Download or read book Blue Texas written by Max Krochmal and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the other Texas, not the state known for its cowboy conservatism, but a mid-twentieth-century hotbed of community organizing, liberal politics, and civil rights activism. Beginning in the 1930s, Max Krochmal tells the story of the decades-long struggle for democracy in Texas, when African American, Mexican American, and white labor and community activists gradually came together to empower the state's marginalized minorities. At the ballot box and in the streets, these diverse activists demanded not only integration but economic justice, labor rights, and real political power for all. Their efforts gave rise to the Democratic Coalition of the 1960s, a militant, multiracial alliance that would take on and eventually overthrow both Jim Crow and Juan Crow. Using rare archival sources and original oral history interviews, Krochmal reveals the often-overlooked democratic foundations and liberal tradition of one of our nation's most conservative states. Blue Texas remembers the many forgotten activists who, by crossing racial lines and building coalitions, democratized their cities and state to a degree that would have been unimaginable just a decade earlier--and it shows why their story still matters today.

Lilly is dismayed that Rosalie has disrupted her household, and Rosalie is less than thrilled with the new home she must share with her sharecropper relatives. Rosalie, who is all sass and bold as a lion, brings attitude to the familys small corner of the world. While she tells tales of her antics in the big city, Lilly hangs on to Rosalies every word and soon begins to dream of a better life that does not include picking cotton in the hot sun or sporadically attending school. But as Lillys coming-of-age journey eventually leads her to migrate north to Buffalo with her family, she quickly discovers that with every dream comes a struggle to make it come true. In this historical novel, a young African American woman migrates from Georgia to Buffalo, where she must battle seemingly insurmountable odds to make a better life for herself and her family.

Book The Ladies Repository

Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1858 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Book Pastoral Care and Hermeneutics

Download or read book Pastoral Care and Hermeneutics written by Donald Capps and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic idea of this book derives from Paul Ricoeur's view that since texts and meaningful human actions are sufficiently similar, methods and theories developed for interpreting texts may also be used for interpreting human actions. Donald Capps applies this view to the broad range of pastoral actions and, in the process, formulates a unique and helpful hermeneutical model of pastoral care. Capps maintains that such a model can be extremely useful for understanding what a particular pastoral action means to those involved in it, and for evaluating its effects on these persons.

Each child who is born into a family has an oral and written history, which we should present to our children and not hide it under a bushel. This book is a sequel to Cultural Gumbo, Our Roots, Our Stories and A Diary of Lettie’s Daughter. I have used my family members to tell the stories because I can trace their footsteps through oral and documented tradition and history.
