Book Grass Productivity An Introduction to Rational Grazing

Download or read book Grass Productivity An Introduction to Rational Grazing written by Dr. Robert C. Worstell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SIMPLE questions often help us to understand problems better; and I think it indispensable, at the beginning of this work, to ask a question which appears simple in the extreme: "What is grazing?" The answer is generally as follows: "Causing grass to be eaten by an animal." That is correct! But here is another answer which, to my mind, is more realistic: "Causing the grass and the animal to meet." Since this book is almost exclusively concerned with grazing by cattle, I propose the following definition to the reader, requesting him to allow it to become well impressed upon his mind: Grazing is the meeting of cow and grass. It is by satisfying as far as possible the demands of both parties that we will arrive at a rational grazing, which will provide us with maximum productivity on the part of the grass while at the same time allowing the cow to give optimum performance. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grass in Conservation in the United States As far back as records go into civilization's dawn, grass has been a solid base for agriculture. Through the centuries it has provided most of the forage for livestock feed and cereals for man's own food. In the United States in the past generation grass has gained new eminence as a tool in soil and water con servation. Today it occupies a dual role of production and protection in American agriculture. The withering drought and the financial depression of the 1930's triggered an agricultural revolution that brought forth a new national program to halt soil erosion and protect renewable natural resources. With it new grassland science emerged, and new grasses and legumes for forage grow on nearly half the land area of the United States. A return of about 17 billion dollars annually comes from the livestock and poultry that eat grasses, grains, hay, and silage. On the farms of America before 1930, grass was often looked upon as a resource of minor value. In the South and in the Great Plains, farmers grew mostly clean-tilled row crops and small grains. In most of the country, improved pastures occupied a position of minor importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Old Pro Turkey Hunter

Download or read book The Old Pro Turkey Hunter written by Gene Nunnery and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his life, Gene Nunnery was recognized as a master turkey hunter and an artisan who crafted unique, almost irresistible turkey calls. In The Old Pro Turkey Hunter, the vaunted sportsman shares over fifty years of personal experience in Mississippi and surrounding states, along with the decades-old wisdom of the huntsmen who taught him. Throughout the book, his stories make clear that turkey hunting is more than just killing the bird—it is about matching wits with a wild and savvy adversary. As Nunnery explains, “To me that’s what it’s all about: finding a wise old gobbler who will test your skill as a turkey hunter.” Through his stories, Nunnery reveals that the true reward for successful turkey hunting lies in winning the contest, not necessarily exterminating the foe. Real sportsmen know that every now and then the turkey should and will elude the hunter. As Nunnery looks back on his extensive career, he analyzes vast differences in practice, old and new. The shift, he decides, came during his last twenty years on the hunt, and that difference has only increased in the decades since this book was originally published. Michael O. Giles, Bass Pro staff team member, master turkey hunter, and award-winning outdoors writer and author of Passion of the Wild, writes a new foreword that brings the practice of turkey hunting into the present day. Filled with a tested mixture of common sense and specific examples of how master turkey hunters honor their harvest and heritage, The Old Pro Turkey Hunter is the perfect companion for the novice or the adept.

  • Release : 1961
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Grass and People written by Charles Morrow Wilson and published by Gainesville : University of Florida Press. This book was released on 1961 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since earliest Biblical times, grass has been a shaping factor in the history of mankind. The story of the companionship of grass and people is a chronicle of science, invention, experiment, and devotion; of the development of value and beauty; and of the conservation not only of land but of people. As a result of awakened interest since the 1930s, when the Dust Bowl brought the importance of grass so sharply into focus, some 1,700 hitherto unfamiliar varieties of grasses have been recognized. Many more will undoubtedly be brought to light through increasing use of university and government agricultural experiments.
