Book The Effect of Oxygen in Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Effect of Oxygen in Coal Classic Reprint written by David White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effect of Oxygen in Coal This paper is the result of a comparative study Of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number Of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. Book The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent Classic Reprint written by S. W. Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent I. Present 'methods of Coal Analysis. - There are two processes in vogue at the present time for the chemical examination of coal; one is the ultimate, and the other is the proximate method Of analysis. In the first the organic or combustible part Of the coal is separated into its elemental constituents, carbon, hydrogen, Oxygen, and nitrogen. The mineral or non-combustible portion is separately determined under two items as ash and moisture. In the proximate method the organic material is separated into two divisions, one being that portion which under high temperature and out Of Contact with the air passes Off in the gaseous form, and the other that part which remains behind as the non-volatile or coke-form ing carbon. Each procedure has doubtless come into use as the result Of a specific demand. For example, the engineer needed the data from which he could calculate the total heat of the coal and, in arriving at a heat balance, he must also have at hand any negative factors charge able to the fuel, such as the quantity and character of the gaseous products Of combustion. These items, therefore, would call for the data furnished by the ultimate methods of analysis. The proximate method was developed as a natural accompaniment of the gas and coke industries, since it furnished in either case an index of the yield which might be expected from a given coal. Formerly, also, the quantity Of volatile matter was made to serve as an index of the grade or quality of a coal. Thus the data from proximate analyses have been put into the form of fuel ratios or the ratio of the non-volatile to the volatile part of the coal, such ratios supposedly serving as an indication of the general class or type to which the coal belonged. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Methods Employed in Coal Analysis The methods found in this committee's report (2) have become known as the Official Methods. Their suggestions for the sampling of coal are those, in the main, which are used in ore sampling. The Official Method for the determination of Moisture is as follows: Dry a one gram sample of the coal in an open porcelain or platinum crucible at 104-1070 for an hour, best in a double-walled bath containing toluene. Cool in a desiccator and weigh covered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Engineering Study of the Coals on the Chicago Market Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Engineering Study of the Coals on the Chicago Market The samples of coal for analysis were very kindly presented to the writer by the City Vuel Co., since purchased by the Peabody Coal Co., whose yards are located at Wentworth Avenue and 4oth Street., Chicago. The samples were takeh from the different coal piles around the yards one warm day in February and were quite wet from.the melted snow so that it was thought advisable to allow them to stand for a couple of Weeks before grinding for analysis, in order that any undue moisture Which might have been absorbed by the coal during its exposure to the snow and water, might dry out normally. Although it is preferable to take large samples and quarter them down to the amount desired for analysis, it was not done in this case owing to lack of working and storage space. However, two or three small lumps having as near the average composition of the pile as c uld be told by inspection, were taken, and the state and district from which each.coal came noted. The most of the sawples taken came from Illinois, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in Which states, by the way, the largest share of the coal of t the United States is mined. In 1900, Pennsylvania ranked first in coal production, Illinois second, and West Virginia third. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal: Part One, Coals of the Monongahela Formation or Upper Productive Coal Measures, Part Two, Chemical Analyses and Calorific Tests of the Clarion, Lower Kittanning, Middle Kittanning and Upper Freeport Coals A feature of this part of the report is the new assignment made the Pomeroy seam. Heretofore that has always been regarded as the Pittsburg. But recent studies have demonstrated that the coal in question lies above the Pittsburg seam and is the equivalent of the Redstone of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Credit for this determination belongs very largely to Mr. D. D. Condit. Part Two consists of analyses and calorific tests of four seams of the Allegheny Formation or Lower Productive Coal Measures. These are the Clarion. Lower Kittanning, Middle Kittanning and Upper Freeport coals. Accompanying the results will be found sections showing the thickness and structure of the seam where sampled. In the chapter by Professor Lord, Interpretation of the Chemical and Physical Tests on Coal, the value of coal as shown by its chemical. Analysis and the effects of the different constituents upon its fuel value are discussed in some detail, as are also the total and available heating values of coals. Book Method of Least Squares Applied to Estimating Errors in Coal Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Method of Least Squares Applied to Estimating Errors in Coal Analysis Classic Reprint written by J. D. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method of Least Squares Applied to Estimating Errors in Coal Analysis In this paper, which is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the increase of efficiency in; the utilization of fuel, the authors have sought to describe a definite method for estimating the probable limits Of error in analyzing samples of coal, and to show how this method, that of least squares, should be applied. Bailey 0 has shown that the method of least squares is applicable to the problem of sampling coal; it can be used to determine the limits of accuracy of sampling and for preparing standardized methods of sampling, but so far as the authors know the accuracy of the ordinary methods oi analyzing coal has not yet been investi gated by a mathematical method. It is customary to estimate the limits of accuracy of analysis by observing the agreement of duplicate determinations; that is, from general experience with a given kind of analysis. Hence, as some sets of duplicates are found to agree more closely than others, this question arises: What is the widest variation and What is about the average variation reasonably to be expected? Or, in other Words the question is: What is the magnitude of the probable error of a single determination and what is the maximum error to be expected, say, once in determinations?
