Book Going Gray

Download or read book Going Gray written by Anne Kreamer and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2007-09-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Kreamer considered herself a youthful 49 until a photo of herself with her teenage daughter stopped her in her tracks. In one unguarded moment she saw herself for what she really was -- a middle-aged woman with her hair dyed much too harshly. In that one moment Kreamer realized that she wasn't fooling anyone about her age and decided it was time to get real and embrace a more authentic life. She set out for herself a program to let her hair become its true color, and along the way discovered her true self. Going Gray is Kreamer's exploration of that experience, and a frank, warm and funny investigation of aging as a female obsession. Through interviews, field experiments, and her own everywoman's chronicle, Kreamer probes the issues behind two of the biggest fears aging women face: Can I be sexually attractive as a gray-haired, middle-aged woman? Will I be discriminated against in the work world? Her answers will surprise you. In searching for the balance between attractiveness and authenticity, Kreamer's journey of middle-aging illiminates in a friendly, useful, and entertaining way the politics and personal costs of this generation's definition of "aging gracefully".

Book Fishing Ghosts and My Mother s Gray Hair

Download or read book Fishing Ghosts and My Mother s Gray Hair written by Mark Kautz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about fishing and some other stuff. I've been fishing most of my life, and since I turned sixty-five in 2011, I'm writing about some of my adventures, thus the title, Fishing, Ghosts, and My Mother's Gray Hair. I recently read a book by another author that told of his fishing adventures, and I figured that if he can write about his, I should write about mine. I think mine are just as interesting, if not more, but everything I write about is not related to fishing. The book covers adventures from when I was a wee lad of about six to today. I moved from Wisconsin, where I was born, to Florida and then to California, and some of the adventures cover times when things were a lot different than they are today. Each place I lived had a direct effect on what I did and how the adventures developed. I'm going to talk about places that don't exist any longer, and in doing so, I'll try to give you a perspective of what the place looked like then and where it is in relation to that place today. With the advent of Google maps, I figure if you want to look up some of these places that I'm going to talk about, that is probably the best way to get a map view of the area and be able to follow along with the narration. I have a very good friend who lives in Missouri. He and I were best friends while we were growing up. We lived two doors away from each other and had all the usual fights that best friends have, and that's what kept us best friends. Recently he made a comment that really brought our age (he's six months older than I am) into focus. "If we hadn't done what we did when we were younger, we wouldn't feel like the way we do today." Never a truer word has been spoken. So let me take you on a lifetime adventure across the span of time and across the country. Sit down in a comfortable chair, fasten your seatbelt, and be prepared to relive the sanity and insanity of a kid that survived growing up.

Book 8 000 Miles Across Alaska

Download or read book 8 000 Miles Across Alaska written by Jill Homer and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In North America's Last Frontier, there are still untrammeled wildernesses where a man can stand alone in a region the size of entire states, where deep cold quiets every whisper of life and vast emptiness reigns. Alaska remains a mysterious place that, thanks to reality television, has captured the imagination of millions. Yet a minuscule fraction have acquired an understanding of the land afforded by exploring in their most vulnerable state -- on foot, towing all of their supplies, wholly independent. This is the perspective of Tim Hewitt, an employment lawyer from Pennsylvania with a unique hobby -- racing across Alaska on the Iditarod Trail. What compels a man to run, walk, and trudge a thousand miles across Alaska? "Because it's there" isn't an adequate explanation. "As a challenge" or "for the adventure of it" are closer, but still too vague. The thousand-mile dog sled race on the Iditarod Trail is often called "The Last Great Race" -- but there's another, more obscure race, where participants don't even have the help of dogs. The Iditarod Trail Invitational challenges cyclists, skiers, and runners to complete the distance under their own power and without much outside support. Tim Hewitt is the only person to have completed it more than three times. His actual number? An astonishing eight. Six of those, he won or tied. But no one who sees Tim Hewitt on the street near his law firm in Pittsburgh would ever suspect that battling hurricane-force blizzards is something he does in his spare time. Fifty-nine years old with a slim build, a bright smile, and cropped gray hair, he isn't the stereotype of a grizzled Arctic explorer. He's a talented amateur runner, a father to four daughters, a husband to an equally adventurous wife, and achiever of a truly distinctive accomplishment. Far more people have reached the summit of Mount Everest than Nome under their own power, and it's incredibly unlikely that another person will ever try for eight."8,000 Miles Across Alaska: A Runner's Journeys on the Iditarod Trail" chronicles Tim Hewitt's adventures crossing the stark wilderness of Alaska in the depth of winter -- the harrowing weather conditions, breathtaking scenery, kindness of strangers, humorous misadventures, humbling setbacks and heroic victories. From fierce competition with his fellow racers, to traveling backward on the trail to ensure the safety of his wife, to battling for his own survival, Tim Hewitt has amassed a lifetime of experiences amid the harsh miles of the Iditarod Trail. This is his story.

Book Great Adventure

  • Author : Mary M. Mayhew
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2002-01-03
  • ISBN : 1462809847
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Great Adventure written by Mary M. Mayhew and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2002-01-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When 40-something housewife/mother, Muriel “Boo Boo” Gertrude Setzer Wilkerson Knowlton collides with middle age --a.k.a. “change” -- she clings the more stubbornly to her sacred convictions of her own inferiority, unworthiness, undesirability, and to her false pride and arrogance. But “change” persists: * Classes with the swami in New Age thought, combined with her daughter’s clairvoyance, begin to topple personal paradigms; * A new job at Great Convenience Store forces proximity to the dreaded gamut of humanity -- “Americana” at its best and worst -- which teaches that life is funny and worth is more than skin deep; * Husband Larke forms a friendship with a beautiful rival; * A mystery man -- an astrologer/ecologist/Vietnam veteran -- forces Muriel to claim her womanhood, mercilessly stripping her of false concepts, leaving her soul naked before her personal power of Being; * Danger and death force a shift of awareness and perspective, enabling Muriel to see that there is “extra” in the ordinary; that one creates one’s own reality; that it is one’s personal responsibility to be joyful, to savor the life experience with no apologies, to be Who one truly is, to love and be loved, and indeed, to relish the journey through life as a Great Adventure. Humor, pathos, a bucolic small-town setting, a believable narrative pace, a cornucopia of personalities and an endearing American family combine with some out-of-the-mainstream thought to create a unique, engaging read. The storyline is loosely constructed (typical of life) while a deeper, more comprehensive thread of meaning subtly weaves through life’s daily kaleidoscope, tying together the whole picture and building subconsciously in urgency right up to the last chapter’s WHAMMY.

Book The Adventure Gap

Download or read book The Adventure Gap written by James Edward Mills and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2024-09-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features a new “where are they now” section, updating readers on lives of expedition’s original climbers Fully updated and detailed resources based on the "Anti-Racism in the Outdoors" (ARITO) guide Readers’ Guide explores additional context and questions for further consideration Outdoor journalist James Edward Mills’s book, The Adventure Gap, is a groundbreaking volume that is equal parts adventure story, history, and inspiration as it chronicles the first American all-Black summit attempt on Denali in 2013. Mills uses this momentous expedition as a jumping-off point to explore diversity in the outdoors, from Mathew Henson who stood at the North Pole in 1909 to contemporary adventurers such as polar explorer Barbara Hillary and rock climber Kai Lightner. This tenth anniversary edition once again shares the compelling events that unfolded during Expedition Denali’s summit bid. But it also provides fresh context: A new thought-provoking afterword by Mills examines what has evolved in and around the outdoor community since that effort. He highlights progress and inspiring stories, such as Full Circle Everest, an expedition led by Phillip Henderson that put an all-Black team on top of the world’s highest peak. And he points to places where we can and should all strive for higher achievement. The Adventure Gap has become an essential text in outdoor education and inspiration--a story of our times, now more relevant than ever.
