Book The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee

Download or read book The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee written by Samuel W. Odell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee: A Comparison and Contrast of the Deeds and Characters of the Two Great Leaders in the Civil War; With Introductory Reminiscences Much has been written about both Grant and Lee and the parts that each bore in the bloody strife that so nearly wrecked the Union, but, we believe, there are elements of novelty and interest in taking these two great master-spirits of the war, and, in the same book, analyzing their careers; comparing them step by step, to find what elements of similarity or dissimilarity existed between them, and wherein each succeeded or failed, and, if possible, to determine why. Such, at least, is the aim of the present work. The utmost care has been used to verify all facts and figures from the very highest authorities. No judgment has been passed on any person or event without weighing carefully all the evidence, and with a desire to be entirely fair and impartial. Special pains have been taken to avoid stirring up any spirit of controversy, and to judge each side in the great conflict only as the facts warrant. The publishers fully realize that in a narrative of so intense a struggle as the Civil War, where great bitterness was engendered, not only between the two opponents, but, also, even among some of the rival commanders on the same side, whose interests may have come in conflict, that any opinion that may be expressed about a leader, or his acts, is liable to be dissented from by those who may be his special friends or adherents. Book Ulysses S Grant Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ulysses S Grant Classic Reprint written by Franklin Spencer Edmonds and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses S. Grant Amid the multitude of biographies of General Grant, written in the main by those who knew him with some degree of intimacy, the appearance of another may seem to demand explanation, and even apology. I cannot lay claim either to participation in the stirring history of his times, or to personal acquaintance with my subject; but each generation requires the service of its own historians and biographers, in order to bring the message of the past to bear on the present; and this book is the result of an honest attempt to record a life that is full of significance for our own era. The time has now come when the great struggle for national existence, known as the American Civil War, can be studied without passion or prejudice. Within the last few years, many volumes of personal reminiscences and letters have appeared, and the correspondence of the leaders on both sides has been made available. The primary sources of information, therefore, are approaching completion. Even with this wealth of material, it has not always been easy to determine the exact truth with reference to some of the facts of Grant's life. Book The True Ulysses S Grant Classic Reprint

Download or read book The True Ulysses S Grant Classic Reprint written by Charles King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Ulysses S. Grant When invited to prepare the manuscript for this work the writer's first impulse was to decline. The subject, however, had for long years commanded his deep interest and much investigation. His admiration of the character and his study of the career of Ulysses Grant equalled probably those of his eminent biog raphers, and finally, in the belief that there were virtues in the true Grant to which full prominence had not been given, possibly because Grant himself would have regarded them as matters of course, there came the desire to write of our great commander as he seemed to one of the least of these his subaltems, and from the fulness of a store of information garnered through reading and hearing for half a century this memoir practically wrote itself. The real work came when it had to be planed and pruned to the prescribed limits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Agriculture in Antebellum St Louis

Download or read book Agriculture in Antebellum St Louis written by Pamela K. Sanfilippo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture in Antebellum St. Louis: A Special History Study This special history study examines that perception by exploring the prevailing agricultural conditions both at White Haven and in St. Louis County during the antebellum period between 1840 and 1860. Although Grant faced numerous challenges while he farmed his father-in-law's estate, his situation did not differ greatly from that experienced by many other farmers. Unless we choose to identify each of them as failures and unsuited to their positions, the perception of Grant as a failure during these years needs to change. The Grants' experiences at White Haven can be better understood when placed within the context of the wider St. Louis community. General comments about the city during the 18405 and 18505 are provided as background for the discussion of farm life during the antebellum period in St. Louis County. The Grants and the Dents frequently interacted with residents, merchants and others in the city, and would have observed and participated in the many activities and events that transformed St. Louis from a frontier town to a busy metropolis during this period. S Grant The history of the United States, or of the world at large, does not record a more honorable, chivalrous, and courageous soldier, statesman, and gentleman than U. S. Grant. If the following story of his life serves to inspire in its young readers something of General Grant's high sense of honor, truthfulness, modesty, his thoughtful ness for others, his dislike of all that was coarse, his respect for older people - and not only as a boy, but as General of all the armies of the United States, and during two terms as President - the writer will have achieved the inspiration that came from his own study of the life of this splendid American. Download or read book The Story of Ulysses S Grant for Young Readers Classic Reprint written by Alma Holman Burton and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Ulysses S. Grant, for Young Readers Jesse Root Grant was a young tanner who lived in Clermont County, Ohio. It is said that his ancestors belonged to a Scottish clan whose motto was: "Stand fast, stand firm, stand sure." His great-grandfather, "honest Matthew" Grant, landed on Nantasket Beach, in Massachusetts, in 1630, just ten years after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. His grandfather was a soldier in the French and Indian war, and his father was a lieutenant in the Revolution. Jesse Grant was proud of his ancestors. He tried to honor their memory by his own upright life and often said that "Stand fast, stand firm, stand sure " was just as good a motto for an American as for a Scotchman. He was so honest and industrious that he was respected by all who knew him. After he had saved enough money to build a house he married pretty Hannah Simpson. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses S. Grant: Conversations and Unpublished Letters Arrangements having been made through the usual diplomatic channels to present General and Mrs. Grant to their majesties, the King and Queen of Den mark, we drove, on Wednesday, July io, to Bernstorff Castle, one of the royal summer residences, ten miles from Copen hagen, where we arrived at five o'clock P. M., the appointed hour. The interview between General and Mrs. Grant and their Danish majesties lasted an hour, during which various subjects relating to the United States and Denmark were dis cussed. The latter were surprised at the general's accurate knowledge of Danish history, politics, resources, etc. Some flat tering remarks were made by the king and queen in reference to the writer which need not be repeated here. Book Ulysses S Grant

Download or read book Ulysses S Grant written by Hamlin Garland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses S. Grant: His Life and Character This book is not to be taken as a military history of General Grant. It is not, perhaps, everything that is understood by the word "biography," but it tells the story of Ulysses Grant from his birth to his death. It is an attempt at characterization. It has not been my intention to set down all the significant words and deeds of General Grant, nor to analyze all the official acts of President Grant, but to present the man Grant as he stands to-day before unbiased critics. If I succeed in making the reader a little better acquainted with his great and singular character, I shall feel that my larger purpose has been carried out. In order that I might secure the fullest understanding of my subject, I have visited every town wherein Ulysses Grant lived long enough to leave a distinct impression upon its citizens. This search for first-hand material took me at the start to southern Ohio, to Georgetown, his boyhood home, and to Ripley, and to Maysville, Kentucky, where he attended school in his youth. I also studied the records on file in the adjutant's office at West Point, and the newspaper files in Washington, St. Louis, New York, Cincinnati, Detroit, Louisville, Chicago, Springfield, Galena, Cairo, Memphis, Vicksburg, New Orleans, Richmond, Monterey, and Mexico City. In all of these cities I sought for and obtained interviews from those who had known Ulysses Grant personally and had some significant message to impart. In order to realize the Mexican battle-fields, I visited Monterey, Vera Cruz, Jalapa, Perote, Puebla, Contreras, Churubusco, El Molino del Rey, and San Cosme.
