Book Photosensitivity of Planar Silica Waveguides and Bulk Silica to 157 nm Laser Radiation

Book excerpt: The photoinduced refractive-index changes in planar silica waveguides and bulk fused silica are reported for the first time at a record short wavelength of 157 nm. Selectively changing the refractive-index in these materials permits fabrication of complex two-dimensional photonic devices. In this report, the F2 laser is shown to induce strong one-photon photosensitivity responses in germanosilica and fused silica. Maximum index changes of 8.6 * 10-4 are photoinduced in 3% GeO2-doped planar waveguides at 157 nm after a radiation dose of 4.5 kJ/cm2. In UV grade fused silica (Corning 7940), an index change of 1.1 * 10-4 is observed after 1.2 kJ/cm2 of 157-nm laser radiation. For planar waveguides with low germanium doping the photosensitivity response at 157-nm is increased by an order of magnitude compared with irradiation at 193 nm. An even larger increase in the photosensitivity response (3 orders of magnitude) is observed for fused silica samples irradiated with 157-nm compared with 193-nm radiation. These rapid index changes are achieved without any of the preprocessing techniques used to increase the photosensitivity response of optical materials to longer wavelength sources (i.e. 248 nm, 193 nm). To measure the photoinduced-index changes, three precise methods are developed. Index changes in planar waveguides are determined from propagating mode angles coupled to the waveguide though a prism. The diffraction efficiency of photoimprinted Bragg gratings is used to determine the index modulation of the gratings in planar waveguides as well as fused silica. Lastly, the index changes in fused silica are determined from the diffraction pattern of a photoinduced long period grating.

Book Photosensitivity Responses and Bragg gratings in Optical Fibres Using 157nm F 2 Laser Radiation

Download or read book Photosensitivity Responses and Bragg gratings in Optical Fibres Using 157nm F 2 Laser Radiation written by Keith Richard Beckley and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports the first study of photosensitivity in optical fibre irradiated with 157nm laser radiation. The largest-per-pulse index changes reported to date were recorded in standard telecommunications fibre with a one-photon process being identified as the driving photosensitivity mechanism. Index changes of 3.5 $\times$ 10$\sp{-9}$ per pulse were registered at an irradiating fluence of 25mJ/cm$\sp2$. At 450mJ/cm$\sp2$, a 300% improvement in the per pulse index change was measured for 157nm radiation versus 193nm radiation. Increasing the germanium core concentration had negligible effect on the per pulse index change rate at 25mJ/cm$\sp2$. Fluences of 100mJ/cm$\sp2$ to 450mJ/cm$\sp2$ resulted in a premature index saturation due to a damage mechanism in the core and cladding of the fibre. A Bragg grating with a spectral width of 0.5nm and a 70% peak reflectivity was written in a hydrogen loaded fibre using a phase mask irradiated at a fluence of 360mJ/cm$\sp2$.

Book Bragg Gratings in Semiconductor Waveguides

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: with distinction, City University London, 50 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Bragg gratings are important devices for both optical communications and sensing. These devices are used to design very narrow band optical filters, which can be used in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). It is also perceived that Bragg gratings will be used to compensate the dispersion in modern fibre optic telecommunication networks. Semiconductor gratings are usually integrated into lasers to control the operating wavelength. City University Photonic Modelling Group is a world leading research group on the use of rigorous numerical techniques to design and optimise advanced photonic devices for optical communications. The research group has already achieved results on hypothetical one-dimensional (1-D) and realistic two-dimensional (2-D) structures. In this project a combination of three numerical methods has been used, all of which are rigorous, to simulate realistic three-dimensional (3-D) structures in semiconductor waveguides. The combination of these three accurate methods, the finite element method (FEM), the least squares boundary residual (LSBR) method and the transfer matrix method (TMM) turned out to be superior to the widely used coupled mode theory (CMT). The numerical study of different Bragg gratings shows interesting dependencies of the characteristics of the gratings on the different design parameters. The work was carried out for different mesh distributions, different numbers of mesh divisions and different computational parameters. Another focus of the work was on the stability of the transmission and reflection coefficients obtained from the LSBR program. Furthermore the effect of inaccuracy occurring during the fabrication process has been studied. The results of this work have been compared to results found by other groups and fellows. We can say that this proj
