Book In Praise of Gentle People

Download or read book In Praise of Gentle People written by Alex Binney and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two intriguing murder mysteries in one. Lawrence Treman, the son of a wealthy British barrister, is sent by his father to a ranch in Kansas to 'toughen him up'. Lawrence reluctantly obeys his father's wishes under the threat of losing his inheritance, but is aggrieved to leave behind the love of his life, Estelle Lavine. The year is 1874 and the Civil War in America has long since finished, but not the day of the gunman in the untamed West. During his stay on the ranch, a number of cowboys are butchered under mysterious circumstances. The owner calls in an agent from the Pinkerton Detective Agency to try and solve the mystery. Lawrence falls under immediate suspicion because the killings did not start until he arrived at the ranch. As if that is not enough, detectives from Scotland Yard are called in to investigate a series of murders in Hertfordshire, Lawrence's home county in England. When the bodies are discovered on his father's estate, Lawrence again falls under suspicion there, the police accusing his father of sending him away to the Americas to avoid the clutches of the police. He is ordered to return to Britain by his father to answer the charges facing him there, but is shocked to learn that this will not be possible as his son is due to be hung in Kansas for the murder of the cowboys. In the meantime Estelle, the love of Lawrence's life, is being forced against her will to marry someone else.... Can Lawrence escape the hangman in the States and face the music back home? A taut thriller from the pen of Alex Binney.

Book The Oxford Dictionary of Idioms

Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of Idioms written by Judith Siefring and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that 'flavour of the month' originated in a marketing campaign in American ice-cream parlours in the 1940s, when a particular flavour would be specially promoted for a month at a time? And did you know that 'off the cuff' refers to the rather messy practice of writing impromptu notes on one's shirt cuff before speaking in public? These and many more idioms are explained and put into context in this second edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms. This vastly entertaining dictionary takes a fresh look at the idiomatic phrases and sayings that make English such a rich and intriguing language. A major new edition, it contains entries for over 5000 idioms, including 350 new entries and over 500 new quotations. The text has been updated to include many new idioms using the findings of the Oxford English Reading Programme, the biggest language research programme in the world. The entries are supported by a wealth of illustrative quotations from a wide range of sources and periods. For example: 'Rowling has not been asleep at the wheel in the three years since the last Potter novel, and I am pleased to report that she has not confused sheer length with inspiration.' - Guardian, 2003. 'I made the speech of a lifetime. I had them tearing up the seats and rolling in the aisles.' - P.G. Woodhouse, 1940. Many entries include boxed features which give more detailed background on the idiom in question. For example, did you know that 'taken aback' was adopted from nautical terminology, and described a ship unable to move forward because of a strong headwind pressing its sails back against the mast? The text has been entirely redesigned so that it is both elegant and easy to use. Anyone interested in the quirky side of the English language will have hours of fun browsing through this fascinating and informative volume.

Book Ireland s Wild Plants Myths Legends Folklore

Download or read book Ireland s Wild Plants Myths Legends Folklore written by Niall Mac Coitir and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Ireland there were 365 different parts to the body, and a different plant to cure each part. So the wild plants of Ireland are bound up in our culture and folklore from the earliest times. To arry a four-leaved shamrock brings luck in gambling, while putting nine ivy leaves under her pillow means a girl will dream of her future husband. Here plants are described in seasonal order, a perspective dating back to our ancestors. Different aspects of plant folklore are examined following a brief history of traditional herbal medicine in Ireland. Included are their roles in magical protection, in charms and spells (especially for love!), as emblems in children's games, and in Irish place names.
