Download or read book Theater of Operations written by Zainab Bahrani and published by P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition catalogue, accompanying the major building-wide exhibition Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991-2011, includes four new commissioned texts by scholars of Iraqi art Zainab Bahrani, Rijin Sahakian, and Nada Shabout, as well as a media-focused critique from McKenzie Wark. The book will also feature essays from our curators Ruba Katrib and Peter Eleey, as well as critical reproductions from contemporaneous media artifacts, ranging from the Baghdad Diaries--the personal diaries during Iraqi occupation and sanction of artist Nuha Al-Radi--as well as entries from the still-anonymous blogger Riverbend's Baghdad Burning blog chronicling her time living under occupation, as well as texts from Serge Daney, Jean Baudrillard. As this conflict was the first to disseminate via a 24hr televised news cycle, this publication examines the impact of this period of ongoing conflict and its pervasive effects on visual culture.
Download or read book Dot Dot Dot 10 written by Stuart Bailey and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journal whose very name promises more to come delivers two issues this season. There aren't too many places to find intelligent, passionate, and witty writing about the past, present, and future of visual culture. Dot Dot Dot, the brilliant journal edited by Stuart Bailey and Peter Bilak, is one of the few we've found, and we're happy to be able to present it in our catalog. Issue 10, the composite issue, collects the best pieces from the previous issues into one new one. In the first issue Dot Dot Dot laid out a statement of intent. Issue 10 will be the answer to that intent. It can only be answered with conviction now, in hindsight, after the necessary mistakes and false trails. So making this compilation issue is not really a retrospective act, but more the logical form for the next steps.

Download or read book Dot Dot Dot 7 written by Stuart Bailey and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2004-02-25 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dot Dot Dot is not your father's design magazine -- a high-gloss tombstone with decontextualized, overproduced work by the "usual suspects." Instead, what you'll find is a groundbreaking journal that fills a longstanding gap in graphic arts publishing: a venue for creative, interdisciplinary journalism on subjects that affect the way we think about and make design. We're proud to add it to our growing catalog of books and journals. For each issue, Dot Dot Dot invites a multidiscipllinary group of contributors to both write and design pieces about the past, present, and future of visual culture. Smart, passionate, and imaginatively designed, Dot Dot Dot is for graphic designers and anyone interested in the creative practice of the visual arts. Issue 7 includes "The Problem with Posters" by Rob Giampietro, "Mexico 1968/Rotterdam 2003" by Peter Bilak, "'Landy's (Failed) Gesture' and the General Intellect" by J.J. King, "The Every Day Story of Flesh-Eating, Blood-Sucking Freaks" by Steve Rushton (with John Russell), "Eno and the Long Now" by Michael Bracewell (with Brian Eno and Lucy McKenzie), and "Writing on Money" by Paul Elliman, among others.

Download or read book Understanding Diversity Through Novels and Picture Books written by Liz Knowles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Diversity Through Novels and Picture Books goes beyond the usual multicultural lists and looks at the wide expanse of the diversity of cultures and lifestyles impacting children's lives in America today and identifies good books to have in library collections for them to read. Included are annotated titles with discussion questions from all of the identified cultures and subcultures and annotated teacher/librarian resources, print- and Web-based, as well as an excellent list of topical annotated journal articles. Grades 4-8. Knowles and Smith examine current research on diversity and multiculturalism. They move away from the traditional aspects of multicultural education (food, fashion, folktales, festivals, and famous people) to a focus on novels and pictures books, and realistic fiction to show children with diversity issues that there are others in similar positions. The issue of authenticity (whether the author of the book should be of that culture or merely familiar with the culture) is discussed. Topics include: Ethnicities (Asian, Latino/Hispanic, African/Black, Native American, White/European, Bi/Multiracial), Exceptionalities, Ageism, Socioeconomic Status, Sexual Orientation, Gender, and Religion. The authors provide this valuable resource for libraries, schools, and communities that wish to utilize literature to help diverse students walk in the shoes of others and to match books to children and young adults to heighten understanding and acceptance. Grades 4-8.
