Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Lawyers, Vol. 5: The Lives and Influence of Judges and Lawyers Who Have Acquired Permanent National Reputation, and Have Developed the Jurisprudence of the United States; A History of the Legal Profession in America He was determined to go to college, and both his parents encouraged him to do so. After a prepara tory school training of eight months, he entered the freshman class at Dartmouth eight months in ad vance, and graduated with honor in 1825. During his college course he supplied himself with funds for his expenses principally by teaching, and by mak ing and selling maple sugar in the spring of the year. He afterward commented upon the fun his fellow collegians made of the cowhide shoes he wore, and would say, They were good-natured fellows, though; if they had known my shoes were the best I could afford, they would not have spoken of them. He was admitted to the bar of Orleans County in 1827, and practiced at Derby eight years, the last three of which he was States Attorney of the county. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Lawyers, Vol. 1: The Lives and Influence of Judges and Lawyers Who Have Acquired Permanent National Reputation, and Have Developed the Jurisprudence of the United States, a History of the Legal Profession in America The aim of this work is not to present a mere collection of biographical sketches of great American judges and lawyers of the past, but to give a history of the development of legal institutions and an insight into social and political conditions existing in different parts of the country at practically every period of our colonial and national progress. It is hoped that taken separately each article will be found to give an account of the person written about sufficiently full to enable the reader to grasp his personality, a picture of the times in which he lived and the nature and character of his legal services. The history of America, especially at critical periods, is so bound up with the personality of the leading members of the Bar, that a coherent series of monographs on the great judges and lawyers of the past will have an interest and value to every student of our history. To the educated lawyer the lives of those who in the past have reached a great place in the profession, enriching it, not only by their learning in the law, but by the bright example of their professional conduct, must always be a source of interest and inspiration.
