Book excerpt: Austrian sociologist Otto Neurath developed the Isotype system of pictograms in the early 1930s as a way to communicate complex information in visual form. Appearing in a variety of media, including books, posters, and films, it was designed to inform ordinary citizens about their place in the world. Isotype is the first comprehensive account of this seminal movement in the history of visual communication. Featuring new research, including previously unseen visual material, this long-overdue account traces the development of the Isotype system from its birth in prewar Vienna, through a wartime shift of production to the Netherlands, and finally to 1940s England, where the Isotype Institute continued to produce work until 1971. Isotype documents the visual system's worldwide influence, including its educational uses by the United States, Soviet Russia, and Africa.

Download or read book The Infographic written by Murray Dick and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of infographics and data visualization as a cultural phenomenon, from eighteenth-century print culture to today's data journalism. Infographics and data visualization are ubiquitous in our everyday media diet, particularly in news—in print newspapers, on television news, and online. It has been argued that infographics are changing what it means to be literate in the twenty-first century—and even that they harmonize uniquely with human cognition. In this first serious exploration of the subject, Murray Dick traces the cultural evolution of the infographic, examining its use in news—and resistance to its use—from eighteenth-century print culture to today's data journalism. He identifies six historical phases of infographics in popular culture: the proto-infographic, the classical, the improving, the commercial, the ideological, and the professional. Dick describes the emergence of infographic forms within a wider history of journalism, culture, and communications, focusing his analysis on the UK. He considers their use in the partisan British journalism of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century print media; their later deployment as a vehicle for reform and improvement; their mass-market debut in the twentieth century as a means of explanation (and sometimes propaganda); and their use for both ideological and professional purposes in the post–World War II marketized newspaper culture. Finally, he proposes best practices for news infographics and defends infographics and data visualization against a range of criticism. Dick offers not only a history of how the public has experienced and understood the infographic, but also an account of what data visualization can tell us about the past.

Book Modern Man in the Making

Download or read book Modern Man in the Making written by Otto Neurath and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Neurath?s famous Modern Man in the Making, first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1939, captures and describes the state of the world in the 1930s by using text and figurative illustrations. From 1925 onwards, Neurath and his team had worked on a new visual language termed Isotype? (International System of Typographic Picture Education). At a time that saw the rise of new mass media making hitherto unthinkable amounts of information available, Neurath felt the need for a systematic visualization explaining facts, statistic data and comparative numbers in simple ways. The book can be seen as one of the most influential predecessors of today?s ever-present infographics. Its mission was to analyze the fundamental trends in the social, political and economic life of humanity.? The topics covered in the book include diverse social issues of the time such as mortality, health, employment, trade, education, mobility, migration and demographics.0Modern Man in the Making shows Neurath?s democratic endeavor to make knowledge intelligible and available to all. It is a reminder of graphic art?s ability to inform and create context instead of presenting aesthetic qualities only. The book has inspired generations of designers and led to sometimes peculiar imitations and further developments. This pivotal historical picture-text book is made available again as a reprint of the original publication in the series XX The Century of Print at a time in which new media force designers ever more so to break down complex data into easily comprehensible depictions.

Book Empiricism and Sociology

Download or read book Empiricism and Sociology written by M. Neurath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the last day of his life, Otto Neurath had given help to a Chinese philosopher who was writing about Schlick. Only an hour before his death he said to me: "Nobody will do such a thing for me." My answer then was: "Never mind, you have Bilston, isn't that better?" There were con sultations in new housing schemes, an exhibition, and hopes for a fruitful relationship of longer duration. I did not dream at that time that I would one day work on a book like this. The idea came from Horace M. Kallen, of the New School for Social Research, New York, years later; to encourage me he sent me his selection from William James' writings. Later I met Robert S. Cohen. Carnap had sent him to me with the message: "If you want to find out what my political views were in the twenties and thirties, read Otto Neurath's books and articles of that time; his views were also mine." In this way Robert Cohen became ac quainted with Otto Neurath. Even more: he became interested; and when I asked him, would he help me as an editor of an Otto N eurath volume, he agreed at once. In previous years I had already asked a number of Otto Neurath's friends to write down for me what they especially remembered about him.

Book The Art of the Text

Download or read book The Art of the Text written by Susan R Harrow and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of the Text contributes to the fast-developing dialogue between textual studies and visual culture studies. It focuses on the processes through which writers think and readers respond visually and, in essays by researchers in literature, screen and visual studies, the volume explores the visuality of the literary and non-literary text, with a sustained focus on French material of the later nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Visuality is appraised here not as a state, but as a set of processes of adaptation, resistance, negotiation, and transformation. By reading visually, the contributors here reactivate the visual-textual relations of canonical texts - from Romanticism to Naturalism, Surrealism to high Modernism; from film to fan literature, television to picture language.
