Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adriana Trigiani's two remarkable grandmothers, Lucia and Viola, lived through the 20th century from beginning to end as working women who juggled careers and motherhood. From the factory line to the family table, the two of them - the very definition of modern women - cut a path for their granddaughter by demonstrating courage and skill in their fearless approach to life, love and overcoming obstacles. Trigiani visits the past to seek answers to the essential questions that define the challenges women face today: how we hold on to the values that make life rich and beautiful, how we can take risks and reap the rewards, how to stand resilient in the face of tragedy. 'Be bold; 'be direct'; 'be different'!

Book The Shanty Irishman and the Lady

Download or read book The Shanty Irishman and the Lady written by Vennie Anderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrated by a much-loved grandchild, herself now old enough to be a grandmother, the story is about two young people, betrayed by their first loves, who found one another in an unexpected way. Because they’re first cousins, some considered their blossoming love anathema. They didn’t care and spent the rest of their lives unashamedly loving each other. It is also the story of a family, a mother, father, son and daughter who loved and were loved by the two titular lovers. The book brims with love, between mothers and daughters, grandparents and grandchildren, people and pets! There is also humor, the best kind stemming from interesting people in unexpected situations and the adage that truth is stranger than fiction. You may laugh, and you may cry, and when you’ve finished the book, you will know you’ve met real, genuine people, and you’ll probably love them.

Book On the Whispering Wind

Download or read book On the Whispering Wind written by Dan Allison and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fast-paced thriller set on Florida's Gulf Beaches, On the Whispering Wind combines sharply drawn characters, insightful narrative, and a plot with more twists and turns than a two-lane coastal highway. In All the Little Birdies, readers met taxi driver Jake Murdock. Murdock's taken a few wild rides with his sometimes bizarre passengers on Florida's steamy Gulf beaches. When Murdock's former girlfriend--cab driver Cassidy Andrews--finds a corpse in a Treasure Island condominium, and the dead man is the son of a famous televangelist, Murdock finds he's in for another wild and possibly fatal ride, On the Whispering Wind. Blending the madcap zaniness of Tim Dorsey and Carl Hiaasen with the lyrical poignancy of James W. Hall and Randy Wayne White, On the Whispering Wind is evocative Florida noir.

Book excerpt: Where exactly does the South begin and end? Current maps are too rigid to account for the ways Black people have built the South while being simultaneously excluded from it. Drawing from the different ways Black artists in the 2-5-2 area code in North Carolina use "vibe" as a mode of knowing and communication, author Corey J. Miles illustrates how Black feeling and unfeeling offer entry points into the contemporary South that challenge static and monolithic notions of the region. Placing the local artists in conversation with other southern cultural creators such as 2 Chainz, Rod Wave, and Rapsody, these ethnographic narratives demonstrate that there are multiple Souths, with overlapping and distinct commitments to working through pain, sound, and belonging. In Vibe: The Sound and Feeling of Black Life in the American South, Miles narrates how southern Black sound, feeling, and being is constantly policed, surveilled, and criminalized. In doing so, he re-narrates the region as the "carceral South," to capture the ways people in the South and beyond can feel the emotional weight of the criminalization of Blackness. Pain music, a subgenre of trap music, is used to take the listener to moments of violence to allow them to hear the desires, anger, and silences that bind Black life in community. Through conceptions of ratchet, hood, and ghetto, Black artists turn away from respectable images and unmap the South. In trap music, they move the South to a space where multiple modes of being find respect and care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling and richly drawn family drama about a daughter’s quest to understand her mother’s mysterious death. On the morning of her seventieth birthday, Georgianna Grove receives an unexpected letter that calls her back to Missing Lake, Wisconsin, where her mother was murdered sixty-six years earlier. Georgie’s father had confessed to the murder the next morning and was carted off to a state penitentiary. Haunted by the night that took both her parents away and determined to unearth the truth, Georgie takes her reluctant family on what will become a dangerous canoe trip up the swollen Bone River to return to Missing Lake. Acclaimed novelist Susan Richards Shreve, celebrated for her “refined explorations of parent-child relationships” (Washington Post), captures the tenor of the times with clarity and elegance as she follows both Georgie and her parents on parallel trips up the Bone River, weaving together the hope of June 2008 with the injustices of June 1941. Georgie must untangle a web of bigotry, loss, and half-forgotten memories to finally understand her parents’ fate. More News Tomorrow is a stirring and irresistible portrait of a family drawn together in search of truth.
