Download or read book Blindsight written by Peter Watts and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugo and Shirley Jackson award-winning Peter Watts stands on the cutting edge of hard SF with his acclaimed novel, Blindsight Two months since the stars fell... Two months of silence, while a world held its breath. Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune's orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever's out there isn't talking to us. It's talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route. So who do you send to force introductions with unknown and unknowable alien intellect that doesn't wish to be met? You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees x-rays and tastes ultrasound. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won't be needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called vampire, recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist—an informational topologist with half his mind gone—as an interface between here and there. Pray they can be trusted with the fate of a world. They may be more alien than the thing they've been sent to find. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: Dear Gratitude Seeker We are grateful you have found our "Big Grateful Heart: 52 Week Gratitude Journal" online. And we are thankful to you for reading on... Why Did We Create This Journal for You? After reading about the wonderful benefits of gratitude giving and researching on the same, we started to practice giving gratitude daily. We found to our delight that our overall moods have improved, and we are better able to deal with our daily grind without feeling like we are "dying" from stress. We also feel happier and found it easier to manage difficult situations. We started to look forward to each day with great joy rather than dread facing the things that we don't want to face in life. As great believers in the benefits of gratitude and how it can improve our lives, we have experimented with numerous ways to give more gratitude daily in order to make gratitude giving a part of our daily routine and a habit. As habits take time to form, we needed a sustainable way we could practice gratitude regularly. We wanted to be able to give thanks to everything that's important to us, however big or small, automatically. We wanted a quick method that we can integrate with ease into our daily lives. After sampling many ways of giving gratitude, we found that engaging in regular gratitude journaling is the most sustainable way for us to develop a habit of giving gratitude. Download or read book In the Time of the Butterflies written by Julia Alvarez and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2010-01-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, internationally bestselling author and literary icon Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies is "beautiful, heartbreaking and alive ... a lyrical work of historical fiction based on the story of the Mirabal sisters, revolutionary heroes who had opposed and fought against Trujillo." (Concepción de León, New York Times) Alvarez’s new novel, The Cemetery of Untold Stories, is coming April 2, 2024. Pre-order now! It is November 25, 1960, and three beautiful sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official state newspaper reports their deaths as accidental. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo’s dictatorship. It doesn’t have to. Everybody knows of Las Mariposas—the Butterflies. In this extraordinary novel, the voices of all four sisters--Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and the survivor, Dedé--speak across the decades to tell their own stories, from secret crushes to gunrunning, and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujillo’s rule. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage and love, and the human costs of political oppression. "Alvarez helped blaze the trail for Latina authors to break into the literary mainstream, with novels like In the Time of the Butterflies and How the García Girls Lost Their Accents winning praise from critics and gracing best-seller lists across the Americas."—Francisco Cantú, The New York Times Book Review "This Julia Alvarez classic is a must-read for anyone of Latinx descent." —Popsugar.com "A gorgeous and sensitive novel . . . A compelling story of courage, patriotism and familial devotion." —People "Shimmering . . . Valuable and necessary." —Los Angeles Times "A magnificent treasure for all cultures and all time.” —St. Petersburg Times "Alvarez does a remarkable job illustrating the ruinous effect the 30-year dictatorship had on the Dominican Republic and the very real human cost it entailed."—Cosmopolitan.com
Download or read book Gratitude Journal written by Smart Family and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch heaven." - Johannes Gaertner Everyone knows that positive changes in our life come after we begin to be grateful. A constant feeling of gratitude helps to improve our life and develops the habit of positive thinking. It is no secret that if a person focuses on something, he gets more. It is also no secret that a person will not have something new unless he is grateful for what he already has.But can we express gratitude? Are we often grateful for having our arms, legs, eyes, and the ability to walk, talk, and smile? Are we often thankful for having our beloved ones, clothes, and a roof over our heads? A lot of people don't have these things at all. When you write down that you are grateful for the past day, for the people around you, for the children, for the sun, and so on, your heart is filled with joy and your attention is focused on the positive. As a result, you get more energy! This is light, good life energy. Naturally, this affects your mood and sense of self. This diary was created to help you change your life for the better! All you need to do every day is to write down something for what you are grateful to God, the Universe, fate, your parents, children, beloved ones, friends, and so on. Keeping this diary will become the beginning of a positive transformation in your life. Rules for keeping a diary of gratitude In the first half of each page, you should write down what you are grateful for on this day. Who would you like to say thanks for? Try not to make the same recordings again. But if your certain your gratitude is immense, you can write it down every day. It is necessary to write the gratitude down slowly, pronouncing it in your mind. In the second half of the page you can record the following: Small daily victories. Write down, for example, what you have done during the day that makes you proud of yourself. Your small or large overcoming, for example, you might have said "No" to somebody (thus you built a border). You might have overcome your fear, for example, did whatever you were afraid of. You may write down any things that previously were unusual or difficult for you to complete. It is necessary to do so to concentrate positive energy in oneself, to increase self-esteem and the level of psychological satisfaction with oneself. Write down your conclusions, ideas, and thoughts. During the day, a person may have a multitude of thoughts or ideas, but if they are not materialized and not transformed into physical reality, such thoughts simply fly away. They need to be written down, so that later in your free time you could think them over well and analyze them. Write down your pleasant moments. The thing that made you smile or warmed your heart even for a minute during the day. It could be a fortuitous meeting, a compliment, jokes, quotes, sudden luck, etc. During the day you always have some pleasant moments and it is very important to see and remember them. Goals. Write down your daily goals and plans to achieve them. If you develop the habit of setting goals constantly and achieving them you will get tremendous success in life. Write down how you have been helpful to other people or to the world. Try to do something for other people or for the world every day and be sure to write it down. Keeping a diary meaningfully will give you an opportunity to clarify your view of life, understand your nature, and attract new people into your life, as well as situations, and circumstances aimed to reveal your inner potential and self-development. And you should know that the power of your thoughts is the highest magic in life! Be successful in your new life! This is an excellent and useful gift!
Download or read book The Varieties of Religious Experience written by William James and published by The Floating Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."

Download or read book The Poisonwood Bible written by Barbara Kingsolver and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize • An Oprah's Book Club Selection “Powerful . . . [Kingsolver] has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review The Poisonwood Bible, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, established Barbara Kingsolver as one of the most thoughtful and daring of modern writers. Taking its place alongside the classic works of postcolonial literature, it is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in Africa. The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability. Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation. Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.
