familiar sight on the coast of British Columbia. The largest colonies are on the Fraser River delta, an area of great ecological significance to the north Pacific. Despite a growing body of knowledge regarding many aspects of the species' breeding biology and courtship behaviour, the foraging and population ecology of this bird remains something of an enigma. In his beautifully illustrated book, Robert Butler follows the great blue heron through a year on the coast of British Columbia. He draws on more than a decade of work to throw light on the adaptability of this magnificent bird to a temperate climate, its diet and breeding habits, habitat use, and conservation. Although the great blue heron has become a symbol of wetland conservation, in recent years it has had to face new challenges as a consequence of rapid urbanization of its environment. In The Great Blue Heron the author also describes the B.C. coast and shares a vision for the conservation of the Strait of Georgia and the Fraser River delta.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a six-year study of the great blue heron (Ardea herodias) on British Columbia's Pacific coast. The study period included five breeding seasons and four winters. The researchers studied a colony of 85-100 pairs on Sidney Island and visited about 40 other colonies around the Strait of Georgia over 1986-91. This report presents the results of the study, with information on the heron's diet, food availability, foraging behavior, use of habitats by age-classes and sex-classes, seasonal shifts in habitat use, spacing of breeding colonies in relation to predators and foraging habitats, effects of nest site selection and time of breeding on breeding success, and local survival of age-classes.

Book excerpt: A 104-page book, rich with photographs, describing the Great Blue Heron, both in breeding and non-breeding seasons. Specific topics include history, distribution and migration; mate selection, nest building and breeding; raising chicks; fledging of chicks, life beyond the rookery, and a conservation message. Sadly, the island rookery featured in this book was demolished the following year by a tornado which killed all the just-hatching chicks and many of the adults. They had returned to this rookery on the Northern Mississippi River after surviving the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Book Breeding Distribution and Population Trends of the Great Blue Heron in Quebec 1977 2001

Download or read book Breeding Distribution and Population Trends of the Great Blue Heron in Quebec 1977 2001 written by Jean-Luc DesGranges and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regular surveys of Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) colonies in Quebec, conducted between 1977 and 2001, resulted in the discovery of 705 colonies, mostly in the western part of the province. While single breeding pairs were occasionally found (9% of Quebec "heronries"), the colonies were generally composed of fewer than 16 breeding pairs, with sometimes over 50 (18 known colonies), as was the case on several islands in the St. Lawrence River. Close to one-third (1919 of the 6481 active nests) of the Quebec Great Blue Heron population was associated with heronries in the St. Lawrence system. Half of the St. Lawrence heronries that were active during two adjacent survey periods (1975-1983 and 1984-1990, or 1984-1990 and 1991-2001) increased in size between periods, while one-third of the colonies decreased in size. One-sixth of the colonies remained the same size during the study period. Great Blue Herons periodically abandon their colonies and settle elsewhere. Our data show that 50% of known Quebec colonies (n = 377 colonies visited more than once) were abandoned after being discovered as active colonies, and, on average, all nests in colonies that are abandoned disappear 7 years after discovery of the colony. On the basis of thorough inventories conducted on the St. Lawrence, we found that all nest platforms in 14 of the 70 colony sites had disappeared in less than 25 years. Since 1977, when regular surveys began, 50-90% of breeding attempts have been successful, yielding an average of over 2.2 chicks per pair. This productivity rate suggests that the Quebec population of Great Blue Herons may be increasing and may explain the recent expansion in its range. Following our 25 years of investigation on the Great Blue Heron in the province, we estimate the current late-summer Great Blue Heron population of Quebec at some 27 000 individuals (6500 pairs producing 2.2 young per pair per year).--Publisher's description.
