Book Granny s Momma s Mine and More

Download or read book Granny s Momma s Mine and More written by Kay Sandifer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I learned to cook from my grandmother and my mother, so that is where I want to begin this cookbook. My grandmother was legally blind. She recognized all seven of her grandchildren and her children by our walks and our voices. Needless to say, she could not see the numbers or notches on measuring cups or bowls, but that did not hinder her from being a great cook. When people have asked me for recipes, it has always been hard for me because recipes require measurements, and I never saw anyone measure anything! I watched my mother and grandmother and my aunt Betty just smidgen and pinch their way right through the kitchen to countless great-tasting meals and desserts. This is one reason my cookbook has taken so long to produce. I had to start measuring! Not an easy thing to do when your natural instinct is to just go to the kitchen and start cooking. Life was hard for my granny, but she knew how to love her family despite all her struggles and believe me, she had plenty on her plate. Granny loved her family, and she made sure that all of us understood the importance of family. She kept us all close. One important way Granny kept the family close was through meals. We always had Sunday dinners and holiday meals together. Cooking was her love language with her family. Granny was proof that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. When we love something that we do so much and the people that we do it for even more, then most all things are possible. Granny passed this down to my mother, to me, and to the rest of her family. I can see her in my mind's eye standing over her kitchen counter, with a kitchen towel hanging over her shoulder, cooking and pouring herself a cup of coffee with her thumb inside the cup so she knew when her cup was full. I am blessed to have family who are so much more to me than just relatives. They are some of my dearest friends. My sister, Bea, and I, my cousins Vickie, Terri, Glenda, and Rena, along with my granny, momma, and aunt Betty all used to get together at Aunt Betty's house on each of our birthdays. We shared food and lots of love and laughter. Now that my grandmother and mother have passed away, we don't celebrate birthdays the same, but we still try to celebrate each other's birthdays together. Being a close family was important to her, and it is important to all of us. I hope you enjoy reading the little stories in the cookbook and enjoy making and eating the recipes. Live. Love. Laugh. And cook!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hugh Acheson (now a James Beard Award winner as a chef and author) moved from Ottowa to Georgia, who knew that he would woo his adopted home state and they would embrace him as one of their own? In 2000, following French culinary training on both coasts, Hugh opened Five and Ten in Athens, a college town known for R.E.M., and the restaurant became a spotlight for his exciting interpretation of traditional Southern fare. Five and Ten became a favorite local haunt as well as a destination—Food & Wine named Hugh a “Best New Chef” and at seventy miles away, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution named Five and Ten the best restaurant in Atlanta. Then came the five consecutive James Beard nominations. Now, after opening two more restaurants and a wine shop, Hugh is ready to share 120 recipes of his eclectic, bold, and sophisticated flavors, inspired by fresh ingredients. In A New Turn in the South, you’ll find libations, seasonal vegetables that take a prominent role, salads and soups, his prized sides, and fish and meats—all of which turn Southern food on its head every step of the way. Hugh’s recipes include: Oysters on the Half Shell with Cane Vinegar and Chopped Mint Sauce, shucked and left in their bottom shells; Chanterelles on Toast with Mushrooms that soak up the flavor of rosemary, thyme, and lemon; Braised and Crisped Pork Belly with Citrus Salad—succulent and inexpensive, but lavish; Yellow Grits with Sautéed Shiitakes, Fried Eggs, and Salsa Rossa—a stunning versatile condiment; Fried Chicken with Stewed Pickled Green Tomatoes—his daughters’ favorite dish; and Lemon Chess Pies with Blackberry Compote—his go-to classic Southern pie with seasonal accompaniment. With surprising photography full of Hugh’s personality, and pages layered with his own quirky writing and sketches, he invites you into his community and his innovative world of food—to add new favorites to your repertoire.

Grandma Jones is the matriarch in our family that passed down her traditions of simple, yet tasty, down home cooking. In Grandma Jones' Kitchen, family favorite recipes are shared - many from Grandma Jones and a lot from other family members too. Some recipes date back to the 30's and 40's. Others are treasured recipes gathered over more recent years. Included here are almost 70 recipes including: -Copper Pennies -'More' -Marshmallow Delight -Aunt Melba's Lemon Cake -One Egg Cake -Pear Honey ...and more! We can't share our hillbilly heritage without talking about moonshine and how a moonshine legacy started this whole branch of the family. Papa Goss and his little side business from the holler in Arkansas is the magic ingredient that got Bea and Casey together - and the prodigious numbers of offspring are grateful for that. Cooking on a wood stove...that's how Grandma learned to cook. That's her stove that's on the cover. Also included is Hazel's Spice of Life - a Vintage Daze Short Story. If you like old time cooking, or reading family memories, you'll enjoy this tribute to Beatrice Jones (1917-2003), the Grandma Jones we all love and miss.
