Book Grandpa s Noises

Download or read book Grandpa s Noises written by Gareth St John Thomas and published by EK Books. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children love laughing about body noises. In Grandpa’s Noises, a range of sounds and words coming from body and mouth are explained in a warm and funny inter-generational romp. Children look at life with open, honest eyes but sometimes it takes a bit of thinking and code-breaking to work out what’s really going on. Fortunately, for this particular grandchild, while Grandpa’s noises might be a mystery to many, he knows just what they mean! For example, "Eyenolessgofurawark" is obviously Grandpa-speak for "I know, let’s go for a walk." "Aaaahhh" means the cup of tea is just perfect, and "Pissphusshawertt" is that sinking sound Grandpa makes when he needs a rest in his chair. And once you know that "Eeeawoscreech!" is actually the sound of a misbehaving hearing aid, Grandpa becomes a lot less scary and even more lovable. Of course some sounds — like the "Fffffffft" that sometimes escapes Grandpa’s bottom (and Dad’s) — need no explanation!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots rock, Americana, alt country: what are they and why do they matter? Americans have been trying to answer these questions for as long as the music bearing these labels has existed. Music can function as an escape from the outside world or as an explanation of that world. Listeners who identify with the music’s message may shape their social understandings accordingly. Rock critics like Greil Marcus and Peter Guralnick, the titans of rock criticism, tap this fluid dichotomy, considering the personal appeal of roots music alongside national ideals of democracy and selfhood. So too do many other critics, novelists, and fans, explaining to themselves and us how music forms our selves and the communities we seek out and build up. In It’s Just the Normal Noises, Timothy Gray examines a wide array of writing about roots music from the 1960s to the 2000s. In addition to chapters on the genre-defining work of Guralnick and Marcus, he explores the influential writings of Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock, the editors of No Depression magazine, and the writers who contributed to its pages, Bill Friskicks-Warren, Ed Ward, David Cantwell, and Allison Stewart among them. A host of memoirists and novelists, from Patti Smith and Ann Powers to Eleanor Henderson and Dana Spiotta, shed light on the social effects and personal attachments of the music’s many manifestations, from punk to alt country to hardcore. The ambivalent attitudes of rock musicians toward success and failure, the meaning of soul, the formation of alternative communities through magazine readership, and the obsession of Generation X scenes with DIY production values wend through these works. Taking a personal approach to the subject matter, Gray reads criticism and listens to music as though rock ‘n’ roll not only explains American culture, but also shores up his life. This book is for everyone who’s heard in roots rock the sound of an individual and a nation singing themselves into being.

Book EBOOK Quality in Early Childhood Services An International Perspective

Download or read book EBOOK Quality in Early Childhood Services An International Perspective written by Helen Penn and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2011-01-16 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how quality and good practice in early childhood education and care (ECEC) is interpreted and implemented in a variety of settings and circumstances. Drawing on her experience of research and policy making in a wide variety of countries, the author considers the variety of rationales that inform services for early childhood education and care. Services are organized, financed and delivered in many different ways across the world. The policies that have been adopted by governments, and the resources which are made available for implementing them, have shaped practice. On the one hand there are complex ideas about what children should be learning and how they should be learning. These ideas about curriculum and the training of teachers and carers may differ radically between countries. On the other hand policies have been prompted by the need to reconcile family and work obligations and to provide childcare to support working mothers, irrespective of educational concerns. The notions of economic competition and parental choice have led to the growth of private for-profit childcare services which promote a particular view of quality and achievement. Above all, growing inequality within countries, and between rich and poor countries, have undermined attempts to provide good quality services. In an unfair world, the impact of any services is likely to be distorted. The book charts the many different approaches to understanding and measuring quality and gives an exceptionally well-informed overview.

"Winging It is kid-friendly and easy to read, yet the text can be enjoyed by all ages. It ought to be read by parents to their children, as children are the future when it comes to protecting birds and their habitats. I especially liked the short personal stories that accompany each chapter. These stories made me want to know more about that particular bird. My hope is that kids reading this book will pass it on to their own kids."-Ron Duffy, Audubon Society bird guide "As an avid birder and educator (5th grade teacher), I recommend this book as a must for any young naturalist. The text takes the reader a step beyond mere bird identification, introducing behavior, folklore, and habitat. Winging It is an excellent text as a field guide, but the book also lends itself to research. The accuracy of the drawings helps a reader to understand bird behavior, as well as providing vivid clues for bird identification."-Janie Chodosh, birder and elementary school teacher.

Book Hurry Walter There Is a Possum in the Hen House

Download or read book Hurry Walter There Is a Possum in the Hen House written by Cricket Webb and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book was created over the years of true stories of what happened to a family that some will say no way could happen. I promise you; there is no way this stuff could ever be made up! One person in the family loved the stories and could always tell them as they happened and pretend to be each person in every occurrence. The family had encouraged this person for years to write the stories into a book so others could laugh as well. It seemed all stories you could buy in this day and time were criminal fast pace stories, sad stories, love stories, murders, trials; well, you get the idea. It was time for a humorous book that was about real people and real stories that were honestly true. You will notice the family has a huge heart for animals and people in need, and sometimes their huge heart for animals could cause them lack of sleep but they never seemed to mind to help with some of God’s chores. They were laboring, working-class people who were as honest as the day is long. They kept their nose in their own business even though they may not understand some of the stuff that was going on with their neighbors. It still was none of their business. What was their business however, was taking care of grandkids, great-grandkids, and all the animals that made up the zoo there on the farm and all the fun stuff that came along with it. They were not ashamed to tell their stories. It happens to everyone; some people want to act like it never happens to them. I promise you at some time in your life, you will step into some dog poop.

Book Saturnin

  • Publisher : Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press
  • Release : 2016-10-01
  • ISBN : 8024632888
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Saturnin written by Jirotka, Zdeněk and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On its initial publication in Czech in 1942, Saturnin was a best-seller. This is entirely appropriate, for while Saturnin draws on a tradition of Czech comedy and authors such as J. Hašek, K. Čapek and K. Poláček, it was also clearly influenced by the English masters Jerome K. Jerome and P. G. Wodehouse. Saturnin is the story of a young man in love and his faithful servant Saturnin, who upsets the peaceful rhythm of his master’s domestic arrangements and turns his life inside out. He lures him into an exotic world where he is forced to live dangerously, and shows him how to cope with any situation. Saturnin lays bare the weaknesses of others and compels them to disclose their ‘true’ nature – he is a subversive servant. Written at a time when Czechoslovakia was deep in the grip of the Nazi occupation, Saturnin showed that one form of resistance was to put the world created by invasion out of your mind and create another. However, so recognisably Czech was that ‘other’ that its popularity did not diminish with the end of the war or, indeed, with the end of the forty years of communism that followed shortly after the war’s end. The book has been adapted for radio and television, produced as a film and has a regular place in the repertoire of the Czech stage. “A delicious dry humour and an imaginative flair that makes it much more than just the ‘Czech Jeeves.’ Owing more to Jerome K. Jerome than to P. G. Wodehouse, the writing is rich in homespun wisdom and casual asides that take on a life of their own, leading the reader up charming byways of irrelevance… A surprising number of belly-laughs for a novel that is more than half a century old.” —Adam Preston, Times Literary Supplement
