Book Grasses and Forage Plants Vol 11

Download or read book Grasses and Forage Plants Vol 11 written by J. B. Killebrew and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grasses and Forage Plants, Vol. 11: Bulletin of the Agriculture Experiment Station of the University of Tennessee The Tennessee Experiment Station published, in 1892 and 1894, two bulletins on The Grasses of Tennessee, from the pen of Prof. F. damson-Scribner, at that time Botanist of the Station, now Agrostologist of the United States Department of Agriculture. Part I. of this work was a handy reference book of information as to the general character and quality of our grasses; Part II. was a handbook of the grasses of the State, with full descriptions and illustrations. The present publication is the first of a series of bulletins which will discuss the methods of cultivating and using the domesticated grasses and forage plants of Tennessee, of establishing and maintaining permanent meadows and of harvesting and using the various kinds of forage. It is designed thus to complete the former series. The Station has been fortunate in securing, to prepare this new series, the services of Col. J. B. Killebrew, A. M., Ph. D., probably the greatest authority in the South upon the culture and uses of grasses and forage plants, whose work on the grasses and forage plants of Tennessee, published in 1878, now entirely out of print, remained until the present time the best manual on the subject. The present work gives the result of twenty years' additional study and experience in the cultivation of grasses and forage plants. The analytical engravings of grasses in this Bulletin were made by Prof. F. Lamson-Scribner. A few of the larger cuts are from Scribner's translation of Haeckel's "True Grasses." The half tone engravings are from Tennessee and Southern sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.
