Book Multiphase Flow in Porous Media

Download or read book Multiphase Flow in Porous Media written by P.M. Adler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of multiphase flow through porous media is undergoing intense development, mostly due to the recent introduction of new methods. After the profound changes induced by percolation in the eighties, attention is nowadays focused on the pore scale. The physical situation is complex and only recently have tools become available that allow significant progress to be made in the area. This volume on Multiphase Flow in Porous Media, which is also being published as a special issue of the journal Transport in Porous Media, contains contributions on the lattice-Boltzmann technique, the renormalization technique, and semi-phenomenological studies at the pore level. Attention is mostly focused on two- and three-phase flows. These techniques are of tremendous importance for the numerous applications of multiphase flows in oil fields, unsaturated soils, the chemical industry, and environmental sciences.

Book Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media

Download or read book Principles of Heat Transfer in Porous Media written by M. Kaviany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the empirical treatment of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media is over a century old, only in the last three decades has the transport in these heterogeneous systems been addressed in detail. So far, single-phase flows in porous media have been treated or at least formulated satisfactorily, while the subject of two-phase flow and the related heat-transfer in porous media is still in its infancy. This book identifies the principles of transport in porous media and compares the avalaible predictions based on theoretical treatments of various transport mechanisms with the existing experimental results. The theoretical treatment is based on the volume-averaging of the momentum and energy equations with the closure conditions necessary for obtaining solutions. While emphasizing a basic understanding of heat transfer in porous media, this book does not ignore the need for predictive tools; whenever a rigorous theoretical treatment of a phenomena is not avaliable, semi-empirical and empirical treatments are given.

Book Wicking in Porous Materials

Download or read book Wicking in Porous Materials written by Reza Masoodi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive presentation of wicking models developed in academia and industry, Wicking in Porous Materials: Traditional and Modern Modeling Approaches contains some of the most important approaches and methods available, from the traditional Washburn-type models to the latest Lattice-Boltzmann approaches developed during the last few years. It provides a sound conceptual framework for learning the science behind different mathematical models while at the same time being aware of the practical issues of model validation as well as measurement of important properties and parameters associated with various models. Top experts in the field reveal the secrets of their wicking models. The chapters cover the following topics: Wetting and wettability Darcy’s law for single- and multi-phase flows Traditional capillary models, such as the Washburn-equation based approaches Unsaturated-flow based methodologies (Richard’s Equation) Sharp-front (plug-flow) type approaches using Darcy’s law Pore network models for wicking after including various micro-scale fluid-flow phenomena Studying the effect of evaporation on wicking using pore network models Fractal-based methods Modeling methods based on mixture theory Lattice-Boltzmann method for modeling wicking in small scales Modeling wicking in swelling and non-rigid porous media This extensive look at the modeling of porous media compares various methods and treats traditional topics as well as modern technologies. It emphasizes experimental validation of modeling approaches as well as experimental determination of model parameters. Matching models to particular media, the book provides guidance on what models to use and how to use them.

Book Porous Media Fluid Transport and Pore Structure

Download or read book Porous Media Fluid Transport and Pore Structure written by F Dullien and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porous Media: Fluid Transport and Pore Structure presents relevant data on the role of pore structure in terms of transport phenomena in pore spaces. The information is then applied to the interpretation of various experiments and results of model calculations. This book emphasizes the discussion of ""flow through porous media"" in terms of interactions among the three main factors. These factors are transport phenomena, interfacial effects, and pore structure. An introductory chapter opens the text and presents some of the basic concepts and terms that will be encountered all throughout. Chapters 2 to 4 focus on the important foundations of the physical phenomena as applied in the pore space of porous media. These foundations are capillarity, pore structure, and single phase flow and diffusion. Chapters 5 to 7 discuss more in detail the different applications of pore structure to various operations and processes. Some of the concepts covered in this part of the book include flow and/or diffusion through a porous medium, simultaneous flow of immiscible fluids and immiscible displacement, and miscible displacement and hydrodynamic dispersion. This book is a good reference to students, scientists, and engineers in the field of chemistry, physics, and biology.

Book Flow and Transport in Porous Media and Fractured Rock

Download or read book Flow and Transport in Porous Media and Fractured Rock written by Muhammad Sahimi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this standard reference of the field, theoretical and experimental approaches to flow, hydrodynamic dispersion, and miscible displacements in porous media and fractured rock are considered. Two different approaches are discussed and contrasted with each other. The first approach is based on the classical equations of flow and transport, called 'continuum models'. The second approach is based on modern methods of statistical physics of disordered media; that is, on 'discrete models', which have become increasingly popular over the past 15 years. The book is unique in its scope, since (1) there is currently no book that compares the two approaches, and covers all important aspects of porous media problems; and (2) includes discussion of fractured rocks, which so far has been treated as a separate subject. Portions of the book would be suitable for an advanced undergraduate course. The book will be ideal for graduate courses on the subject, and can be used by chemical, petroleum, civil, environmental engineers, and geologists, as well as physicists, applied physicist and allied scientists that deal with various porous media problems.

Book Dynamics of Fluids in Porous Media

Download or read book Dynamics of Fluids in Porous Media written by Jacob Bear and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work by one of the world's foremost hydrologists presents a topic encountered in the many fields of science and engineering where flow through porous media plays a fundamental role. It is the standard work in the field, designed primarily for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of ground water hydrology, soil mechanics, soil physics, drainage and irrigation engineering, and petroleum and chemical engineering. It is highly recommended as well for scientists and engineers already working in these fields. Throughout this generously illustrated, richly detailed study, which includes a valuable section of exercises and answers, the emphasis is on understanding the phenomena occurring in porous media and on their macroscopic description. The book's chapter titles reveal its comprehensive coverage: Introduction, Fluids and Porous Matrix Properties, Pressures and Piezometric Head, The Fundamental Fluid Transport Equations in Porous Media, The Equation of Motion of a Homogeneous Fluid, Continuity and Conservation Equations for a Homogeneous Fluid, Solving Boundary and Initial Value Problems, Unconfined Flow and the Dupuit Approximation, Flow of Immiscible Fluids, Hydrodynamic Dispersion, and Models and Analogs. "Systematic and comprehensive . . . a book that satisfies the highest standards of excellence. . . . Will undoubtedly become the standard reference in this field." — R. Allen Freeze, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Water Resources Research.
