Download or read book The Glass Tears Poem Journal written by Randal S. Doaty and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ray of sunlight came through a pane in the glass studio workshop. The scrap glass bucket was nearly full. On top of this heap was a hardened drip of glass that had carelessly fallen from a glass artists punti. Glimmering in the sunlight that morning was the very first Glass Teardrop. It may have remained just scrap until the simple words glass tears softly whispered in the imagination of a would-be poet. Two totally different art forms were about to be married. The story of Glass Tears is purely serendipitous. The need for a unique and meaningful sympathy gift happened at just about the same time as the glass teardrop appeared at the studio. The poem, Glass Tears came to Randal S. Doaty as unexpectedly as the teardrop itself. He had never written a poem before, but he felt the need to give his new teardrop a voice. The Glass Tears Poem Journal is a collection of what many different Glass Tears have spoken through the voice of this poet.

Download or read book The Columbia Anthology of Modern Chinese Drama written by Xiaomei Chen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 1216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind in English, this anthology translates twenty-two popular Chinese plays published between 1919 and 2000, accompanied by a critical introduction to the historical, cultural, and aesthetic evolution of twentieth-century Chinese spoken drama. Primarily comprising works from the People's Republic of China, though including representative plays from Hong Kong and Taiwan, this collection not only showcases the revolutionary rethinking of Chinese theater and performance that began in the late Qing dynasty. It also highlights the formation of Chinese national and gender identities during a period of tremendous social and political change, along with the genesis of contemporary attitudes toward the West. Early twentieth-century Chinese drama embodies the uncertainty and anxiety brought on by modernism, socialism, political conflict, and war. After 1949, PRC theater painted a complex portrait of the rise of communism in China, with the ideals of Chinese socialism juxtaposed against the sacrifices made for a new society. The Cultural Revolution promoted a "model theater" cultivated from the achievements of earlier, leftist spoken drama, even though this theater arose from the destruction of old culture. Post-Mao drama addresses the socialist legacy and the attempts of a wounded nation to reexamine its cultural roots. Taiwan's spoken drama synthesizes regional and foreign traditions, and Hong Kong's spoken drama sparkles as a hybrid of Chinese and Western influences. Immensely valuable for cross-disciplinary, comparative, and performance study, this anthology provides essential perspective on China's theatricality and representation of political life.

Download or read book Land of Promise Land of Tears written by Jerry L. Twedt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1869 and Ole and Helena Branjord are Norwegian immigrants attempting to make a new life on forty acres of central Iowa farmland. Ole is a kind, gentle man who questions his ability to provide for his family. Helena is pining for a real house, but has sadly learned through her past experiences that promises, no matter how sincere, are never certain. But Ole has lofty dreams to prove all the naysayers wrong and double his farmstead. The Branjord children each possess talents and challenges. Eleven-year-old Oline loves music. Martin is intelligent beyond his eight years. Four-year-old Berent wants to wear pants instead of the dresses Norwegian custom dictates he don every day. Populating the Branjords world are other immigrants that include a giant, strong man who can make a violin sing; a Civil War veteran with disfiguring physical scars; and members of the local Lutheran church determined to save their congregation. But among all the good is one enemy from Helenas past who wants nothing more than to destroy the Branjords. Twedts well-researched novel deserves to be awarded a place next to Rolvaag's work on the book shelves of home, public, and college libraries. It is apparent that Twedt has devoted many years to perfecting his craft as a storyteller. Brad Steiger

Download or read book A Cry Within written by Joy Agwu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cry Within describes two children who were born of the same parents, a brother and sister who are always in constant disagreement with each other. The boy tends to be very playful and unconcerned, while the girl is very articulate in all her ways. Their parents believed so much in superstition and tradition, and this brings consistent divergent opinions between these parents and their two children. The girl, who is in the center of everything, envisaged the coming of an evil day and succeeded in drawing her brother’s attention to her thoughts and feelings concerning a traditional right that was performed on her behalf when she was two years old. The boy in like manner was so troubled that he vowed that his sister must not marry a man whom she was betrothed to at the age of two, maintaining that his sister has the right of speech and freedom to choose who she wants as a husband. On swearing to stop at nothing to save her sister from being a victim of a tradition, which he considers insignificant, an indirect intimidation and injustice against women and children related his concerns to his friends.
