Book Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables

Download or read book Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables written by S.A.M.H. Naqvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Horticultural Crops, Fruits and Vegetables (FV) are of primary - portance as the key source of essential components in an adequate and balanced human diet. FV have supported largely the daily food requirement of mankind since ages and even before man learned to grow cereal crops systematically. Over the years, growing FV has been the mainstay of rural economy and has emerged as an indispensable part of agriculture world over, offering farmers a wide range of crops in varied topography and climate. In certain parts of the world, FV are the major dietary staple. Apart from being a rich source of vitamins and minerals, this sector also contributes significantly in economy of the region or the nation. The increased income from per unit area of FV is far ahead and can not be compared with that of cereal crops. A recent survey by the Economist revealed that the world population has - creased by 90 % in the past 40 years while food production has increased only by 25 % per head. With an additional 1. 5 billion mouth to feed by 2020, farmers worldwide have to produce 39 % more. Looking at the load of the future food requirement, the global increased production of FV during last few years has absorbed the additional food requirement and accordingly the eating habits are also changing and shifting - wards more consumption of these commodities worldwide.

Book Wine Science

Download or read book Wine Science written by Jamie Goode and published by Mitchell Beazley. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revolutionary book is the only indepth reference to detail the processes, developments, and factors affecting the science of winemaking. Jamie Goode, a highly regarded expert on the subject, skilfully opens up this complex subject and explains the background to the various processes involved and the range of issues surrounding their uses. He reports on the vital progress in winemaking research that has been made in the last decade and explains the practical application of science with reference to the range of winemaking techniques used around the world, as well as viticultural practices, organics and ecology, and lifestyle influences. Written in a uniquely accessible style, the book is divided into three sections covering the vineyard, the winery and human interaction with wine. It also features over 80 illustrations and photographs to help make even the most complex topics clear, straightforward and easy to understand.

Book Biology of Microorganisms on Grapes in Must and in Wine

Download or read book Biology of Microorganisms on Grapes in Must and in Wine written by Helmut König and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the book begins with the description of the diversity of wine-related microorganisms, followed by an outline of their primary and energy metabolism. Subsequently, important aspects of the secondary metabolism are dealt with, since these activities have an impact on wine quality and off-flavour formation. Then chapters about stimulating and inhibitory growth factors follow. This knowledge is helpful for the growth management of different microbial species. The next chapters focus on the application of the consolidated findings of molecular biology and regulation the functioning of regulatory cellular networks, leading to a better understanding of the phenotypic behaviour of the microbes in general and especially of the starter cultures as well as of stimulatory and inhibitory cell-cell interactions during wine making. In the last part of the book, a compilation of modern methods complete the understanding of microbial processes during the conversion of must to wine. This broad range of topics about the biology of the microbes involved in the vinification process could be provided in one book only because of the input of many experts from different wine-growing countries.

Book Effects of High Temperature on Grape Powdery Mildew Erysiphe Necator

Download or read book Effects of High Temperature on Grape Powdery Mildew Erysiphe Necator written by Peggy Backup and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epidemics of powdery mildew, arguably the most important disease of grapevines worldwide, are driven by moderate temperatures (21 to 30 C), but high temperatures can decrease growth and sporulation or eradicate the fungus. Using controlled environments, I investigated the response of 3 stages of Erysiphe necator's life cycle to 8 temperatures at 12 exposure times (1/4 to 24 h). Isolates of E. necator from 4 California production regions were used to evaluate the effects of heat treatments in 2 C increments from 30 to 44 C on conidial germination, colony size, and conidiospore production. After a 24-h exposure to 30, 32, or 34 C, conidia continued to germinate and colonies grew and sporulated. Lethal effects started at 36 or 38 C; lethal exposure times decreased with increasing temperature. At 44 C, less than 1 1/2 h was lethal. Sublethal exposure times that delayed colony growth were also detected. There were interactions among temperature, exposure time, and colony age, but not with source of isolate. The pathogen survived, grew, and reproduced at higher temperatures than previously reported; exposure time was as important as temperature in defining lethal and sublethal conditions. My results require verification with field studies to assess combined effects of repetitive exposure to high temperature and other environmental stresses.

Book Epidemiology of Grape Powdery Mildew Uncinula Necator in the Willamette Valley

Download or read book Epidemiology of Grape Powdery Mildew Uncinula Necator in the Willamette Valley written by Tyrone W. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important disease of Vitis vinifera production in Oregon and all other commercial growing regions is powdery mildew of grape, caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Uncinula necator (Schwein.) Burril. Grape production can be characterized as a long-term investment in the establishment and maintenance of the vineyard. Establishment times have been reduced with the use of plastic vine shelters, but powdery mildew disease pressure within vine shelters had been an unaddressed issue. Control of the pathogen requires frequent spray applications and costly cultural management of the grape canopy. Industry interest in forecasting programs have shown promise in regulating spray applications to times when they are most effective, or needed. The timing of when to begin spray programs is believed to be a point of weakness in the forecasting programs currently available for grape powdery mildew. The influence of vine shelter use on the development of powdery mildew was investigated in the field during the 1998 and 1999 growing season. Industry standard installations of various brands of vine shelters were tested against modified installations for both incidence and severity of Uncinula necator infection. The industry standard installation of 76 cm high tubes hilled with 8 cm of soil at the bottom to prevent airflow, were effective in reducing the incidence of powdery mildew in both field seasons. Disease reduction was associated with prolonged temperatures above 36°C and the exclusion of infective spores by the artificial barrier created by the vine shelters. The effectiveness of three forecasting programs for predicting the initial spray application was investigated for three seasons. Actual disease onset dates were determined by using trap leaves or plants. The forecasting programs consistently predicted initial spray dates between 31 and 44 days prior to the detection of powdery mildew with the trapping system. Modifications to the existing forecasting programs were attempted to adjust the forecasting programs to more closely predict the actual detected disease onset dates. The UC-Davis program performed the best over the three years of the study, but improvements will be necessary for an adequate forecasting program in the region. Flag shoots were reported for the first time in Oregon.
