Book excerpt: Institutions of higher education use their website to share mission statements that communicate their identities to stakeholders. A content analysis examining the presence and frequency of components related to stakeholders, organizational identity, and organizational image of the mission statements of the U.S. News and World Top 200 National Universities and Top 200 Liberal Arts Colleges was conducted. Stakeholder theory and theories on organizational identity and organizational image were used to guide the study. Some significant differences in the presence of the examined components in mission statements of national universities and liberal arts colleges were identified. Specifically, differences exist between institutional types as to the types of stakeholders named, geographic scope of institutional influence, core competencies, strategies, and products outlined within the sampled mission statements. Theoretical implications for the continued use of Stakeholder theory and theories of organizational identity within the field of higher education and among strategic communication scholars, as well as practical implications for the same, are discussed. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings, as well as areas of future research, are discussed.

In the end, it may really be the power of inclusion on college campuses that leads to many of the educational goals that we yearn for in student growth: the formal and informal social interactions, bonded in reflective learning, that help build social and academic success. In this we can celebrate together, especially those of us who have romanticized so many “bright college years.” This text is a response to a call for existential exploration as an attempt to critically revivify our understanding of the sorority/fraternity experience as it contributes specifically to students’ identity development and learning. These elite enclaves are also historically white, allowing many white Americans to safeguard their privileges by using public schools to help their children enter top colleges. That’s changing, however, as Asian American professionals increasingly move into wealthy suburban areas to give their kids that same leg up for their college applications and future careers. As Natasha Warikoo shows in Race at the Top, white and Asian parents alike will do anything to help their children get to the top of the achievement pile. She takes us into the affluent suburban East Coast school she calls “Woodcrest High,” with a student body about one-half white and one-third Asian American. There were about one hundred participants and 45 written contributions from Europe, the US, Canada and Australia. People with different disciplinary backgrounds, geographers, historians, sociologists, economists and planners among them, attended, as did a few university administrators and local government officials. The intricate relationships between universities and their cities were intensively debated from the perspective of possible contributions by the university to city life as well as from the angle of the city as a milieu that affects the university's functioning. There were theoretical and historical papers, and a series of case studies, some of them comparative, as well as proposals and descriptions of efforts to improve city-university relations. It was a fruitful occasion for many on account of the diversity of experience brought together for the purpose of a debate on a matter of common interest. The vari ous university settings within Amsterdam were visited during a guided tour that pro vided food for thought on the matters under discussion by means of a living example.
